I mean, the overpushed comments were very, very true at different periods of time...and, if we're being honest, the Cruiserweights did influence the industry more long-term...

All of those statements are correct to an extent except the NWO being bullshit (at least pre 1998) and DDP being overpushed.

There were definitely times, even during points in their career that I look back now as their peaks, where I thought "Ugh. That's a little too much of Triple H/The Rock/Goldberg." Even during the downward slope of WCW from '98 to '01, I never recall thinking "Ugh, man. Fuck I'm SICK of god damn Diamond Dallas Page!" I feel like he was one of more properly pushed guys ever (very solid upper mid-carder that occasionally main events B PPVs).

The nwo stuff to this day permeates the industry. We still have guys cosplaying as them in multiple companies and beyond that the cool heel schtick that they and DX were all about is dominant.

The Hardy Boyz line should be called out for being particularly dumb. Send them to a company that doesn't pay their workers and put Jeff around the worst drug addicts in the business? Great Idea.

I was around the net back then and don't remember a lot people saying the Hardys should go to ECW.

And of course the token shot at Meltzer...

I don’t think anyone had any strong opinion about the Hardys prior to 1998/99ish and by then ECW had really started to lose its shine with the IWC.

I actually think they WOULD’VE been good if they went to ECW (and not just trying to get @Laz ’e approval with that statement!) but no way would Jeff Hardy have lived to be a WWE Champion if that had happened.

Yeah well imagine if a guy had said that WWE should fire Stone Cold and make Essa Rios the world champion. Or if someone wanted Lizmark Jr. to end Goldberg's streak. There are some guys that would need to be called out and held accountable. Fuck those guys! I can do this all day.

all of those takes are rightfully dumb except the one about HHH.

You have to take them in context; they're not talking about Goldberg being pushed in 2021, they're talking about some fans feeling that way in 1998 which LOL

SMW was probably a better wrestling show than WWF or WCW at several points in its existence, but it ended years before the Attitude Era started. This guy isn't even aware of the reality that the "IWC" during the Attitude Era was 80% WWF sycophants who bashed everything WCW did and 20% puro dorks.

Hardys had a cult following pre No Mercy 99. I know the DVDMB crew loved their Omega Wrestling stuff against Helms, Mike Maverick, and Cham Pain and the guys. Hardys along with guys like Christopher Daniels, Scoot Andrews, and Michael Modest were the indie darlings of the late 90's and I could of seen them get a shot in ECW in an alternate world. But they weren't in any way under pushed in 99-01 or so and Jeff was gonna crash and burn either way by the early 00's.

And yeah this thing is stupid when most of the hardcores didn't give a fuck about SMW in 1998 and were talking more about All Japan.

I don't remember people ever complaining about DDP's push even in my brief forays into AOL chat rooms and message boards in the late 90s.

I will admit DDP didn't have the best rep for a long time. After Useless Moron Scott Keith (who sent me a free book one time because I told him I was an online reviewer for this site) told everyone about DDP's meticulous planning style, he lost a lot of respect online from what I can tell. But a lot of great songwriters plan out their studio session for weeks, nbd to me.

And Meltzer had plenty of critics online in the late 90s. Obviously not as much as now but they existed. Sean Shannon hated him.

Just remembered that Sean once accused Dave of making up phony buyrate numbers to make wcw look good and wwf look bad. I sorta miss those days...

Yeah, people getting uptight about DDP's planning style before matches always annoyed me. He just had a different style to approaching spots than everyone else. Doesn't make him less of a worker. I think his close relationship with Bischoff probably caught the ire of the late 90s smarks.

I don't remember that but I do remember Sean saying that "just because more people watch WCW than WWF doesn't mean more people like it." And that Taz was better than Bret Hart because "he knows just as many moves as Bret and has the best suplexes in the business." And that Bret was the worst human being in the history of the business, worse than Jose Gonzales because the murder was just a one-time thing and Bret had consistently tried to put the WWF out of business. OK, she really had it out for Bret.

I remembered it because Sean questioned the numbers when dissecting a Herb Kunze Update and Herb got all his info from Dave.

Does anyone remember "wrestling bibtits" parody site Sean created to mock Herb Kunze? I'm saddening myself remembering all this stuff

Bingo. I remember going on smaller boards when I got online in late 1999, and the general consensus on DDP was "solid guy but doesn't deserve the ME but gets it because he's buddies with Bischoff." That was a prevailing opinion on the Bolt.com boards and chats, and I remember it still existed on the original Smarks board in 2002.

did anyone other than Sean think Taz was better than Bret? that might be worse than anything in the original post.
In 1999? Fuck yes. All of that was proper booking, of course, but comparing both of their 1999s head to head and not thinking Taz had the better year? That should be the real bad take.

Has anyone ever discussed DDP planning out his matched besides Keith? I've heard lots of wrestlers push back on that idea with Savage but never Page.

Ric Flair slammed DDP in his book for planning out his matches instead of calling it in the ring, which only added to the anti-Page fervor that was prevalent on earlier incarnations of this board for a long time.

I remember posting about DDP years ago and wondering why it even mattered to any of us whether he called it in the ring or not.
