MLB's "Spring Breakout" series starts tonight. It's a bunch of exhibition games with each teams' top prospects playing against each other.

Each Spring Breakout game will last seven innings, unless both teams agree to extend the contest to nine frames. The Padres and Mariners (Friday), Phillies and Tigers (Saturday) and Angels and Dodgers (Saturday) are all playing nine innings. There are no extra innings, so games can end in a tie.

Robert Murray of Fansided reports that the Athletics have reached an agreement with free agent infielder J.D. Davis. It's a 1 year deal for $2.5 Million with another $1 Million in incentives. Good low-risk signing for an above-average hitter who has 20-25 HR pop over a 162-game average for his career. He probably won't see that much action but could be a useful part-time bat.

Now I’m curious what a high risk signing would look like for the Athletics.
Somebody making $20 Million? ;)

Ross Stripling is gonna make $12.5 Million and is almost 20% of the entire payroll.

They’ve got about $170 million left to spend before they hit tax thresholds. They lost 112 games last season. They have league approval to move the team. The absolute worst case scenario, that they go bankrupt is actually not the worst case scenario because the owner selling would be good. The downside of anything they do is essentially just the status quo.

A lot of talk about Snell being the Cy Young winner struggling to get a contract, but I'm wary of his future performance. Snell's batting average against was abnormally low and he led the league in walks. He only averages about 142 innings a year. I don't see a disaster necessarily, but expecting a repeat of 2023 is probably a mistake.
