Through the Booking Glass: Year 1 Week 35

Is it bad that I really wish some of this stuff would show up on the WWE Network? That way I could just link you to the whole show and be like “If you have the network, click here and watch this.” Of course, we’ve had so much turnover in talent since we started this last year that none of the names would match and it would be a fruitless exercise.

Still, unless you have an Xbox 360 as your only means of watching, buy the WWE Network!

As soon as I say that, the stream freezes on my PS3.  Awesome.  Wait a month to buy the WWE Network!

September 1983, Monday, Week 3

Tomorrow’s TV taping will be back to Agricultural Hall in Allentown, PA after taking a week to be in Hamburg.

September 1983, Tuesday, Week 3

The WWF will be using Eddie Gilbert’s recent neck injury to help with a gimmick change.  Gilbert will be portrayed as more of an underdog type character effective with tonight’s taping.  Booker Jared Hawkins apparently feels Gilbert has a creative mind during some of their conversations as Gilbert will get a lot more input into his character than a lot of wrestlers in his position would.

Championship Wrestling taping (September 1983, Tuesday, Week 3)

Back to the Agricultural Hall in Allentown, PA.

In a bout that had a good crowd and good action, Samu and The Wild Samoans defeated Tony Garea, Rocky Johnson and Tony Atlas in 7:11 when Samu pinned Atlas with a Flying Headbutt.

Chief Jay Strongbow defeated Mac Rivera in 3:30 by submission.

Vince McMahon came to ringside to conduct an interview.  Jimmy Snuka, Tito Santana and Rocky Johnson were hyping their upcoming six person tag team match at the Spectrum with Afa, Sika and Samu.

Tiger Conway Jr. pinned Brian Blair in 2:21 with a Piledriver.

Salvatore Bellomo pinned Bob Bradley in 4:02 by pinfall with a Pizza Splash.

In an extremely short match, Masked Superstar defeated S.D. Jones in 1:01 by pinfall.

Buddy Rogers’ Corner is next.  He interviewed Eddie Gilbert, who admitted he had been having issues with his neck over the past few months but he is feeling better than ever.  He thanked Bob Backlund for supporting him while he worked on healing and strengthening his neck.

Eddie Gilbert pinned Israel Matia in 1:43 with a Hot Shot.

Mr. Fuji & Tiger Chung Lee defeated Ivan Putski & Tito Santana in 2:55 when Lee pinned Putski with a Kiwi Roll.

Bob Backlund was interviewed backstage by Vince McMahon, and he hyped his upcoming title defense next weekend in Philadelphia against Sgt. Slaughter.

Rene Goulet pinned Swede Hanson in 3:26.

The show started off good but got steadily worse as it went along.

September 1983, Wednesday, Week 3

The show in Allentown last night drew the usual sellout of 1,300.

September 1983, Thursday, Week 3

Billy Red Lyons has asked to be moved out of the ring and into an announcing capacity.  He will likely do interviews at some of the major shows.

September 1983, Friday, Week 3

I am hearing there at least discussions of Bill Anderson and Don Kernodle getting a bigger push over the next few months. I’d like to see Kernodle paired up with Sgt. Slaughter again but I’m not sure where Anderson would fit into anybody’s plans.

September 1983, Saturday, Week 3

Some members of the creative team are hoping for an increased role for Barry Hart.  Hart has been at the bottom of the card just about everywhere he has been, so some people are worried he’s been typecast in the role.

September 1983, Sunday, Week 3

For the first time in nearly four months, TV ratings for WWF Championship Wrestling fell this weekend.  Not a good sign.

Jared Hawkins is an indy wrestling referee and a former recapper of WWE Raw and SmackDown for the now-defunct www.thesmartmarks.com and co-hosts Pro Wrestling Weekend, available through smartmarkradio.com every Sunday at 6pm Eastern. When not doing something wrestling-related, he is generally getting higher doses of his anxiety medication due to the aggravation of his Cleveland sports teams.
