My boss didn't show up today which I thought was weird and she just phoned me saying that HR thinks that she's a viral threat to the office (she's a type 1 diabetic) and that she's been told to work from home for the next week and a half.

I've never experienced anything like this in my life.

People are already dying in custody at the border, it's going to be horrific if this spreads amongst migrants

Italian hospitals are at 200% capacity and doctors are having to pick and choose who to treat. This is going to be the USA sooner than later

Just did an interview with a company in Sarasota for an internship this summer. They said the company's will likely be fully remote by the time we get there.

Massachusetts already canceled the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Boston (pretty big deal) and now Baker's declared a State of Emergency.

https://www.nbcboston.com/news/local/gov-baker-to-speak-on-states-coronavirus-preparedness/2088681/

"Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker declared a state of emergency Tuesday as the number of coronavirus cases in the state spiked to 92, more than double the 41 cases announced just 24 hours earlier.

'Today, I'm declaring a state of emergency in Massachusetts. This declaration will give our administration more flexibility to respond to this evolving outbreak,' he said."

State of emergency in North Carolina. Government workers (myself included) are encouraged to work from home as much as possible for the immediate future. It's been fun, bros.

The NC SOE sure seems like a complete sham based on the press conference. Literally zero extra restrictions or regulations were applied with the SOE, just "Hey be careful out there, y'all!"

Also, did I hear them correctly, are there really only 300 tests right now for the entire state?

Edit: 1500 more test kits expected next week

Trump says the border wall would help keep the coronavirus out. Head of CDC is like, “Umm, no.”

Also, Italy is now announcing about a 15% mortality rate every day, so we all better hope that China was telling the truth when they gave their numbers or the world is about to be completely assfucked beyond all recognition. Like basically every old person will die.

Italy is also only three weeks into this crisis...

I think the rest of the world took the wrong lessons from how China handled this and probably should have dealt with it in similar fashion. Society already should have been shut down, but considering how everyone initially treated this like it was a joke, that probably wouldn't have went over too well. There will be unprecedented outrage when the general public finds out that we all will carry the virus and have been killing the old folks that we know.

This is one of the most important events of our lifetime and there are idiots in power almost everywhere in the world.

I doubt very strongly that she will even be allowed to travel here. In 10-14 days we will be locked down like Italy.

Part of Italy's mortality rate is that they were caught with their pants down (much like us) and that they test everyone who dies from the virus. There are thousands out there who hadn't been tested and it drove the mortality rate up. As compared to South Korea who have handled this about as well as anyone could, with mass testing that shows a mortality rate at less than 1%. Unfortunately, we are trending more towards Italy than South Korea at this point, mostly because half of the country blindly follows the moron they voted into the office and basically hand wave this away as a simple flu.

I believe the biggest thing working in the U.S.'s favor at this point is that, although we are densely populated, we are very vast, which may slow the spread of the disease. China is also large and densely populated but they have nearly four times as many people per square mile while their hygiene habits (live animal markets, cultural shit like spitting indoors being acceptable) are behind even our slovenly ways. It isn't fool proof but it is at least something in our favor.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/health/2020/03/11/coronavirus-live-updates-washington-ban-michigan-cases-us-death/5011587002/

"Washington Gov. Jay Inslee was expected to announce a ban Wednesday on gatherings and events of more than 250 people in the Seattle metropolitan area as the state attempts to slow the spread of the virus that has killed 23 people there.

The vast majority, 70, are tied to a conference the biotech company Biogen held in Boston last month. Four are travel-related and 18 are under investigation.

Cuomo announced a plan Tuesday to enforce a "containment area" of a 1-mile radius around the Young Israel synagogue at the center of the cluster, which includes part of the city of New Rochelle and stretches into the town of Eastchester, both of which are about 20 miles north of New York City in Westchester County.

Any large gathering places within that containment area will be required to shut down through March 25, Cuomo said. Westchester remains at the epicenter of New York state’s coronavirus outbreak with more than 100 confirmed cases."

This is true. It's a big country. It's also a big dumb country, which is what worries me. I feel like common sense should always be in order, but this is the time for an extra dose of it. I've been very careful for several weeks now while not being crazy, but I prepared to drop out of society for a few weeks and the lever has been pulled. There's enough suspected and/or confirmed cases close enough to tell me it's time

This is when I realize yet again I should have a Children of Men style home in the forest. one of these days....maybe I'll get rich as a breeder

I am scheduled to attend the "Midwest Gaming Classic" in 3 weeks. The show runners said today they are seeking doctors out for advice on advancing with the show or not. 10,000 geeks running around a closed area and sharing controllers can only be a good thing!

UMass announced they're holding all of their classes virtually for the rest of the year on all of their campuses.

Our hotel hosts the Mass Maritime school students/teachers every week on Friday and they probably make up 70-80% of the arrivals that day. I'm just waiting for them to officially stop/shut down and do something similar.

One other factor not being reported is that all these colleges are also shutting down the dorms. A lot of these students need $$ to find a new place to stay at with WiFi, live out of state and need to go back (if their state isn't a coronavirus hotbed), or live globally and feasibly cannot go back.

Harvard gave everyone five days to get out. That's moronic and the exact type of dumb decision making that not needed.

Edit: UMass is not going remote for the rest of the semester, they are extending spring break (which it currently is) a week and the following week will be 100% online until April 3. All my classes are online so I'm not affected but I probably won't have many tutoring appointments the next few weeks.

I'm in a Slack with a bunch of professors at different colleges and they're all expecting to finish out the semester online and are just waiting on the administrations to make announcements soon. My school is still holding out on making any announcements. We're on spring break right now and we officially start back on Monday, but we'll see.
