No. Famicom is what they called the NES in Japan. Though even I made that mistake when I first heard about Falcom. Falcom is the created of two of series that for whatever reason don't seem well liked outside of its own borders: Ys (pronounced EES) and Legend of Heroes.
Although Ys is a myth of the most beautiful city in the world that was thrown into sin by the daughter of Gradlon, Dahut's decision to steal the key to the gates of Ys under the influence of the red armored knight (who of course is the devil) and the city finally is swept away by a raging storm (tsunami, I guess). Not before Gradlon throws his daughter into that raging storm, causing her to become a mermaid for her punishment.
So why did I mention all that? Because Ys the series is very loosely based off that myth. You play as Adol Christin, a man with young bright red hair (sometimes wearing that same red armor as in the myth) and you go on adventures around the world of Ys. Adol has a habit of being in the right place at the right time on his adventures in Esteria, Celceta, Felghana, Xandria, the Canaan Islands, and Altago.
Ys is actually the first game to receive an orchestral soundtrack and therefore if you love video game music and its beauty, you actually need to thank Falcom and Ys for that. Well, you don't necessarily, I mean it would've been done eventually, but it was the first series that devoted so much effort into it.
Did I copy some of that from the Wiki? Yeah, just because I couldn't freaking remember the names and I wasn't really sure if I recalled some Ys information correctly. Ys Seven is the latest installment of the series and of course a continuation of Adol's adventure after the events of Ys Vi: The Ark of Nephatism. Ys 1 and 2 were remade for the DS as compliation caleled Ys 1 and 2, released by Atlus. XSEED is the ones handling Ys Seven and I think they might be working on Ys 1 and 2 on the PSP.
I was introduced to Ys via Ys VI: The Ark of Nephatism on the PS2. I loved the game because of the beautiful artwork and music, and therefore came to know about the series that way.
Though it was apart of the Dragon Slayer series originally, Legend of Heroes wasn't as highly loved as Ys until the release of Legend of Heroes VI: Sora no Kiseki. This is because of again another ground breaking idea to music by combining synthesized music, rock, and orchestral together. A lot of players more in the know than I about RPGs, they would prefer having Sora no Kisei's series brought over from Japan because it is probably the best RPG that doesn't get recognition and could very well be the best RPG.
As an aside, why am I calling Sora no Kiseki a series of games, when its a single game in the Legend of Heroes series and that's because it is a series of games. Legend of Heroes VI was so huge that it was broken into 3 separate games (2004, 2006, 2007 releases). Therefore a lot of people drop the designation of Legend of Heroes VI and just call the game Sora no Kiseki. Sora no Kiseki is broken down into FC (First Chapter), SC (Second Chapter) and 3rd.
This also leads to the bigger question of if this game is so good, why hasn't it been translated instead of waiting this long for someone to pick up the license? Each game gets bigger and bigger in terms of amount of text used. Sora no Kiseki FC was originally being fan translated before XSEED partnered with Falcom and that group that was doing it said it was over 50,000 pages worth of text that needed to be translated and was a daunting task for anyone wanting to translate it because of this. SC is probably the worst, as the Japanese version is the only PSP game that is on 2 UMDs. I can only imagine the hell that the translation team would've been going through, and even XSEED states that its certainly a daunting task.
I will admit that the only reason I found out about this series through looking for more information on the Ys series, Brandish (yes, they made this series as well) and Falcom.
And God dammit Thoth, don't correct Matt while I'm writing up my post on the subject. Bah, I'm posting this anyways.
