General Horror Films & TV Discussion Thread

If you're looking for a neat hidden anthology show, The Hunger Season 2 is free on Prime (it was a Showtime series starting around 1997 through 2000) with its 2nd season being hosted by David Bowie and exec produced by Ridley Scott. Some of the guest stars include Giovanni Ribisi, Eric Roberts, Jennifer Beals, Glenn Plummer, Brad Dourif, Richard Robitaille, Polly Shannon, Anthony Michael Hall, Kim Huffman, William McNamara, Maria Bertrand, and Fisher Stevens.

Few things coming to Blu

-Criterion is giving Ken Russel's Altered States a 4K and Blu treatment. Awesome movie BTW

-Lionsgate Limited is releasing 4K Steelbook editions of High Tension and It Follows.

-Arrow is giving Creepshow 2 the 4K treatment.

-Blue Underground is releasing Death Line on 4K and Blu. Underrated movie.

-Sony is releasing Tom Savini's Night of the Living Dead on 4K, which will contain the directors cut.

I think I'm off the Robert Eggers train at this point since he's reteaming with my two least favorite parts of Nosferatu (Lily Rose Depp and Aaron Taylor Johnson) for a Werewolf movie called Werwulf. The more I've sat with Nosferatu, the less I like it. It was kind of an empty movie that looked beautiful, but meant nothing. All the performances besides Dafoe or Emma Corrin weren't very good, and even Bill Skarsgaard and Nicolas Hoult came off silly on the rewatch. The Herzog version and even the 1922 version crush it imo and stick with me more.

And, honestly The Northman hasn't really stayed with me beyond the one time I've watched it. Good viking movie, but that's about it. At least I still have The Witch and The Lighthouse to rewatch.

Not sure if it's been discussed here, but there is a new Dracula that just looks like a remake/rehash of Coppola's version. It looks great from a cinematography perspective, but I'm not sure how essential it is:

Definitely agree moreso on The Northman. I wasn't super big on it and it's gone down on each re-watch. I also have to think The Witch wouldn't be 3/4ths as good if it weren't for Anya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Ineson and what they bought to the table as actors.

It's funny how many movies were so hyped and beloved a few years back that I couldn't stand are now being re-evaluated as kinda lame.

Outside of some awesome gore (love them exploding bodies), I found "Until Dawn" to be the definition of "meh"

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 Trailer

I know I'm not the intended audience, but this is one of those things like "Minecraft" and "Fortnite" that makes me feel like the "old man yells at cloud" meme.

Arrow is releasing the following in October

-In the Mouth of Madness UHD
-Trick r Treat 4K Steelbook
-Three...Extremes Blu
-Ms 45 UHD and Blu
-Spawn UHD and Blu (because...I guess?)
-Return of the Living Dead UHD and Blu (UK only)
-The Sadness UHD (UK only)

This looks like a blast actually. Corey from Halloween Ends is a perfect choice for Billy and he looks to be pretty intimidating. I know they remade it a decade ago with Malcolm McDowell, but this looks more in the spirit of the original.

Shout Factory announced the following for October

-Black Sunday UHD/Blu combo
-End of Days UHD/Blu combo
-Herzog's "Nosferatu" UHD/Blu combo
-A Chinese Ghost Story trilogy
-"Child's Play", Halloween III" and "Hush" UHD (steelbook)

Totally in for "Black Sunday", which is my favorite Gothic Horror film next to "Bride of Frankenstein". "Chinese Ghost Story" looks cool. "End of Days"...admittedly not my favorite Arnold movie, but "Hey, easy on the hardware" is one of his more underrated one liners. Also one of the most "Nu Metal" horror movies of all time, what with the soundtrack and Satan having a threesome while Limp Bizkit plays in the background.

End Of Days does have one of the best lines that ended up on the old Arnold soundboards from the 00's

The last time I watched it, I noticed more camp, and didn't hate it as much as I used too. Arnold blending all of his food and a Kevin Pollack stuntman getting lit on fire is comedy gold. Gabriel Byrne is legit good too, as is Robin Tunney. It's just so long and self serious. Soundtrack is a guilty pleasure though.

I'm irrationally hyped for this movie. I don't care about Football, but Marlon Wayans is an actor that I think can be really good when he gets out of his comfort zone of wacky character based comedy. The only thing though, was when he yelled in the trailer, I immediately thought of his Loc-Dog character from Don't Be A Menace and couldn't stop laughing. I can't really figure out what tone they are going for, but I'm very interested.

I will say both Shawn and Marlon are my least favorite part of the first two Scary Movie films. Marlon's voice he does and laugh as Shorty just grates on me. And, the barrage of gay jokes from Ray just gets exhausting. I only found two of them funny and every line from Ray is a gay joke.

Marlon has that Requiem For A Dream performance, while Shawn was uh the DJ on In Living Color that barely was in the skits.

I honestly don't think I've seen anything with Damon Wayans Jr in it. Never watched Happy Endings or New Girl or the comedy classic Let's Be Cops.

A few things coming to 4K and Blu

-The NOES series is getting a 4K collection release on September 30th.

-"Re-Animator" is getting a 4K release on November 11th.

-No dates, but Synapse is releasing "Frankenhooker" and "Prom Night" 1-4 on 4K. I will say "Prom Night II" is an example of a sequel that's a lot more fun than the previous movie. Bit of trivia about the third one-it was produced by none other than the father of Lyle and Eric Menendez, whose murder apparently happened around the time of it's release.

-Richard Stanley's "Dust Devil" is coming to 4K and Blu October 28th from Kino Lorber. They are also releasing "Hardware" on 4K and Blu, but no date so far.

-No date yet and horror adjacent, but Arrow is releasing "The Mask" on 4K in the future.

-The original negative for "Day of the Dead" has been found, and will be getting a 4K release from Shout in the US and Second Sight in the UK

I watched Until Dawn (2025) last night. I LOVE the game, played through it a few times, and even LDP had a blast going through it with me.

And you know what? I liked the movie. It's virtually a complete departure from the game save for three parts (I'll spoiler tag them), and while I can say it's not a masterpiece by any stretch it's still some enjoyable junk food with a fun twist on the "time loop" mechanic, gruesome kills, and some great creature design.

The cast does their job, if nothing else. Odessa A'Zion (Nina) and Ji-young Yoo (Megan) stand out the most, but Ella Rubin (Clover) pulls her weight, and both Michael Cimino (Max) and Belmont Cameli (Abe) do fine enough. This is a movie best viewed as a throwback to the 80s horror renaissance. A fine addition to any marathon this coming spooky season between heavier hitters as a sweet little snack. I expect this one is going to grow on people and we'll be seeing more positive things said about it in a few years. 6.5/10

-The Wendigo being the principal creatures
-Peter Stormare as Dr. Alan Hill
-The weaving of one person's fear being the root of what occurs, a clever take on the game's prologue having the player choose A or B on "what is scarier to you" options that would influence jump scares throughout the game

So last week spent some time going through the Hell House LLC films. I had not seen any of these prior, always heard good things about the franchise in general, and seeing that the newest one was coming out this weekend, and in theaters, I thought I'd give them a shot.

The first one legitimately got me a bit tensed up for sure, and I felt like the second one also was just about as good as the first. Unfortunately, the third took a negative turn in both the general story and the performances. Things rebounded with the forth, adding a bunch of additional context to the mythology with another seperate house that is connected to the main Abaddon one. They did a great job with some of these films as a claustrophobic experience that is hard to shake off. The found footage/mockumentary style has some moments, sometimes its a bit long in the tooth and repetitive to a degree though. Narrivately speaking, they also layer situations and characters almost akin to the Saw series in that there are a shitton of flashback and recollections to a moment from one film in how it connects to another. I had a fun but intense time with these films. I heard the original house in these films is actually a legit haunted house attraction, on a side note.

So then we get to the new one, Hell House LLC Lineage. This one takes a significant turn to be more focused on a non-found footage style, and a more dramatic narrative that focused on the trauma of one in particular character from part 3 that was very dislikable in that third film and even more hard to sit through the performance in the new one. Pace was slowed WAY down in this new one, and while it very intricately ties in multiple events and characters in the new one, while revealing some extra twist and turns in the mythology, it's very different than the other films, mostly not in a positive way. I've never experienced a franchise in which you absolutely MUST see the other films and probably soon beforehand so you remember all of the details of specifics addressed in this newest films. This might explain why theres been lots of negative reports on the latest film from what I read. If a person went blind into it without any knowledge of the other films, it would be such a confusing experience to say the least.

The marketing for this newest one in the theaters is that this is the final installment, but given what twist they dropped in the last seconds of this one, there is no way they are done making these films unless this one is a huge bust. FWIW, the showing on Saturday night for this was sold out in the theater I went to. So we will see what legs it has.

Jaws had its 50th anniversary run in theaters a couple weekends ago and I caught it in IMAX at the AMC on the last day. Pretty pricey day out, but it was worth the money spent. I've seen Jaws countless times since I was 8-9 years old—it's my 4th of July entertainment—and still heard/saw a lot of details that I hadn't noticed before. Always one of my favorite movies and IMAX was a great way to see Jaws on the big screen!
