Haven't read many graphic novels this year as of yet compared to what I usually do so that's keeping the page number up.

First reading update of the year,

67 books (last year 337 total)
554 page average (282 page avg last year) haven't been reading many comics this year so far to bring it down.

Finished up Stephen King's You Like It Darker. There was 1 story I wasn't that into but I mostly enjoyed all of them with a couple standing out for me. Worth checking out if you're into his writing or enjoy his short story collections.

I highly recommend that book to anyone that would like to take a glimpse at what southern West Virginia—an already embattled region of true Appalachia—had to face with big pharma and the opioids crisis. I know multiple people in this book.

Also, the next Governor of West Virginia, Patrick Morrissey, is prominently featured in the book. He is possibly worse than any Governor we have had in my lifetime, and the uninformed/supermajority party line voters have not even elected him yet.

@Dandy the author mentions that he wrote a story about a state senate candidate who was a pro wrestler who he exposed for making "lewd comments" on a message board. Do you know anything about this?

Yes. It was a local (Charleston, WV area), indy/outlaw mud show type of wrestling fed.

You can also Google “joshua martin wv senate” and find multiple articles about other dumb shit for him and his opponent.

that whole article is hilarious.

I finished the book. really good read. Not a lot of surprises about either the industry or how WV responded to it, but the personal touches were very good. I'd recommend it to others.

@tekcop
"In 2018, a powerful app for secure communications called Anom took root among organized criminals. They believed Anom allowed them to conduct business in the shadows. Except for one thing: it was secretly run by the FBI."

This made me think of your app and what I was joking about the other night lol.

Second reading update of the year!:
113 books (last year 337 total)
309.5 page average (282 page avg last year)

Much slower pace this year but I was way up last year than usual. I also usually do a big catchup on comics near the end of the year.

Got all of these for Xmas and two more on preorder!

Brandon Sanderson: Wind and Truth
RJ Barker: War Lords of WyrdWood
Anthony Ryan: Tide of Black Steel
John Gwynne: The Fury of The Gods
Greg Keyes: The Wind That Sweeps The Stars
Miles Cameron: Storming Heaven
Django Wexler: How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying
Ed McDonald: Traitor of Redwinter
Sebastian de Castell: Play of Shadows
R S Ford: Engines of Chaos
Larry Correia: Destroyer of Worlds

I'm sensing a (title) theme... CWM is Voldemort!

John Gwynne: The Fury of The Gods
Miles Cameron: Storming Heaven
Django Wexler: How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying
Ed McDonald: Traitor of Redwinter
Sebastian de Castell: Play of Shadows
Larry Correia: Destroyer of Worlds

Final 2024 Totals
238 Books
Avg page length of 260 pages
Longest was "The Last Mortal Bond" by Brian Staveley at 847 pages.
Best Fiction: "The Tainted Cup" by Robert Jackson Bennett
Best Non-Fiction: "Alexander at the End of the World" by Rachel Kousser
Best Comic Series: Something is Killing the Children or Vengeance of the Moon Knight

I was hoping to grab a bunch of books at the bookstore but I was only able to find two. Felt like half the fantasy section has been taken over by Romance-Fantasy at this point. I'm happy to see anyone reading or books getting sold but good lord most of that stuff is utter shit. Most of it looks like the stuff Dama shits out.

My favorite book I have read this year is: “The Master and Margarita” by Bulgakov. It’s not for everybody (my mom ended up really hating it) - but it’s one of the more unique books I have ever read - and funny. Of course he funniest Russian book I have read is “The Twelve Chairs” by Ilf and Petrov. That book is like if Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld were around in the early Soviet Union and decided to write a book (really funny).

The Master and Margarita has been on my shelf/to-read list for years. Maybe this post will be the push I need to pick it up.

I believe a (well-reviewed) film adaptation should be releasing in North America sometime soon as well. Although you’ll find it’s almost like a Stephen King book where it’s like, “how can they make a movie out of this?” The book is silly and absurd and you can see where later writers like Vladimir Sorokin got some of their inspiration to go “off the rails.” It’s funny, I had read Bulgakov’s “The White Guard” a few months earlier and it’s hard to believe it’s the same author (the former title being incredibly serious and straightforward).

Picked up a few art books coming Thursday/Friday: Full Metal Alchemist, Goosebumps, and Hiroyuki Imaishi released around 2020 (Gainax then Studio Trigger) and working through a new Edgar Allan Poe biography and Music History w/Queer Landscape.

If it's anything like the last few years of AVGN or Monster Madness, we're going to find out in a few years that it was entirely ghost written.
