Music comments that don't warrant a thread

Tonight's events @ a local bar were opened by a Misfits tribute country band called "The Devils Farmhouse." It was exactly as advertised. Men dressed like cowboys, with accents, singing Misfits songs with all the twang and sound of CMT. I hate country music, so clearly I was not enjoying the schtick, BUT they told humorous jokes between songs (all with the intent to mock country folk) and they are clearly a talented group. I'm not sure how far they'll go with this gimmick, but they alleged they're heading toward "North of Wisconsin" after the New Orleans gig.

Their social media advertises them from "Canada" but there is an extreme lack of hard data on the band and a lot of the stuff since their page was created March of 2020 is centered around New Orleans. So I think it is just a full fledged gimmick by local musicians to bust out of the moth balls periodically. That's common.

Gimmick aside, they were nice guys. Thankfully the other acts were more on brand for me.

And tribute acts that turn the original artists' songs into other styles are cool with me. Fade to Bluegrass is one of the best Metallica tribute albums.

Regardless, that sounds much cooler than the Misfits tribute band a friend and I formed that lasted, approximately, half of a practice. Then we just got really drunk and started playing awful grind tunes.

Was able to confirm part of the gimmick is to pretend that they're a touring band from Canada and I missed all of that in the press. As in, I've seen most of them in other local acts and they do costumes and make up REALLY well.

This is great great news for me and @Laz 's favorite regional music, movies, and book store chain. My support for them has waned a bit due to kind of a mixed response to COVID-19 protocols but I'm back to doing all of my gift shopping there.

Not a surprise after the horrible decisions (and subsequent bad press) during the first year of the pandemic. Shuttering the doors of one of its largest locations (Salem, NH) and firing employees for questioning their (practically non-existent) safety policies? Ooooof.

Not that it makes up for the horribleness of the initial move but they did reopen that store and offer to rehire any of the aggrieved employees. No idea if they established stronger safety policies though.

My friend was actually at a couple Bull Mooses while he was home for the holidays and not surprisingly, he said the South Portland location, located right outside of the city was very good with everyone wearing masks while half the employees were massless at the huge flagship store in the 'burbs.

I have a pal, we're on "love you bro" level. His drag persona is based on "Winona Judd" so the recent passing of Naomi Judd has been a hard hit for him. He becomes "Winona" when performing so it's like he lost a relative. He's met the family a few times, so he's got real stock in being a fan. I don't even follow country much but as soon as the breaking news hit my phone I gave it a few minutes and checked in on him once I was sure natural course of him finding out happened. He was not well when we spoke and was gracious I checked in.

Today he let everyone on social media know that he's "planning something big" for a tribute. Due to geographical distance, I'm never able to make his gigs and as much as country isn't my jam, I think I'm going to make a trip for this one.
