General Marvel/ Studios News and Events

I'd be surprised but if the number is right and if Sony is hard up enough it could happen. I don't want to see Disney gain even more power generally but this would be a case where I'd be happy because I'd like all the Marvel properties under one roof AND no more terrible Spider-Man spinoffs.

This looks SO good. They kept all the violence from the netflix show and seem to be following a lot of the best elements from the more recent Daredevil comics which is a big plus.

The Netflx run of Marvel shows was what hooked me into the Superhero movie phase. I'm pretty burnt out on it but this is definitely a must watch.

Reviews aren't good for Cap 4: Brave New World

I expect it to have a solid opening, but I can't see it having legs if the audience word of mouth is similar.

Yeah I feel like if Fantastic Four isn't a big hit this series is functionally dead if not literally dead. Would show that people have completely moved on. These things have a moment in time and I think the people who predicted this would go the way of westerns were probably correct.

I do wonder if Ant Man 2 (Ant Man And The Wasp) would get a 87% rating in the current landscape. The first two Ant Man movies feel like 20% higher of a RT score than they deserve. Captain Marvel is another one that has a good score, but probably wouldn't now. And Guardians Vol 2 has a 85% score that is somehow higher than Vol 3.

All of those movies came out at a time when the MCU could literally take a shit on the screen and get over a 80% fresh on RT. That time is long over. These movies either have to have the right amount of fan service and large scale to connect (Deadpool And Wolverine) or legit be a good movie (GOTG 3) to make money now.

We'll see how Fantastic Four does. If it's really good, but disappoints at the box office, that will be really bad for the MCU. Since a critically acclaimed MCU film has yet to flop.

Capeshit is never going the way of westerns. It's too adaptable. The Western glory period was 45-65 where they were HALF of all studio pics.

Superman came out in 1978 (if not further), since then you've had megahits every decade. They go through periods where they wear out their welcome but they always come back. There's clearly still an appetite for capeshit because Marvel and DC have both had movies that have made a shit ton of money in the last 5 years.

The worst case scenario is like after the 90's Batman movies (and all the other capeshit in its wake) fatigued the market. It goes away for years until someone comes back with a fresh take on it and a new generation is ready for it.

I wonder if a more sustainable solution is to just focus on a specific franchise and not try to make some big shared universe. Then you avoid having to catch all these random shit series just to know what's going on in your own universe. One reason why I liked Daredevil so much.

From what I've heard, "Brave New World" went through some bad test audience screenings and reshoots, so it was probably doomed from the get go. Poor Anthony Mackey. Also, there's controversy about one of the Superheroes being from Israel, and there were pro Pakistan demonstrators that protested outside of a screening

Worth pointing out that Disney has been doing this

I won't be seeing that movie (both a combination of disinterest and our local movie theater now being gone), but I think one of the reasons some people were happy with the trailer for "Fantastic Four" is that it actually looks like a real movie and not just concrete colored slop. Even I thought it was a good trailer. Granted, they'll likely do this in the third act, but I get why people would be excited for it. It's amazing to me that there are still people excited for "Brave New World" and "Thunderbolts" or whatever, which look super bland IMO.

It kind of was. I think since Endgame, I've liked Shang Chi and Guardians Vol 3 and that's about it. I didn't even like Deadpool And Wolverine, but I get why people got so much fun out of it. Even the prime MCU years, there's only a few I truly think are really good movies. For me, I really like Black Panther, Captain America: Winter Soldier, Iron Man 1, Infinity War, and Endgame (Warts and all). The Tom Holland Spideys are little too cutesy or something. The humor doesn't land for me. Same with Ant Man and Guardians 1 tbh. I'm actually scared to watch Thor Ragnarok which I really liked at the time. But, it really started the 24/7 quips and random humor that the MCU has been overusing. Love And Thunder might of retroactively ruined the movie.

I'm at the point where I'm only watching the essentials, so I'll be skipping Cap 4 and probably Thunderbolts unless the reviews are great. Fantastic Four I'm going to watch regardless because I'm curious and it has Vanessa Kirby at least.

MCU has been very hit or miss (mostly miss) for me since Endgame. Black Panther 2 was really good and I even liked No Way Home. Didn't see Guardians 3 and I actually just watched Deadpool and Wolverine last weekend and while I liked the fan service, the movie itself was really weak.

Really liked the first 2 eps of new Daredevil. So much more adult then any of the other Disney shows and it continues the netflix stuff nicely. They don't blow their load in the first 2 episodes either and are actually building up to the big moments.

Vinny D is so great as Kingpin. I wish he could be used as a movie villain tbh. Maybe in a Spidey movie?

Watched Deadpool & Wolverine last night. It was perfectly fine, and it kept the same tone as the first two, but the need to tie it into the MCU hampered my enjoyment. Seeing a hundred other Deadpools was great (especially knowing that Blake Lively, Matthew McConaughey, and one of Ryan and Blake's daughters were among them), laughed hysterically at the "everyone has a Peter" reveal, but the stuff with Cassandra Nova just didn't work for me, brother.

It's all worth it for the meta jokes and the copious amounts of violence between Deadpool and Wolvie, of course, but after how much I adored Deadpool 2 there was no way this couldn't have been somewhat of a letdown. 7.5/10

Daredevil Born Again was basically everything I want from a Marvel show. Some solid fight scenes, not a lot of CGI shit, a FANTASTIC bad guy, adult themes, a solid beginning middle and end (a problem of the netflix shows), and left you wanting more.

I'm so happy they didn't settle for the first drafts because Berenthal turned down even appearing when he saw what they wanted and he is so fucking good (as always) here. He adds a ton by his presence and the entire theme of the show really sets up bringing the rest of the netflix vigilantes back in organically. The original idea for the opening scene was also terrible (to just show Matt crying and taking off his mask) versus the great scene we got. Never settle.

I really liked this season. I still think S1 of Daredevil is the best of the group (a lot of those fight scenes still feel revolutionary) but I liked the evolution of the characters through the season and the overall arc of Murdock/Daredevil.

Credit to Vincent D'Onofrio because he's managed to make this Kingpin into a literal career highlight type character (the kind that when he passes people will cite and as a bar for Actor B to try to top if future cast). I was initially weary of the Mayor aspect but Vincent's acting and just screen presence made me buy in completely.

I'm out on Superhero shit until next Batman and Avengers Doomsday because I love huge spectacles and movie clusterfucks.

I hope it is good, I don't know if I'll see it in theater or not. The only way Marvel is going to get people back though is by rebuilding trust that they're going to make stuff worth spending time on, whether that's tv like "Daredevil Born Again" or the movies. They can't flood the market with "just ok" or bad content. They also can't freak out if something that is good only makes so-so money. They need to rebuild.

That said I found out that The Sentry is in this and he's one of my favourite characters because he's bascially Schizo Superman.

I planned on just waiting until streaming for this one. Word of mouth has been overwhelmingly positive. Got tickets for tomorrow afternoon.
