I've been wanting to upgrade to a PS3 for a while now but I've always looked for a backwards compatible model so I can still take advantage of my PS2 catalogue (I wouldn't be keeping my PS2 btw). So anyways, those older PS3 model have lately gone price insane with $650 and the such but I just came across a couple 80GB older models (from the Motorstorm bundle) for $480 (new) and $410 (almost new). Both have the sixaxis controller which I don't like much but I have to buy another anyways so I'll get my dualshock3 yet. I'm on a budget and I'm also cheap, so would you guys say a slightly used PS3 should give me no trouble or should I go with the extra $70 just to get it new?

Id say the slightly used is the way to go, but just be careful that the blu ray drive etc isnt faulty.

Also, the ps3 doesnt play every ps2 game properly, many refuse to boot and suffer ingame freezing etc.

Only reason I own a PS3 was because of discontinuing the backwards compatibility. I've had zero issues with BC on mine, but, IIRC wasn't it only the original 60gb that had the full compatibility? And the 80gb didn't?

Aye the 60gb is the version with the ps2 chipset, where as the 80gb used emulation which backfired. Sony then gave up and scrapped it.

Then my advice to pocho is go for the 60gb with the ps2 chip. Don't trust the emulation!

Oh and I think this is a good chance for a FUCK YOU Sony. It's been awhile, so I feel like I can throw that out there again.

No, the 20 GB "available" (lol) at launch had full BC, too. However, Sony underproduced them, claimed they didn't sell as well (bullshit; people can't buy something that hardly even exists--not that either were burning up sales charts), and discontinued them like 5 minutes afterwards.

Ahh. Then I must have just chosen the 60gb for the storage space.

...

Wasn't there something or other besides storage space that the 20gb didn't have that the 60gb did?

No wifi or onboard card readers. The latter of which I believe has been cut too in currently shipping models.

EDIT: appears so:

Aha yes wi-fi was what I was remembering. I like (see: get annoyed by) the fact that the units with the most no marks on that chart are the currently in production ones. Even if the essence of the Playstation 3 dna WAS real change, it appears that Kaz was wrong and the consumers were in fact NOT ready.

Hmmm, heard of any BC problems with the Guitar Hero Series (at least GHLOR and GHWT)? Those could be my main concern as far as compatibility goes. As for the guitar controller, I'm getting a new Kiss Axe guitar anyways so no problems there
I'm well aware of the chip/software emulation issues but I just didn't wanna look up for an older 60GB console. Guess I'll do a search anyway and see if I find a decent one just in case.

So I'm in the market for a PSP - should I go 3000 or 2000? I've hard some "horror stories" about the crazy amount of scanlines on the 3000's.. but also have seen videos where the colours and brightness on the 3000 are leaps and bounds above the 2000. Argh, which should I get? :(

From what I understand if you have any intention of ever hacking it to run homebrew aps and such don't get the 3000.

I'm good w/o homebrew stuff. This is really for casual gaming on the go so I don't wanna put too much effort into this thing. :)

Well in that case my knowledge of the 3000 is limited to its lack of home brew ability. I'm guessing it's probably slightly better than the 2000, but as a 2000 owner I've had no issues with it and have never found myself thinking 'I wish I had waited and got the next incremental upgrade model because I love giving Sony my money so much.'

Do you get a lot of ghosting on your 2000? That's the main thing I'm reading about is 2000=ghosting and 3000=scanlines. Both are readily available to me for the same price I just want to figure out which is worse/more distracting. =\

I haven't seen any ghosting on mine, but admittedly most of my gaming consists of ps1 games streamed through my ps3, and not actual UMD games. Although I did play a fuck load of FF: CC and never had any issues.

I want a PSP, but I really don't know if I should wait for the Go to come out, or if I'll be safe with an older model. Plus there's that Dissidia bundle...

I've read up on the Go, and I ask myself, does this concept work? Not being able to have a UMD option, but strictly downloading games onto the system.

So we've had the 1000 Fat Model, the 2000 Slim and Lite, and the 3000 Model with a microphone.

I'll be honestly, I've had two different version of the 2000, the regular black and the Madden 09 Blue one, I find it very solid and recommend it very much. The Fat model is just a pain to hold when playing, but, it is probably a lot cheaper than the slim simply because of it's age.

There's a new PS3 bundle coming to Best Buy with Killzone 2 and MGS4. I was going to get the MLB 09 bundle, but damn.

Man, just got my PSP2000 this weekend.. trying to figure out how to hack this thing and it's a bit of a pain in the ass. So many different functions or hacks or firmwares or whatever that you have to use.. argh. Anyone here have a simple guide to this shit? I really just want to create ISO's of my PSX game discs and load them on to the PSP..

Anyone know of a good and cheap PS2 to PS3 memory card adapter? I just don't feel like starting from scratch with all my PS2 games on the PS3. Or is there another way of doing the transfer of saved data?

Right, I start my new job in a few weeks which means in roughly 40 days time I will be able to finally buy new games. I have currently only got:

Guitar Hero: World Tour
Guitar Hero: Aerosmith
GTA IV
Sega Genesis Collection

--

Yeah, due to being out of work I ended up selling/trading my games away.

What good/great games are currently out there or will be coming out in the next six weeks that are worth getting?
