Like I said in the chat, I don't know why these guys even bothered. This isn't like Jerry Rice with the Raiders who could still play (although Rice with the Seahawks is a different story). But for someone like Olajuwon to spend one season scoring 7 points a game in Toronto, what's the point?

Former Bears QB Mike Tomczak, I remember hearing him talk to a local TV station about how he used to have the growl of a Bear, but now he has the heart of a Packer.

Hall of Fame defensive end with the Saints.

I just finished reading Sweetness by Jeff Pearlmen and Payton seriously considered coming out of retirement when the Dolphins has a rash of injuries at RB in 1989. Now that would have been sad to watch.

Walter going to the USFL or WFL or what ever in 85 and missing the Bears 85 run would've been worse. IIRC the book says Payton didn't want to quit in 87 but sort of felt forced out, but that book was pretty (truthful??) harsh on poor Walter in many aspects.

The book seemed like a pretty truthful representation about Payton, it also revealed that the two other Payton-books had a lot of fabrications in them. Payton was broken down near the end of his career and seeing him run in a Dolphins jersey would have been painful. The book also goes over who bad of a GM Jim Finks was: Not hiring Bill Walsh, passing over Joe Montana who seemed like a lock to be drafted by the Bears, trading a pick to the Browns that netted them Ozzie Newsome, and had a chance at John Jefferson.

Same book, KOAB.

Even though they retired his number, this was odd to me.

Boggs lived in Tampa in the off-season. He was about ready to retire and was like, "hey, they've got this expansion franchise in Tampa, I can live at home, and maybe I can help the team"

Which I think was really cool of him (and awesome for him because he got to live at home). He'd already won his WS, played for two great franchises, it was a nice swan song for him

Plus, he was chasing 3000 hits, so if it wasn't Tampa it was going to be somewhere.

He actually ended up playing two seasons with the Rays, age 40-41, and was still pretty darn good as a DH. Hit .301 his last year.

I remember the season where The Rays had a 1992 Murderer's Row (Fred McGriff! Wade Boggs! Jose Canseco) but unfortunately, it was 1999.

And after reading an article about his injury troubles and how he might never play again, I have to say this might qualify in a couple years.

2000. It was actually Vinny Castilla instead of Boggs, who had retired. Castilla was always punchless outside of Coors Field. Canseco, McGriff and Greg Vaughn all produced. The rest of the team though was quite awful.

Rod Woodson in his single year as a San Francisco 49er in 1997, sandwiched between years in Pittsburgh (obviously) and Baltimore. Fun Fact: That 49ers D in 1997 had: Ken Norton Jr, Kevin Greene, Chris Doleman, and Gary Plummer as well reminiscent of that 1992 Murderer's Row remark in the post above.

Randall Cunningham was a Bodymore Raven (after looking up the image URL)? Also label the pics, people. Not all of us know who these dudes are from sight ;)

Can't say I "forgot" this one because I never knew about it till minutes ago. Darryl Dawkins at the Celtics' free agent camp in 1995, over six years since he had last played in the league. Looking at the C's roster from that season, I'm a bit surprised they didn't sign him.
