Rise Of Skywalker is third worse, but it just looks nicer than the first two prequels. I think maybe better acting overall as well. It still sucks.

Phantom Menace at least feels like it knows what it's trying to do, Lucas gimmick-barf notwithstanding. I'm doing a rewatch next week, so maybe I'll feel different. But you're right, Rise Of Skywalker doesn't look like garbage. Maybe it comes down to Palpatine either way.

I put the Disney Plus Lego Star Wars Holiday Special that got released this year on tonight. They actually made some funny jokes about the prequel and new trilogies that were made me laugh and surprised me they were willing to do like
Phantom Menace Obi-Wan banging his head on a table yelling about how boring political hearings were and how he wanted action

I can appreciate so much of the prequel casts now that I can't wait to be let down all over again.

Rise of Skywalker was nothing but corporate boardroom storytelling and trying desperately to please neckbeards and Buzzfeed writers alike without putting forth the right effort to make any of it work. It so wanted to be liked that it pitifully ran from A to B to A to Q and never let itself breathe.

Rewatching A New Hope, it's been quite a while. It's trippy seeing R2D2 and C3P0 in this setting after seeing them go out on adventures in the Clone Wars series.

I'd forgotten how much I liked C3P0 in the original series, he does a lot in that first half an hour.

I am not looking forward to watching AOTC later this weekend but I set out on watching all these movies dammit. At least, Phantom Menace had a cool lightsaber battle and occasional fleeting moments of fun, dumb energy.

AOTC has ass kicking Yoda (but it is the annoying CGI Yoda) and someone trying to sell Obi Wan Kenobi space cocaine?

Yoda and Palpatine having an ECW brawl and throwing chairs at each other is one of the best moments of the prequels. I can't remember if it was in Clones or Sith.

In regards to Rise of Skywalker Vs first two prequels. Rise of Skywalker was better acted and had stronger characters (even if they were used piss poorly in it) but first two prequels at least had an original POV and were going for something other than "trying to please everyone". I would rank Rise of Skywalker above I-II but it's definitely, easily in Bottom 3 with them IMO.

The "trying to please everyone" aspect is what's hanging me up most. Phantom Menace is awful but it had a direction and was consistent. I'm curious how rose-colored my vision of Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor's performances are vs Rise Of Skywalker, though. Bias way in their favor at the moment because Rise Of Skywalker destroyed my bro Finn.

Because I am me....Liam Neeson's hair and energy reminded me of '99 era Kevin Nash. He was also similar to Nash in '99 WCW, in that sense even though he was clearly not trying or very good, he was one of the coolest of the movie.

One of my big takeways of the movie was how much smaller of a part Ewan McGregor has than I remembered.I would say Obi Wan barely constitutes as a supporting role and he just seems like a total lackey to Qui Gon Jinn until last 10-15 minutes or so of movie.

Edit---now that I think about it. I think Nash had a similar haircut to Qui Gon in '96-'97 era not '99----was George Lucas a WCW Fan???

Iirc, Ewan's Kenobi is really good in Revenge Of The Sith and Attack Of The Clones despite having to say the phrase "younglings" in a serious tone. He's good in Menace, but it's the QUI GOD JINN show.

Yeah I always considered Liam Neeson to be the bare minimum performance but still the coolest guy in the movie. Qui Gon is in so many ways the ultimate Jedi character to me: boring personality and by the book, but kicked ass. When I first saw it I really wanted him to be a recurring character in the next movie at least but yeah.

McGregor I remember as just asking Qui Gon questions and getting huffy about answers, but he did it well.

Hayden Christianson isn’t completely incapable. I remember digging his performance in the movie Shattered Glass back in the day.

It isn't him as much as it's really out of place. Dude was a James Earl Jones dark side Cyberman last we saw him, so what's left for Anakin to do?

I haven't looked into this at all so if it is between the prequel and original trilogy, I would assume he is probably going to be in some flashbacks or something, to maximize the fact they actually got him working again.

I wonder if this is just make up to him after the word had gotten out he had made some drafts of The Last Skywalker in a cameo that got nixed.

I think it's worth mentioning that RotS was the only prequel film I watched in theaters. I saw Phantom Menace and AotC on TV after their theatrical runs so I wasn't caught up in the hype as much. Only good thing I can say about PM was that the pod racing N64 game was pretty cool back in the day!

i will always remember the feeling of walking out of the theater after phantom, how crushed i was and even more my younger brother was. all the years of waiting for THAT. That's why it is my most hated SW movie. After that it doesn;t matter of Clones actually had worse performances or anything else, the imprint of that letdown is always there.

RotS is totally fine by me because it gets better the longer it goes. McGregor and Anakin killing younglings and Order 66 are the peak of the trilogy and really cathartic given all the shit they'd done. It should have been the second movie and a third establishing Vader Time.

Clones made Christopher Lee boring and that's a fucking sin. That final battle was a HUGE missed opportunity for some iconic moments, too. Movie overall is a below average toy commercial.

I remember Jason Mantzoukas telling a story about how he cried after Phantom Menace while on a date.

I watched Episode II last night and I got to admit @Winter Epicland was actually right. It is a moderate improvement over Episode I. I could probably even be convinced it may be better than Episode IX? Definitely still in the bottom 3 but not definitive worst. There are some cool action sequences, Christopher Lee, and more Ewan McGregor and less racist accents. I can see why some people talked themselves this into being a lot better. It's like George Lucas realized after Episode I, that Star Wars isn't just for kids.

Also space cocaine and space diners. ANYONE WANNA CUP OF JAWA JUICE!?
