Wow, how is it that I'm the one defending Cardona to modern ROH?

Is he anywhere near the level of talent that made ROH into a must-see promotion from 2002 to 2010? Is he even near the level of talents that populated the ROH main event from 2010-2014? Hell no.

Is he one of the most popular talents not currently involved with WWE, AEW, or NJPW? Is he a veteran that could share lnowledge on how to get yourself over regardless of your push? Hell yes.
They have had and continued to employ multiple dozens of people who fit that criteria and if the people who need that knowledge imparted to them haven’t figured it out by now, they sure as god damn aren’t learning from a solid hand turned meme worker.

If ROH was actually used for development and not for corpse puppetry, I'd get the argument

He's an idiot for not using it as a development territory and just housing talent he won't fire. Like let someone else book it, and book whoever they want. Don't hire anyone over 30 unless they're able to contribute in no less than three ways.

Just watched it based on that recommendation, and I totally agree. Holy shit. It's crazy, that Ospreay/Darby was imo not brought up that much as a dream match. The two craziest guys in the promotion and they put on a match worthy of it. Darby is already at that Foley/Jeff Hardy level, (Hell, maybe further at least on the insanity level) and hopefully he will win the big one eventually.

I haven't seen it in full yet but that's the kind of match AEW was about for me in a lot of ways. Like the dream match that you didn't think about with two pretty different workers, from background to style to presentation, just stealing the show. Looking forward to the full thing when I get home.

I don't know if I felt like I was set up by unrealistic expectations or what, but I thought that the match was... good? I can't co-sign "best match in the history of the promotion" good, I feel like I've seen 3-4 Danielson matches in AEW that were better than that, and I think one of those also involved Ospreay.

There were a ton of wicked spots, for sure, and that missed Coffin Drop to the edge of the ring was ridiculous but, based on the way y'all and others were talking about it, I felt like the match kind of overpromised and underdelivered?

Holy shit, that was a DAMN GOOD match. I bought every near fall and knew that there was still time left on the video.

A major takeaway from this has to be the importance of selling. Darby sold almost every shot from Ospreay like it was from a shotgun, as he usually does, and Ospreay wisely played the "big man" instead of trying to go flip for flip.

Helluva match. ****, for me.

Darby, Ospreay, Page, Jay White are the four guys I want as the next AEW champs in some order. I'd also be fine with Swerve again. if Okada ever gets used better or decides he wants to kick it back up into gear we could talk too. There's a lower tier of guys who might be there at some point and a bunch of really good secondary title guys. AEW's roster is so deep still, they just need to be used right.

Jay White hasn't been used right since he was signed. I wasn't huge on him in NJPW (because only SHINGO matters to me there), but he had loads of natural in-ring charisma and an amazing look. Not properly utilizing him is another Tony failure.

I really don't know if I want Hangman as someone to build around. Like he's great at being everything but the main guy, and that's fine. He's at his peak now.

White should've beaten MJF in hindsight. That feud and all the Acclaimed shit killed him for a long time.

Darby is the guy but his win should mean something. He's Sting now. Ideally you build the Mox match up for a long time but if Mox isn't working you might need to audible.

Will should be the guy. I just don't like him as a face very much.

Ospreay works as a face when he's reminded how to sell. He's so sympathetic when fighting from underneath, and has that "dumb kid down the block" charm to him. If he's heel then he needs to just be a dumb prick, but if he's face then he still needs to be dumb. He's dumb, you see.

Jay White is their sleazebag that always finds ways to screw people over. Give him some legitimate direction and let him cook.

Hangman...meh. I'm with Val. You don't build a company around him, but you feature him as a constant secondary character who gets the focus now and then.

Darby is maybe the only person on the roster who could lose 90% of the time and still be super over. That's special. Don't have him come down and clean house on the Death Riders, but have him be the one to join the pier six and get one over on them.

There's so much that AEW could work with and do better with, but Tony is in the fucking way.

I just don't like rooting for Ospreay as a face. He's so naturally scummy that it's way more fun rooting for him as a heel. Him as a face is like if Billy Zabka was the protagonist in an 80s movie. But I do think he is probably a better worker as a face.

White's still stunted by the MJF shit for me. He's almost back, though, and some big matches with more of the top guys will get it all back. I could probably make a case for him being the guy to beat Mox if I wanted, honestly, but for real let him and Christian just run the upper card.

Hangman's interesting because he's in the same mold as Jake Roberts where he is not meant to be the focal point but is an integral piece. Like his whole role should be disrupting everyone in psychotic ways, and he's found such a groove now that I don't even want to tempt the cowboy shit back.

Darby is what I always wish Jeff Hardy was, honestly. Like, remember how people lost their fucking minds for Hardy in the ladder match with Taker? Darby feels like he has that energy weekly. He's become a super special guy and is the heart of the company, representing the best things about AEW, and became one of the best workers in the company. His moment needs to be the biggest since Sting's retirement just for the good of the company.

Pairing him with Sting was a brilliant move and gave him legitimacy to casual viewers. I didn't get it immediately, but once I got how much Darby puts into every match. It's hard to not love him as a wrestler. Not person.

Nigel returned to ROH at Final Battle tonight.

Say what you will about their week to week programming but AEW almost always delivers on PPV.

It's incredibly concerning to do weeks of video packages for someone's return only for them to be returning to face Jericho. Fuck's sake.

The Bandido thing is fucking baffling and a total buzzkill. It was great seeing Nigel back (I turned the show on just to watch that.) It seems like the show over-delivered considering how lackluster the card was.

I'm hearing a lot of good things about Brody/Kommander from Rampage so I need to check that out later.

And the guy apparently hurt himself in the process. What a mess.

A lot of people seem to be bothered they put Athena over Billie and continued her 2 year plus reign. Billie would gotten a great pop and has potential but if you are trying to sell this fiasco to a tv/streaming platform, you need someone like Athena.

I couldn't care less who holds any of the titles in ROH yeah. If I was going to get annoyed about anything it would be Nigel not winning and that doesn't matter because I doubt he's able/willing to wrestle more often and if he was I wouldn't want him wasting time in ROH doing Pure title garbage.

If you say so. From a booking perspective, it feels like if Roman had beaten Cody again in the rematch. Unless the plan is either (a) have her pull an Asuka and get "called up" to AEW without ever losing the belt, or (b) have her lay down for Mercedes at Wrestle Dynasty, I don't get where Athena is supposed to go from here.

I'm with Slim on this one, I think it was an absolutely terrible decision. Tony is way too receptive to other people giving him bad ideas. At no point should he ever have listened to someone tell him to stick Athena on ROH only for two whole years. I don't care if it was Athena's idea or anyone else's. No.

More Harley Cameron pls.

Watching Mark Davis on Rampage last night, his look and how he moves, I couldn't help but think he should try to develop some sort of Aussie Stan Hansen gimmick.

AEW has filed trademarks on the following titles “Maximum Combat”, “Maximum Mayhem” and “Maximum Carnage”, the latter already being used for promotion for the upcoming double taping in Cincinnati.
