Two new PS3 SKUs were revealed, both containing full hardware based backwards compatibility with price and hard drive size being the only differences between. The 250 GB unit will be priced at $499.99 and the 500 GB model will return the PS3 back to its earlier $599.99 price point. When contacted for comment, SCEA's VP of Marketing, Jack DeVaney confirmed the new SKUs and prices:

"Increasing storage capacity helps us better communicate the value inherent in the PS3. Combined with built in Blu-ray, Wi-Fi, and full backwards compatibility, no other system can match our value proposition. One of the great things about the PS3 is that if you buy it today you can be confident it's going to be the centerpiece of your entertainment for the next 10 years. Economically, that's a great value."

The new PS3s will be available May 5th.

Sony double guessing themselves and reinstating backwards compatibility and then increasing the price points of PS3s (already the most expensive console on the market) during a recession? GENIUS!

Mothercocks!! $499 is what I paid for my fucking 80GB with BWC.

Posted by: Sabre April 02, 2009 04:34 pm
Fucking bastards, if they bring that ps3 out here i fear im going to have to get one. I need me some backwards compatability.

Posted by: Obi Chris Kenobi April 02, 2009 04:37 pm
Interesting that this comes a few weeks after the PS2 price cut was announced ($99, €99) though the UK PS2 remains £99. Not sure what I make of it this, I'm happy with the PS3 I have. Backwards Compatibility would have been nice, but I don't think I'd have actively gone out to buy PS2 games.

If I had had a PS2 and a games collection already, then it would be a different matter.

Posted by: Sabre April 02, 2009 04:48 pm
The main reason i want backwards capabilty is because my existing ps2 is nearly dead. It often locks up and i have a nice collection of games that id like to replay but cant get to enjoy because they lock up.

And i dont really want to spend £99 on another ps2, id rather put the money towards a backwards compatable ps3.

Speaking of the PS3 & HDD's.. how much of a pain in the ass is it to change the HDD? I mean is it as simple as doing it on my PC or is there some kind of formatting that the PS3 HDD needs to have, etc?

Posted by: Sabre April 02, 2009 05:03 pm
Upgrading the PS3 HD is easy.

1) you need an external HDD for backup purposes if you wish to do so.

2) pop the cover off, undo the blue screw and slide the HDD out.

3) unscrew from caddy and screw in the upgrade.

4) reinsert etc

5) turn on, and let the ps3 format it for you. I needed to have the latest firmware on an external device for some reason before it would format tho.

And depending on how big your new HDD is it (mine was 320gb and took an hour) will determin how long its going to take to format.

Fuck the PS3 for not working with my 5 year old projection TV. I want to play. sad.gif

Posted by: Sabre April 02, 2009 05:12 pm
OO i meant to post this in the place that shall not be named.

Apparntly the PS3 doesnt do HD unless its through HDMI. I dont know if this is true as i got told by a co-worker.

Posted by: Smues April 02, 2009 05:39 pm
Wait the price change/model change is real? I was sure it was an April Fools joke.

Posted by: Obi Chris Kenobi April 02, 2009 05:43 pm
Yeah it was, I'm a day late though sad.gif

EDIT: and I thought I needed something to create the PS3 thread with.

Posted by: Sabre April 02, 2009 05:49 pm
oh damn you.

Posted by: Obi Chris Kenobi April 02, 2009 05:52 pm
haha sorry! I'd have liked backwards compatibility too, honest! While we're talking about PS3 prices, I still find it odd that Sony aren't going to drop the price of the PS3 considering they're almost 50% more expensive then the the 360, there's a recession and, well, it'd be nice!

Posted by: Smues April 02, 2009 06:16 pm
The only reason I own a PS3 is because they were discontinuing the fully backwards compatible models and I wanted one. Otherwise I'd still have my money and not the big black dust collector.

Sony never drop the prices of their machines, and when they do its usually because they have either A) a new slimline coming out or cool.gif its replacement.

Posted by: Kahran Ramsus April 02, 2009 06:41 pm
So the rumoured price drop isn't going to happen? I guess I have no reason to delay buying one then. I just didn't want to finally buy a PS3 and then have the price drop two weeks later.

Cool and as for backing up save games and all that, that stuff can be stored on a flash drive, right?

MI6: PS3-to-Facebook integration 'coming quicker than some may think'

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/08/mi6-ps3-to-facebook-integration-coming-quicker-than-some-may-t/

The MI6 Games Marketing Summit is going on right now and our man on the scene, Randy Nelson, just dropped an interesting tidbit in our laps. During a panel titled "Casual to the Core: Redefining the Gaming Dynamic," SCEA's John Koller talked about social media and how it can affect the games space. When asked by panel moderator John Davison if there would ever be a point when someone could be playing PS3 and have it "spit out something to Facebook," Koller stated that plans are already afoot. He said that such functionality is "critical not just for marketing but for the types of games we're trying to develop. That day is coming quicker than some may think."

One must try to remain skeptical of this, however. Koller didn't say any specific Facebook implementation would be coming, and could have just been referring to social media interaction as a whole. Still, we must admit it's a great idea, if only for something small like real-time Trophy updates for your Facebook friends.

Trade-in 4 PS2 Games at Amazon, Save $50 on a PS3

In addition to the regular trade-in offer on PS2 games, Amazon is offering an additional $50 worth of savings towards the purchase of a PlayStation 3.

Between now and April 19, trade in four PS2 games using Amazon’s trade-in service and in addition to the gift card, Amazon will also knock $50 off the purchase of an 80GB PlayStation 3.

Do you have a PSP? Streaming PS1 games from the PS3 to a PSP is the only use I ever get out of my PS3, but it's pretty cool.

How does that work anyway? Do you dl the games onto the psp or does it always have to be connected to the ps3 for you to play them?

You connect to the PS3 through wi-fi and it streams it. You can connect directly, or even through the internet from far away, though I don't know how well that works. Amazingly logging my PSP onto the net and streaming that way works better for me at home than connecting directly to the PS3, but I can't imagine it would work as smoothly from outside my local network. I pray for the day they do let you just dl your entire PS1 games to the PSP though.

Can you connect your PC to your PS3 directly? I am forever transferring AVI files to play on my PS3 using memory sticks and it would save so much damn time.

Using Windows Media Player, go into the options and check the box entitled "share" or something like that, then when you turn on your PS3, click the "search for media servers" icon and it will find all your files on your computer.

I can stream all supported audio and video files from my PC directly on my PS3. It's cool.

Actually here: http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/connectdlna.html

That link should be of use for you.

My PSP has been acting a little wonky lately. It'll start up fine and play a game but as soon as I hit the square button a couple of times it turns itself off. Anyone heard of this happening with the PSP?

Hack the firmware, its totally safe if you follow the instructions. Then PS1 downloads FTW

If you own a PSP and a PS3, you owe it to yourself to make a Japanese PSN account and grab AdHoc party. It suddenly makes certain PSP games palatable, such as Monster Hunter, and Phantasy Star.

For those who don't already own it, Bionic Commando Rearmed is now $4.99 for a limited time on the PSN. Picked it up last night and its a pretty cool throw back game.

Stupid question: How does one recover the password data for a PS3? My roomie owns one, and we need to change some of the account info, but he's forgotten his password. There must be some way to have that password retrived we figure, but we didn't see an option for it. Is there a website where he can enter some info and have his password e-mailed to him?

Thanks for any help.

So, the original Resident Evil: Director's Cut in now on the PSN for download. I'm a big RE fan, and I never actually got to play it on the Playstation. DO you guys think I should pick it up, or leave it alone? It's a PSOne game, and it doesn't look like it have aged well so that is why I'm leaning towards leaving it alone.

Do you have the ability to play the remake that was released on Gamecube (and hence Wii)? If you do I'd go for that. The original PSX Resident Evil hasn't aged as well as something like Metal Gear Solid.

PSP Go - anyone know if this is going to be region free? I know the games are via download at the PS Store.. but since I can download from the Japanese Store and play games on my Region 1 PS3.. I wonder if I will be able to do the same with the Go or if it will be "country code locked" a la the DSi.

I'm a big RE fan as well and must have beaten the first game about 10 times, on the Playstation, Gamecube and the DS. I still downloaded it. It's a good game, man. Hasn't aged incredibly well, but it's still worth the ten bucks in my opinion.

So supposedly now PS3 has added: Ratchet & Clank: Future Tools of Destruction, MGS 4, Army of Two two its greatest hits collection and you can get them each for $29.99

The Force Unleashed is also $29.99 but I don't think it is part of the greatest hits, I think it just dropped for other reasons. I have been waiting FOREVER for Ratchet & Clank to get a price drop.

Bout damn time that the Ratchet & Clank price dropped. I always wanted to play it, but I wasn't going to pay $60 for a game that came out around the launch time. Now if only the price will drop for the first Uncharted then I would be a happy camper.
