He may be divisive in Canada, but over here, anyone who like Drake is probably a girl or a fag. You can't walk around listening to Drake and not expect to get what the fuck looks. That street cred stuff in the Drake thread kinda holds weight. If you don't live a decadent lifestyle or have gone through some shit, you better be a crazy ass lyricist, funny, witty, or have an amazing personality. Drake has none of those and his music, at least the 20 songs they play on Hot 97, is really an insult to anyone's intelligence. Girls quote Drake like he's Alexander Pope. He deserves no praise.

Is pitchfork supposed to matter?

They DO matter, to a degree. They've probably got the biggest name as far as credible music review goes. I couldn't say that for sure but I can't think of any other publication off the top of my head. That's not to say that I love them or anything, I disagree with them about plenty of things but they've got credibility for sure. The point is that there are clearly a lot of people that think he's a good rapper and they're people with generally respected tastes. I don't know what you mean by 'real people', the people writing these reviews are real irl. They can also explain why they feel the way they do without cheaply stating that you'd get wtf looks for listening to it (because that's really damning) and that it's music for 'fags and girls' (I've never seen that genre on iTunes, guess I'm not looking hard enough). It's clear that because he's not fitting into a box that you've created for rap to go into that you don't like him, rather than judging him on his own terms.

Also The Source is pretty different in terms of writing style, personnel and readership than Pitchfork, and they praised him too.

Here's a better exercise since I'm not going to agree with the idea that because a magazine and a hipster music review website think he might be good I should consider it too, maybe you should just tell me what you might like abo..oh! wait a sec:

I haven't heard much of his stuff

Why are you defending someone you haven't heard? Is it because a lot of people like him and you're deferring to Pitchfork and The Source? Because if that's the case, that's waaaaaaay worse than getting on me for not accepting him into my prototype crew of rappers.

I'll tell you what I don't like about him: He seems phony. I don't know if he's phony as a person, but his music seems phony. I don't get a genuine feel. He has a nursery rhyme flow. He killed similes and metaphors. Ted Bundy. And he doesn't rap about anything that interests me. His songs are dull, predictable, and offer no insight. He's not a good storyteller, and he doesn't paint images in my mind. He's lazy. And he caters to teenage girls. I'm not a teenage girl.

Brooklyn Zoo, you have terrible taste in music, and your gay panic does not reflect well on you as a person.

I don't have gay panic and didn't mean to offend with the word fag. What I meant was people who like music catered to girls. That's Drake's bread and butter.

If you think I have terrible taste in music, that's fine. I don't listen to too much outside of rap.

That wasn't at all what I was saying, I never commented on the quality of his music. I said that he was divisive because I pointed out that there are many people that like him a lot, like the aforementioned websites and many other music reviewers I don't feel like pointing out, not to mention tons of people who have bought his CD (many of whom are not women or homosexuals, who for some reason carry less credibility when it comes to taste in music according to you). Meanwhile, there are obviously plenty of people that don't like him. I never said that because they like him that you should like him too. You've somehow forgotten that you initially said that he wasn't divisive and that is what I was pointing out (conveniently quoted in the last post of the thread before you made yours).

As for the second thing you said, quickly perusing the thread will show that I took issue with a few of the things in the Pitchfork review, so no I'm not at all piggybacking their opinion. Don't act like you can't search out the post where I said it since you looked long enough to find one quote and use it out of context (also irrelevant because I've listened to plenty of Take Care since that post was made) Sorry boss, you whiffed on everything here.

Take the homosexuals out of it. I didn't mean anything by it, and I didn't even mean homosexual. But yeah, I don't think as a majority, the girls that buy these albums, their opinions do not matter when judging Drake. What they consider good rap music is not really good rap music, as a majority. Here's my point. I don't like Jay-Z. Never have, really. But I know he's a good rapper, and he has a lot of skill and he's one of the best ever. If you're in line with the thought that guys like Jay-Z, Nas, Biggie, 2Pac, Eminem, Andre 3000, Rakim, etc. are the greatest artists of all-time, using that criteria, there is no way in hell you think Drake is good. That's not saying that anyone who isn't as good as those guys mentioned aren't skilled themselves, just that Drake shows none of the attributes that made those guys great. So with that in mind, I don't know who you say has like authority to put Drake on a pedestal or whatnot, but I don't buy it all. I don't think he's as divisive as you think he is. I'd like to see who legit considers him a good rapper and what they say to back that up.

My facebook feed:

Watching Drake on Chelsea Lately.. I think I love him ♥

I think I hate him for real now

I don't think I agree with that assessment. To varying degrees of success admittedly, both of his albums have had real attempts to craft somethinga artistically unique.

I liked his last album a lot. The new one is good, too, but way too long. I don't have the patience to listen to it as often.

Wait. No.

Clearly, a white guy who wears things like a Marvin the Martian hoodie "gets rap music."

There are many people on this forum who can read. You are not one of them.

Do you not realize that you are considered the least intelligent poster here by a wide margin? Most of us would prefer not to be taken seriously by the likes of you.

You can think what you want and you don't speak for everyone. Just know that I am not unintelligent.

I actually didn't mind his last album, partly because I liked the novelty of a singer/rapper (I don't count the Ja Rule crooning stuff, mind you). Not that he's the greatest singer, but he can hold a decent tune. Now, I'm starting to grow weary Drake and the whole YMCMB style of rapping in general.

The only Drake songs I know are "I'm on One," "What's My Name," and "Headlines," and the first two aren't really his songs anyway. The guy is okay. I cannot conceive of ever having a spirited argument about him, though, and I've fought more than my share of stupid battles over rap and rappers.
