I finished World 6 in Super Mario 3D Land. I just noticed the Princess danger portrait thing will move if you rotate the 3DS, and the sound will kick up too.

You win this time, Nintendo.

Huh... I guess I had seen that channel before with the Ghostbusters / Mario parodies, but thanks for the reminder.

Got my XL. Spent like a half hour messing around before even getting into a game. The screens are fucking huge. I'll post my friend code thing in the ID thread later.

I downloaded Super Mario Land 2 because I played the shit out of it on Game Boy and it still holds up pretty well.

So some of these games look awesome to me, if they utilize standard controls. I'd get a Wii U if I didn't have to use the nunchuck for these. Or do you not anymore?

NES Remix looks like a Wario Ware game without the Wario Ware branding... and more mini than micro.

This is not a complaint - in fact, just the opposite.

As far as I know, the gamepad is the main controller for every game, so you don't need to use Wiimote + Nunchuk if you don't want to (although you are given the option to do so). Multi-player will require the Wiimote or classic controller, though.

Super Mario 3D Land is so goddamn good. I also got Luigi's Mansion for XMas so that will get cracked open this week.

I just started playing it on the 31st with some friends and yeah, terrific. Much like SMB 2, I find I'm using Peach because the floating ability is so damn handy and I find myself at a bit of a loss / inconvenience when I can't use it. I use Mario and Luigi just because from time to time and Toad almost never.

I impulsively splurged on LOZ edition of the 3DS. I don't like that I have to use the stick to move Link but I'll probably get used to it. This game really makes me nostalgic for Legend of Zelda ALTTP.

If you have a Wii U deluxe edition - log into Nintendo's Digital Deluxe Program and check your points. I had no idea this thing existed and apparently have $15 in eShop credit as a result. :)

I was at Best Buy today and they were selling DKC Returns for the Wii and DKC Returns 3D for the 3DS. Which one should I get? I was leaning towards the 3DS because I just got one but it's five dollars more than the Wii version.

The 3DS version doesn't have waggle controls, if that makes a difference to you.

I prefer the Wii version, but the 3DS version looks just as nice.

I really wish the Wii version supported the Classic controller, because there are some really dumb things they make you do with the Wiimote, but when I started playing the 3DS version I found myself shaking the system at times.

I should probably play it again before Tropical Freeze comes out.

First part of a super-good nine part(!) documentary on the underground tournament sub-culture of Smash Bros. Melee. No, trust me, it's really good. The other eight parts are linked to the first video.

I'm going to get the Wii version of DK because I heard the 3DS runs at 30 FPS and has lower quality models.

In a snap news conference called in Osaka, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata admitted he had misread the markets and hadn't issued "the appropriate instructions.'' He said the company needed to change and "propose something that surprises our customers."

"The way people use their time, their lifestyles, who they are—have changed," Mr. Iwata said. "If we stay in one place, we will become outdated."

---

Mr. Iwata noted that Nintendo's sales in Japan were better than they were in the U.S. and Europe, and said the company needed a better way of keeping in touch with trends abroad.

"In Japan, I can be my own antenna, but abroad, that doesn't work," he said.

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/445870/nintendo-thinking-about-a-new-business-structure/

"We cannot continue a business without winning," Iwata said on Friday during a press conference attended by Bloomberg. "We must take a skeptical approach whether we can still simply make game players, offer them in the same way as in the past for 20,000 yen or 30,000 yen, and sell titles for a couple of thousand yen each.

"We are thinking about a new business structure," Iwata added. "Given the expansion of smart devices, we are naturally studying how smart devices can be used to grow the game-player business. It's not as simple as enabling Mario to move on a smartphone."

Investors and analysts have urged Nintendo to broaden its horizons and boost profits by embracing smartphones on multiple occasions over the past few years, but Iwata has always insisted that his responsibility is to plan for the long term, not simply to make a quick buck.

I hope this doesn't lead to them cannibalizing the 3DS (you know, the one thing they make that sells right now?) to jump into the mobile market.

Nintendo Confirms It Will Make Apps (And Maybe Games) For Phones: http://kotaku.com/how-nintendo-plans-on-tackling-its-toughest-year-1512339954

How Nintendo Plans on Tackling Its Toughest Year: http://kotaku.com/how-nintendo-plans-on-tackling-its-toughest-year-1512339954

Iwata said:
...in the current environment surrounding smart devices, we feel that we will not be able to gain the support of many consumers unless we are able to provide something truly valuable that is unique to Nintendo. Accordingly, I have not given any restrictions to the development team, even not ruling out the possibility of making games or using our game characters. However, if you report that we will release Mario on smart devices, it would be a completely misleading statement.

We are now sure that we can solve the technical problem of displaying Virtual Console software from Nintendo DS on the GamePad.

The dual-screen Nintendo DS, one of which is a touch screen, has a very strong software lineup, and so we plan to add the Virtual Console titles from Nintendo DS software to the future Virtual Console lineup for Wii U.

Unfortunately, however, after starting up Wii U, there is a wait of over 20 seconds before we can select a video game title, and hence it is not an ideal situation for users now.

To solve this problem, a quick start menu for the GamePad will become a reality after a future system update planned for early summer.

This new function is currently under development, and although we cannot show a demo with a real machine, we have made a video to show you what the function can do, so please take a look.

we have not been able to offer a decisive software title that enriches the user's gameplay experience when playing alone with the GamePad. This will be one of the top priorities of Mr. Miyamoto's software development department this year.

we will actively expand our character licensing business, including proactively finding appropriate partners.

if we can offer flexible price points to consumers who meet certain conditions, we can create a situation where these consumers can enjoy our software at cheaper price points when they purchase more.
---
We aim to establish a new sales mechanism that will be beneficial to both consumers and software creators by encouraging our consumers to play more titles and increasing a platform's active use ratio without largely increasing our consumers' expenditures.

Our future platform will connect with our consumers based on accounts, not devices.

Of course, when we do launch new hardware in the future, rather than re-creating an installed base from scratch as we did in the past, we wish to build on our existing connections with our consumers through NNIDs and continue to maintain them.
