Sports Cards Hobby Thread 2.0

"In the blink of an eye, we were receiving 180,000 cards per day and had accumulated a backlog of more than 11 million cards.

When 2021 began, PSA could process and ship an average of 18,000 cards each day. That number has more than doubled. We are expected to average 40,000 cards per day in the final quarter of 2021 and have every reason to expect continued increases.

With the implementation of new employees, tools, and processes, the backlog has now been reduced to 7.5 million and continues to shrink every day."

But yes, let's start regular service back up even if it's $100 a card or whatever. PSA's gonna be so fucked for years at this rate.

The (break it down *crotch chop*) of 2021 Panini Prizm Football

Suggested Retail Price = $325 (lol)

440 Card Base Set [330 Veterans, 110 Rookies]. Personally, I love big base sets so I'm all for this. More players included, the better. Considering there were 259 players drafted, I do wish they included more rookies but it seems most brands are pretty limited in that aspect.

1 Box = 12 Packs, 12 Cards per Pack. 24 Rookies (2 per Pack), 5 Inserts, 10 Serial #'d Parallels, and 4 Silver Prizms (1:6 Packs so again not rare but shoot 'em to the moon!).

So a rough Box Break = 144 Cards. 99 Base Cards. 24 Rookies. 10 #'d Parallels. 5 Inserts. 4 Silver Prizms. 2 Autos.

New Inserts = Manga (would be cooler if they had legit Manga artists draw them tbh), Prizm Break, and New Recruits.
Buddy pulled a Mac Jones auto rookie, from this set, #'d to 149 or 199, I forget. We started talking grading options and I was trying to guide him to SGC or to wait on PSA/BGs. He said, "well my brother is high on HGA." So while I'm leery on HGA, Prizm is probably the best set to use their color matching label.

A few returns from BGS, BAS, and CSG:

"We are testing this process with Regular in preparation for the eventual return of Value and other lower-priced service levels in 2022.

Specifically, this first phase will involve virtual queueing events. Regular submissions will be priced at $100 per card, with a limited number of allocations awarded in each event."

FAQ
I’m still waiting on a Value order to be processed. Why are you accepting Regular orders while you still have a backlog?

PSA remains committed to allocating over 80% of our grading resources to processing orders in the backlog. The re-introduction of Regular will not slow the processing of the backlog of Value orders."

Yeah, uh-huh, I'm sure it won't impact the backlog... but it certainly helps pad and fatten their wallets!

Two new (to me) additions to the Frank Thomas registry:

After adding them to the registry something changed.

Could that be a 1 under my rank? Usually its a 2.

YOUR NEW NUMBER 1 RANKED FRANK THOMAS REGISTRY!!!!

abell46s-reface.gif

So many in the hobby to thank, but mostly, I'm just glad I have a support system that doesn't shame me for my hobby.

Does it say how many cards are in each person's registry numerically beyond the completion %? Do you get more points for rarer cards/higher grades?

Yes, my # is lower but my average grades, and points attained, are higher. I have a lot more still pending from Spring - Summer 2020 that will hopefully get 8.5 or higher. I know some GPKs I sent in May 2020 have populated, I have a Frank rookie with them. But apparently several got graded that day so I don't know which one is mine and my bulk Facebook guy hasn't messaged me yet. I've charted at least a week that passes between pop date and him having them sorted for messaging, so we shall see.

Threw an order at Burbank of about 26 serial numbered cards of Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson (4-5 cards IIRC), and Tom Glavine (by the far the guy I went the lowest serial numbers on b/c he was cheaper around the /100 to /250 level area) for about $99.

My thought processes...
Maddux = 355 Wins. Won 4 Cy Youngs and had a case for 1997 & 1998 too. 18 Gold Gloves and 1 WS Ring. Retired after the 2008 Season.
Johnson = 303 Wins. Won 5 Cy Youngs and had a case for 1997 & 2004 too. Had over 4,800 strikeouts and 1 WS Ring. Retired after the 2009 Season.
Glavine = 305 Wins. Won 2 Cy Youngs and had a case for 1996 & 2000 too. At his height, had an ERA+ of almost 140. 4x Silver Slugger(!) and 1 WS Ring. Retired after the 2008 Season.

I think those 3 pitchers are super underrated for what they did throughout the 1990s/2000s in a "Steroids Era", the fact they all won over 300 Games and have 1 WS Ring (I don't see many modern-day pitchers approaching even the 275 Win mark tbh), and are pitching faces of a franchise or two (in Randy Johnson's case with Seattle & Arizona and Maddux you could argue the Cubs with the Braves). I truly believe that at least Maddux and Johnson will be held in the same tiers as Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson, Nolan Ryan, etc. in 20-30 years time especially amongst our generation of baseball fans.

Fun Fact? Tom Glavine had more 20+ Win seasons at 5 than Maddux (2) or Johnson (3).

Amazing pick ups. Speaking of amazing: A high school friend that got back into the hobby messaged me an SGC 10 Brees rookie from 2001 Upper Deck Vintage (the blue and red cards from 2001) that he picked up. Seller had it listed for $100 so my friend placed it on his watch list so he could sleep on it. He woke up to "Seller has offered you a deal, $70." so he stopped thinking and pulled the trigger. I've found SGC grades hard and my own experiences with 2001 Upper Deck Vintage indicate it is a hard card to keep in Gem shape (actually put a 2001 UD Vintage Deuce McAllister in my donate pile last night b/c of corner dings being way obvious with the blue). So honestly, for a HOF rookie, condition sensitive card, in 10 shape, $70 is a steal. Even if BGS/PSA crossover was attempted, a 9.5 or a 9 would still be a hard accomplishment for that card. He's found himself fond of SGC, so he's not crossing it. Which, if you're starting out and you grade first with SGC, it's not a bad company to have loyalty with.

He and I are still on the fence about doing a tandem submission to Golden Grading out of Baton Rouge, $15/card, but if we go through the shop it's $10/card. Since it is a niche, local company with no national footprint, we're thinking PC cards only.

Yeah, I'll do a detailed breakdown when the offer's accepted/the items are shipped in case any cards get refunded.

That 2001 Vintage Drew Brees Rookie in SGC 10 is a steal at $70. As you said, SGC generally grades tougher. Raw they're going for $15-$20 and in a PSA 9 they're going for $45-$50 still.

Definitely go PC only with Golden Grading. I'd stick with lower-end stuff, your $1-$3 raw base cards level, and limit the submission count overall (3-5 cards per person so you get a feel for their grading consistency). If possible, send in some cards from sets you've already had graded by a PSA or BGS (duplicates would be ideal) or at least cards you can look at and go: Okay, this card would likely be a BGS 8.5 with 9 Centering/9 Corners, as you can immediately tell the credibility in their grading by comparing/contrasting. Nolan aka Eliteco3 does a great job at writing down a "pre-grade" (what he expects the grade should be) and what he gets back for comparing and to help train his eyes.

Always be wary of all these upstart grading companies. There's a reason that PSA/BGS/SGC have remained the kings and even long-term "companies" like GMA have struggled (never mind the issues being seen with more 'reputable' places like HGA). I feel like CSG has the best long-term play in terms of becoming that #3/#4 grading company due to their comics history but it's going to take a few years for them to establish that credibility.

I've had a few additions lately. Got a 2021 Diamond Kings Blackout (a case hit) of Christian Yelich. Some ome graded stuff: 1990 Classic WWF Jesse Ventura and a 1993 Score Robin Yount 3000th hit both PSA 10. And, just now, a 1935 National Chicle Clark Hinkle rookie. He's a hall of famer who played for the Lambeau era Packers. That one's an SGC 1 but the pictures look better than that. The Hinkle was on my Top 10 most wanted cards list for a long time.

Awesome stuff, I always love those 80s/90s cards that commemorate key milestones for players such as 3000 Hits or 500 HR or even the 1,000 Yard Club RB/WR for the NFL cards. IIRC Eddie Murray had similar cards in 1995 or 1996 when he got 3000 Hits. Sweet get on the Clark Hinkle too. An under-the-radar holy grail card of mine is a Benny Friedman but I haven't pinpointed a year yet, mostly because he was the true godfather of the passing game in NFL history.

Here's the breakdown of my Burbank order with prices included. I've found that 1997-2005 area is quickly becoming my wheelhouse for several reasons: #1 - Serial #'d Cards were much scarcer for the most part and true parallels were usually serial numbered anyway; #2 - Collectors/Investors are not really looking at those years outside of rookie cards at best leaving a lot of under the radar gems dirt cheap; #3 - A lot of these serial numbered cards were essentially case hits or hobby box hits at best (nevermind the actual player breakdowns). The 2002 Bowman's Best Blue was 1:6 odds but it was a 90 card set, there were just 10 packs per Hobby Box, and the product was Hobby exclusive; #4 - Investors look down on the serial numbered cards that are high e.g. the 2002 Donruss Elite All-Star Salutes ignoring that the print run matches the MLB season. To me, it adds more of a historical context and feel to the card.

Just did a monetary breakdown of what I spent from July 2020 - December 2021. Not trying to $$ shame or anything but more to see if my spending habits changed in 2021 and what I likely saved in free shipping through Beckett. It does really highlight how I'm more Ben Graham in trying to pick up on the cheap with the price point being the key factor and potentially profit in 10+ years compared to Warren Buffett's strategy of picking blue-chip value stocks and holding them long-term.

$3,088 spent picking up 765 Cards (Average $4 per Card). Spent an average of $181 per month (skewed by a $283 order on 12/18/2020. Spent $100+ on less than half the total orders). Total Orders = 35. Free Shipping probably saved me around $100 to $210 (about what I'd put in my Vanguard account). Drastically cut my card purchases from an average of 70 a month in 2020 (July-Dec) to just 30 a month in 2021 and that number will (hopefully) drop in 2022.

Price Point Breakdown
$2.25 or Less = 202 Cards (26.4%)
$4.00 or Less = 483 Cards (63.1%)
$7.00 or Less = 677 Cards (88.5%)

$10.00 or More = 39 Cards (5.1%). This is skewed because the graded cards are what I usually spent the highest on.
$20.00 or More = 5 Cards (0.65%). These were: 2014 Finest A.J. Green Auto/Jersey Gold Refractor /50 Raw ($21.99), the Jimmy G BGS 9.5 Rookie Card, Annika Sorenstam BGS Card, Topps Chrome BGS Pristine Le'Veon Bell RC, SGC 10 Tom Glavine ($39.99 - Most I spent on a single card).

Not too surprising that in the long run, I'll probably be burned the most on those graded cards like the Jimmy G and Bell pickups but Jimmy's in his Patriots uniform so that gives it more of a PC factor. The Bell was more to own a BGS Pristine 10 in the hopes he could rejuvenate his career somewhat.

I've had a few additions lately. Got a 2021 Diamond Kings Blackout (a case hit) of Christian Yelich.
If that was a pull then congrats on not only getting the case hit but for your team as well. Of you bought it, well congrats on getting a cool card and checking off a DK insert set I haven't been able to get a cars from yet.

I'm not a fan of case hit insert sets, since it's impossible for most people to complete them, but when it's just one or two sets it doesn't bug me that much, and my goal (which I can survive not attaining but being a completionist is the worst) is just to get one card from each.

Then there's God damned Diamond Kings with its SEVEN fucking case hit or worse insert sets. Out of 15 total. And they aren't small either, I believe DK has 250 insert cards, and 120(!) are in those fucking seven sets. I've got Dansby Swanson Aurora and Blake Snell Street Art. Snell I bought for $1 plus 3.95 shipping, and Swanson...I don't even know where I got him, he just showed up in the mail and I couldn't find anything in my email or ebay, but I was buying so much shit I could have bought it and not remembered, or bought Atlanta in a break I never watched. (I have a big problem, I know).

I don't know if I'll bother continuing to try and get one from the other five, but the Downtown cards look awesome and I'd really like one. And Blank Slate is ok, but after seeing the Chipper Jones one (and getting outbid) I really really want that too.

On the better side of luck with case hits, I got a Gerrit Cole Deep Space from a pack of Spectra this weekend. And while of course I didn't get the case hit insert card (Neon or Fort Knox), over the course of a month or so I bought 6 boxes of Optic Baseball (12 boxes in a case) from my LCS and got 3 of the 4 case hot boxes (two prism and one auto), the case hit Photon parallel, and the case hit Crisis parallel. I dont really care for Photon, and it's on an Anthony Santander card which is meh. But, I wanted a Crisis since I first saw it on a break, and I got it on Acuna's Diamond Kings card so that was probably the best outcome for me.

Both parallels were in separate boxes, so 5 of the 6 I bought had a case hit or were hot boxes. Likely not buying anymore because I won't hold that luck, but I LOVE the prism hot boxes. I'm a sucker for serial numbered cards.

I love case hit cards (and Inserts, especially 90s Inserts) too but the astronomical prices for a lot of them with people overestimating their rarity/scarcity has made it tough for me to target them so I've usually just opted for serial numbered cards of great players instead. The few exceptions were completing a Kobe Insert Set for $7.50 each: 1998 Collector's Edge Impulse KB8 Holofoil 5 Card Set (Inserted 1:90 Packs) and picking up a 2003-04 Fleer Traditions Milestones Insert of Kobe for $12.50 (Inserted 1:144 Packs, 10 Card Set, Case Hit).

While I'm not a big set collector/completionist, I did get the majority of the 1996 Topps Classic Confrontation cards (all the HOFers/Should be HOFers. Found only in Wal-Mart exclusive 5 Card Retail Packs) and it looks pretty cool together in a binder. Same for a 2000 Upper Deck Cooperstown Calling Insert set (Inserted 1:23 Series 2 Packs) so again, not an easy pull to get the majority of them but doable when targeting just the singles.

That Yelich was a little of both. A friend got it in a break and then sold it to me. Still not really sure how rare the blackout cards are but they look good. I like the Yelich especially.

Checking the BGS pop report this morning, four 2008 National Treasures Marques Colston cards have popped since yesterday, unremarkable if I had sent 4 in one submission, but I didn't. I sent 1 each across multiple submissions. I'm sifting through my records and running other cards from other submissions through the pop report (complicating the expediency is the CAPTCHA) and can only piece 2 full subs from 2020 that are in the population report. So it's possible they were still grading stuff as I was searching. Brass tacks, I cannot afford for my Facebook guy to hit me with another 9 submissions ready at once message. The point of mailing once per week in 2020 remains the same, returns once per week when they're done. Did I majorly, royally screw up? Yeah, I did, and now as a consequence I had to message the group organizer and tell him what I found in the pop report and that until January 12 rolls around, I'm unable to pay him for more than what I originally budgeted, I'm still robbing Peter to pay Paul for the 90+ cards earlier in the fall. On January 12, work has to cut me a check for 204 hours of unused 2021 vacation time. I will be able to satisfy my debt with him by then. He was AMAZINGLY laid back in his response, did not even once point out my shortsightedness and how much it could potentially tie up HIS payment method on file with BGS, just requested full communication at all times. I offered a sign of good faith of $100 from each of my next two checks if a large return is about to happen but he didn't indicate to accept or reject that idea. Just keep him in the loop and we'll chat as he gets stuff from BGS.

Since that conversation, I sold a graded 1993 Magic the Gathering card (BGS 7.5) for $90 on Myslabs (retained $81 after fees and shipping) and still have a bud to meet up with this week for a $100 sale. I also am hoping some of the Facebook marketplace stuff heats up in the next 9 days with Christmas looming.

I am still dedicating Wednesday and Thursday to delivering packs of cards to 30 or so families in the neighborhood as stocking stuffers with ZERO intent to mention neither my marketplace listings, ebay, nor myslabs. IF they happen to ask, I'll provide the information but I am sticking to my guns on my original intent of this project, regardless of what's going on in my own situation.

Incidentally, my Facebook guy had these pop this week and are enroute to my mailbox, ETA tomorrow or Thursday. All are going on local marketplace. The Smoltz will most likely catch the attention of a few high school buds. The Ian Book rookie cards will definitely get the attention of prospectors even in CSG 8 condition. I don't know how well the rookie linemen autos are going to do but I'll see what messages I get. The rest are GPK and going in the GPK Facebook sales group.

OH and the BAS Brees is PC, a gift from many years ago that I finally slabbed. I sent it in either May or June 2020 and they finally finished it (adding to my dismay at Beckett inconsistencies).

Apparently, there was a sportscardinvestor_fraud IG that got deleted but it was posting about Geoff Wilson's losses. Geoff's been threatening to sue people for libel when people are (rightly) commenting about the money he's paid cards and then discussing in videos after the fact about selling, etc. He also outright told one person to stop falsely claiming he charges for investment advice and his articles specifically talk about cards trending up, etc. but are all worded in such a fashion as to not really promote "investing" in them with the written text at the bottom that they are purchases and not sold until at least 30 days later. Very legalese bullshit pump & dump tactics that can't be "proven" in court as such but have all the trademarks to them.

Geoff seems to believe that he's never "pumped & dumped" (maybe he legit doesn't think it's illegal because there's no regulation?) and that he's never scammed anybody. RunGoodLife called out his infamous Select Boxes video + the videos calling Select the safe investment and accused Geoff of selling them off (which I don't think he did tbh) with Geoff going, "Yeah. You think I did, huh? Prove it or I'll sue!"

Geoff comes off as a good guy who wants to do right in the hobby but he's viewing himself like the next GaryVee. It doesn't help that he has a very... Vince McMahon Charlatan Snake Oil salesman vibe to him in general because he's in this hobby to make money despite what he says about collecting, etc., he came in just as the pandemic boom started & very smartly created the technology to financially benefit from it, but he tries to frame himself as just one of the guys in the hobby and smarter than he really is about the hobby itself because he has the $$ to buy up high end cards.

The Market Movers tool is great but also very limited in the types of players it features. It's pretty blatant when they get a Hobby Box/open it because you'll see a flood of like 2021 Topps Heritage Real One Autos of no-namers and yet they can't do a 2003 Upper Deck Annika Sorenstam RC or add a Brett Hull RC, Mike Richter RC, Martin Brodeur RC, Dominik Hasek RC, etc. Not like those players were hacks or scrubs either.

It feels more like "we need a tool to track our investments" than an actual "this is a tool for the hobby focused on as many cards as we can put in" type thing.

Just wanted to throw out an early Merry Xmas/Happy Holidays to you guys in this thread. Hope 2022 is better/as fun/more fun in the card collecting market. I'll be throwing up some of my Maddux/Glavine cards on IG later. Wanted to particularly thank @snuffbox and @SFH for making this thread an enjoying read throughout 2021 :)

Thanks and you too! Hopefully 2022 will be the best year for all of us.

Thanks for sharing all of your very well thought out insights in how you approach collecting from both the fun part and the investment side.

I had ran a 45% off sale on Facebook marketplace (mostly sports cards) and was able to move a few things. BUT the platform got really buggy when converting 45% off the asking price and also involving the "minimum offer price" that was in place when item was initially listed. An item that was $26 originally I had marked down to $14.30. I did not adjust the minimum offer price of "$14" but a not bot/scam account started demanding to know why I cancelled his $10 order. Was sending me screen grabs after I told him I didn't even get an offer from him (I got an email much later). I finally told him, "It's marked down from $26 to $14.30 already, I'm not going down to $10." I decided to turn offers off on that listing when he figured a way to force through a $10 offer. I saw that the 45% off thing ended on the 26th and I really didn't want to spend tomorrow fielding messages, so I cancelled the 45% off special and just reactivated the minimum offer thing, and set it to $14 for that specific item. Dude is now sending snarky messages about "good luck getting $26 for this, he's not even that good of a player." Had he just sent me $14 offer from the start we wouldn't be an hour in to this interaction.

I'm also butthurt at myself for not realizing that knocked 45% off my asking price on a $100 2x McFarlane rookie figure listing of Ben Roethlisberger (one was the variant). I know $100 is unrealistic, but the idea is to get offers in. Someone was able to take advantage of my oversight, and I'm not going through the drama of cancelling, seller's remorse, and putting bad customer service on my profile. All on me.

After I package up the two figures, I'll be placing my prewar tobacco cards into the Ultra Pro tobacco card binder pages I bought. That collection got out of hand entirely too fast.

I love stuff like that... it's like, "Uh... then why did you make an offer of $10 for that card?!? Clearly, you think that player's worthwhile if you are targeting him."

Wanted to run a 50% off special on my graded vintage listings, somehow the same card as above got checked off and wound up being listed at some really low price. I caught it and just changed the price to $100 with the intent to revisit it later in the evening. Two minutes after changing the price the same guy is hitting my DMs "$100? Give me a fucking break! LOL!" So I guess he had alerts turned on for that listing. I blocked him.

Picked up a 1957 Topps Norm Van Brocklin in an SGC 7 grade for $40 (looks nicely centered and a little top-heavy on the back) off of eBay. Was looking at baseball but I'm so paranoid of "trimmers" and it's harder for me to judge that I played it safe and went for a guy I'd been eyeing since March at a great grade & price. A PSA 7, with slightly worse centering on the front, was being offered at $70 or BO.

I also figure that NVB will retain his value as long as he holds the single-game career passing yard mark. Won 2 NFL Championships, Threw for over 2,000 yards 7 times in the 12 game era(!), and had a near 1:1 TD to INT ratio for his career. Also had a career 42.9 YPP average back when QBs would also punt.

I am having a lot of emotions that I would categorize all of them as negative, annoyed, stressed, flustered, and still trying to find a solution. For Christmas, as I already posted, I combined a collection I purchased with a major clean out of my own collection and distributed them among the neighborhood to any family that responded to a Facebook group post for neighborhood watch. No biggie. Some families wanted multiple packs and once I had a number of kids I made that many piles, estimated at least 75-100 cards per pile. I was adamant that either the parents take credit or give credit to "Santa." Due to my social awkwardness, while I like to do nice things, I also don't like weird public interactions. So don't tell the kids the weird bald dude with a beard handed them out. The response was so positive. AND I was able to zero out all unnecessary cards in my existing collection.

Today, New Years Day, I get a message from one of the moms that her other kids were jealous they didn't get any cards for Christmas, do I have any more packs (two) for her other two kids. A week after Christmas. I DID have extras and I gave them all to my coworker's kid. And while I'm miffed she waited over a week to hit me up for more, I'm still trying to mentally go through my collection (busy weekend I can't get to my collection right now) to see if I can come up with 200 Saints cards to split between two kids to be fair. Pretty much approaching it as I don't want these kids to miss out b/c Mom is a flake.

Just venting. I'm going to hit up a few Saints groups to see what I can dig up. Might refer her to the card shop. Anything else I have on hand would be my inventory for sale or the stuff I'm not moving.

Glad it got a positive reaction :) Also not at all surprising that kids got butthurt over not getting anything (no kid likes feeling left out/missing the cool thing) with the Mom contacting you well after the fact. Truth be told, the Mom should've either had her kid split up their cards to the siblings (like my parents would've made me do for my sister) or told you at the time, "I have 3 kids," just in case that scenario rose up.

I'd say go through what you have but don't feel forced to do 200 on the number. If you can only do 10 per or 25 per or 50 per kid, do that and just let the Mom know, "Sorry but it's all I had left." Either she's grateful you even bothered with that much & understands or she can go pay $60 out of her own pocket at a Target/Wal-Mart and get a pack of cards herself.

Working on my "vintage" baseball names in very low serial numbered cards so I snagged the following Timeless Tributes Gold from the 2014 Classics set all serial numbered /25 (I'm a sucker for the Classics brand) for around $5 each. Molitor, Campy, and Gibson were $6 each.

I spent $77 on these 15 Cards, again all serial numbered /25. 2 Hobby Boxes sold for $270 in December on eBay(!) I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be getting 15 Cards #'d /25 in a single Hobby Box, especially the majority being Hall of Famers or All-Time Legends. Also, this means whatever packs are unopened in the world, there's just 24 available of the below players to pull.

#10 Bill Dickey
#23 Carlton Fisk
#54 George Sisler
#58 Hack Wilson
#73 Joe Medwick
#80 Josh Gibson
#99 Nap Lajoie
#104 Paul Molitor
#108 Phil Rizzuto
#119 Roy Campanella
#122 Sam Crawford
#126 Steve Carlton
#132 Tom Seaver
#141 Warren Spahn
#142 Whitey Ford
