I swore we had a thread for MK already but I can't find it. The new game came out yesterday and is getting really good reviews so far. I picked it up and played a couple of hours. I'm a very casual fighting gamer so me enjoying the combat doesn't mean much, but I found it easy to pick up and fast paced.

As to everything else, if you're a fan of the Mortal Kombat universe then this game is awesome. I haven't even touched story mode yet and I hear that's the best part. The characters look great, all the ones I give a shit about are there, and the fatalities I've seen so far were well done. The Krypt is back with a fuckton of god knows what to unlock, though I'm saving my coins until someone puts out a list of what tombs contain what, as I'm assuming there are empty ones again.

The game has a very big Mortal Kombat 2 vibe to it, and it's awesome to see all of the stages from MK2 with modern graphics. And of course TOASTY!!!

In addition to story and arcade ladder there's also a challenge tower with lord knows how many challenges to complete. I did about 30 last night and am sure there's a ton more. When I hit the test your luck one I ended up fighting Raiden in 'armless combat'. That's so fucked up, and yet it was awesome. Especially when you try and do moves that require arms. As for the arcade mode I played through one on easy and once on very easy, lord knows if I'll ever be good enough to even complete it on medium. On very easy I fought Goro, and on easy I fought Kintaro. I don't know if it's difficulty related or just random. But man the fight with Kintaro was fucking epic. Shao Khan is also a badass, and has fatalities. Plus after he beats you a slave girl crawls up to him and hugs his leg. What a pimp.

Not regretting dropping the full price on this at all. My only complaint thus far is they've joined the online pass band wagon. I don't play online, and I bought it new so I got the pass, but it still annoys me and I don't like supporting games that do it. Oh well, it was worth it because Scorpion hates teddies!

I haven't played the new one but my favorite game of the series was number two, so that's good. I kind of hoping they would go back to digitized graphics in one of the future games. Having real actors fighting was revolutionary at that time.

There has NEVER been a controller more poorly designed for a fighting game than the 360 controller. It is so fucking frustrating.

That being said I've encountered some shit in the story mode that's pissing me off. There's constant 2 vs 1s. At least 1 per chapter and they're far and away more difficult than the "boss" fights so far (though I've only made it to the beginning of MKII). Goro is the worst so far though. He goes invincible and uninterpretable during some of his attacks so he'll come across the screen spinning at you and you can't just leg sweep him out of it and he'll hit you 3 times for 1/4 life.

Did have one good moment though. I was just demoing the fatalities in the practice mode and I just happened to do one of Shang Tsung's where he turns into a clown just as my terrified of clown's girlfriend looked at the tv. Screaming followed by much laughter ensued.

Forgot to mention that while playing through Arcade mode last night after winning a match Noob Saibot appeared to fight me. And he utterly destroyed me, it wasn't even funny. But I like that they've gone back to having hidden battles that occur if you fulfill some set of conditions (and I have no idea what condition I fulfilled.)

lol I assure you as soon as you play through the MK2 and MK3 parts you will change your mind about the 2 vs 1's being the most difficult.

Any cheat codes for 1-button fatalities yet?

No, and from what I've seen, there hasn't been yet. Probably won't be. Though that would be nice.

From what I've seen and heard, it sounds like good ol' MK. So I might find some way to get my hands on this.

I'm starting to think the developers all have this burning desire to be teleporting ninjas. There's at least a half dozen in the game.

Doing the story mode atm, there seems to be certain fights where you earn alot more koins than others. Wondering if those fights are optional to win, and if you lose the story goes a little differently. Like
Jax vs Sheeva, curious if you lose does she rip his arms off.

For those that haven't played it yet...Tower Challenge 269?

SPAM AWAY ON THIS.

You play Stryker...against THREE Shao Kahns. Just spam the hell out of the gun, using the "enhanced" version as well when possible.

I'm already struggling at like challenge 40 or so. Sounds like it's going to take me years to complete that fucker.

I'm going to be picking this up tomorrow. MK2 was always one of my favorite fighters, and I loved the demo. I'll get killed once I play online, but I'm not too worried about online play at the beginning.

And just to keep on topic, I'm at I think chapter 10 of story mode. I'm really digging it so far and I like how it's just acting acting fight acting fight acting acting fight with no world map or any other nonsense. I actually did kind of like the story mode from one of the PS2 era games...Deception? But this is much better. I also was glad to see that
it's not actual time travel nonsense like I had heard, and instead is just one dude getting a vision from his future self, and trying to decipher it and act accordingly, so that the timeline is changed, but not all that much (as far as I've gotten).

Well, after hours of work and pain in the thumb, I did it.

I beat the Kombat Tower WITHOUT skipping over any of the levels.

It was tricky, but not impossible. Some were harder. Like the one where your D-Pad controls were reversed...or another one that I remember the number for: #269.

But as for #300...

You have to fight Goro, Kintaro, Mileena (guess they didn't feel like putting Motaro in) and Shao Kahn in succession. Unlike event #269 (Stryker vs. 3 Shao Kahns) you DO recover a bit between rounds.

The way I beat it was playing Smoke and just spamming the hell out of his teleport punching attack thing...using the enhanced form when necessary.

For beating it, you get the outfit Mileena wears in it...which is the very definition of "wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen". You also get an achievement that says "Best...Alternate...EVER!"

I finally beat story mode this afternoon after much swearing and frustration. They of course leave it open to a sequel, which will be difficult
since everyone except Raiden, Cage and Sonya are dead

I started the Kombat Tower and I hope you get more coins higher up because 25 challenges got me less than 5000 coins.

Beat it this morning myself. Liked the ending, except for what you mentioned, and the sequel baiting shit. I hate that, especially this kind where
A character not seen in the entire game shows up and is all YES IT'S ALL GOING TO PLAN BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA
like the console Baldur's Gate games did.

This game's more fun than I thought it would be. I really enjoyed the story mode. I'm about 100 challenges into the ladder and enjoying that too, although I can tell I'm going to get really frustrated by the later ones. Pathetically enough, the ones I've had the most trouble with so far are the ones where the zombies attack you and you just have to stand there and press one button over and over again.

PSN really needs to come back up so I can play people online, ugh.

Only thing I hate is still after all these years we can't play as Goro, here's hoping we get him as DLC

Obviously there was going to be a sequel given how much work went into this game and the whole rebooting of the franchise. What other way are they supposed to build to the next game? I don't mind the setup at all.

Outstanding game, anyway. Best story mode for a fighter, IMO. Wish there was a 1p versus mode though. Instead of having to go through the arcade, it'd be nice to just pick my own opponent for a single match.

Hope Rain gets the dlc treatment, too.
