More from the Worse than 2014 dept:

Having fallen from a solid lead of their division to out of the wild card after turning the trade deadline into a spec script for another Major League sequel, Milwaukee had a chance to make up ground, especially with the Phillies on a losing streak. 3 game series with the Mets. They had Burnes start game 1 vs the returning Max Scherzer then rushed Ashby back to open a bullpen game the next day. For a team needing to make up multiple games in the last 2 weeks, it'd probably be best to push Burnes's start back one day and do the bullpen thing (if you're going to rush a guy back for a couple innings anyway). The brain trust, however, wanted to keep Burnes on his regular rest for the first wildcard game. This is dumb, bad baseball. Kinda thing you do when you're leading a division, something they chose to relinquish several weeks ago. Scherzer did his Curt Hennig thing for 6 innings and Mets won game 1. The bullpen, shaky since, you know, getting rid of the all star closer (who's predictably regained much of his form in San Diego after a brief demotion to settle his mind) blew the next game. Brewers finally pick up a win yesterday afternoon. Phillies and Padres both won later last night. If everything that preceded still happened, now it's bad management, who apparently doesn't even realize what month or even year he's in at this point, that fails to pick up at least one game.

Even Costanza couldn't find one.
It's $12-16 to cross the George Washington Bridge, $25-35 to park at the stadium and really, a $10 ticket is going to end up costing way more. At least for this out of towner.

The Brewers' struggles are a source of relief for this beleaguered Phillies fan. There are rumblings from the base about throwing a top prospect in the bullpen but really, if you need to survive four rounds of playoffs is it worth throwing a hail mary like that? For the Brewers, if they can't win a game without Burnes what are they even going to get out of the playoffs anyway?

Mariners keep blowing games to the bumass Athletics. A four game lead with thirteen games left should be comfortable enough but I am feeling for my college bestie who is a diehard Mariners fan who has had little MLB related joy in his life since elementary school.

The Dodgers lead the NL in runs scored and least runs allowed. If that holds it will be the fifth straight year they led both categories. The random nature of the playoffs obscures how ridiculously dominant this team has been. How would they stack up against the best teams of all time? I could never say for sure, but these Dodgers have a lot more weapons than teams of the past.

MLB Network had a stat about Judge having the most "barrels" in a season, which goes back to 2015. I'm sorry, I know we don't have data but there's no way Judge got more barrels than Heinie Groh.

View attachment 1512
I know there's some fun poking but a lot of those 1920s-1930s hitters would swing 40+ ounce bats that probably had double the barrel size of modern day bats. Babe Ruth notoriously used bats weighing 40-45 ounces for the great majority of his career. Ty Cobb typically swung bats weighing 36-40 ounces.

For comparison, 2017 has Yunel Escobar swinging the heaviest bat in MLB at 34 ounces. Another cool article tracing the history of bats including a reproduction of a Nap Lajoie bat.

Pretty cool under the radar stat milestone: https://www.mlb.com/news/kyle-wright-wins-20th-game-of-2022

"Along with becoming the Braves’ seventh different 20-game winner and first since Russ Ortiz in 2003 ... Wright is positioned to become the first Braves pitcher to lead MLB in wins since Tom Glavine in 2000. He now stands with Glavine, Phil Niekro, Denny Neagle, John Smoltz, Greg Maddux and Ortiz as the only Braves pitchers to notch a 20-win season since the team moved to Atlanta in 1966."

Stat nerds can argue all they want but there's something ingrained about 20 Wins, hitting .350 in BA, or driving in 125 runs.

.300 is a part of language as much as anything. Ditto 100 RBIs and 20 wins. Never heard of 125 RBIs though.

For wrestling fans, today’s Braves/Phillies matchup is Morton vs. Gibson.

For me, I associate 125 RBI as kind of that level of the 50 HR season or 20 Win season where it doesn't sound very high but is surprisingly hard to reach for most players. Judge & Alonso have a chance to crack it while Jose Ramirez has an outside shot.

Crazy Stat: Juan Soto has had or has a near .400 OBP last year and this year despite hitting .242 and then .246 with Washington and .235 with San Diego. His ability to draw walks is truly legend level.

It can’t be a huge surprise given their success the last few seasons.

The Guardians had a hell of a week. From the last competitive division race in the league to clinching today.
Eh, it was a mixture of surprise as well as a jab at the Yankees as prior to the All-Star break they were being hyped as a juggernaut and it being a matter of "how early" would the team hit 100.

There is supposed to be terrible weather next weekend in Atlanta (hurricane like conditions apparently) for the Mets/Braves series. Those games obviously need to be played so I have no idea what MLB will do because there is only 1 off day before the playoffs start on Oct. 7. I don't know if it's too late to move the series to a neutral site. I think this happened to the Cubs like 15 years ago and the games were moved to Milwaukee IIRC.

It's highly unlikely he'll surpass Bonds but with 14 games left, he's got a chance to surpass Sammy Sosa for 3rd for single season HR record and an outside chance at surpassing McGwire for 2nd. Only three of the games are against teams jockeying for the playoffs (and even if you count the Orioles as a playoff contender, it's still less than half). I bet Rob Manfred is praying constantly that Judge surpasses at least one of the steroid mooks.
Things haven't been good since I posted this.
Eh but he's an anti vaxxer Yankee so frig 'em.

Sports Fact/Tidbits thread cross post.

I just saw that Don Mattingly is the all time winningest Marlins manager. Which is weird cause he's only had one winning season there (and that was the bastardized 2020 season). I wonder if he has the worst record for a franchise's all time managerial win leader.

Gotta be the worst for an existing franchise. There are several below .500, including Connie Mack.

Pete Alonso clubbed his 40th HR to remind people he's one of the premiere sluggers in MLB as well. Feels like he gets somewhat overlooked when people mention Judge, Stanton, Betts, Tatis Jr, Vlad Jr as one of the younger stars in the game.

Polar Bear is having a great season. Not only did he hit his 40th HR on the season, but he leads the league with 131 RBI, while hitting a solid .270 with a .872 OPS. Judge is having a beast of a season, but Alonso is right there. I live 5 minutes from CitiField and the news is covering Judge like I haven't seen them cover someone in years, and rightfully so, but Pete really needs some love, too. Also, Lindor is having a great bounce back season. After underperforming somewhat last year, he started the year really badly, he's hitting .275 with 25 HR and 103 RBI (a Mets record for a SS, and 6th in the league), and a .802 OPS.

So after reading a few articles/Twitter threads..

AITA for thinking Ohtani should be MVP this year and it isn't even that close?

I didn’t realize Red Sox had that many last place finishes but he’s right!

Has any franchise had a stranger decade than the Red Sox this past ten years? Two World Series wins and five last place finishes seems like a hell of a trajectory.

Although come to think of it, late ‘90s/‘00s Marlins may have done that too!

Edit- Looked it up on Wikipedia and from '97 to '07, Marlins only had three last place finishes. Hmm. @alkeiper , any input on similarly hot and cold franchises?
