Yeah, I ended up picking up each individual season on Blu-Ray. The video quality's pretty good for a show whose artwork isn't the most detailed/best. I'll probably re-start Season 2 (having recently finished S1 and not seen it since I started watching Anime) and try to move onto Season 3 while knowing very little about that one in general.
Up through 7 eps of Princess Principal now. Enjoying the Steampunk environment/feel and the characters are fairly solid. Also have Season 3 of Food Wars! starting and Season 2 of Love! Live! Sunshine! so I got some shows coming down the pike finally.
Still gotta marathon my way through the rest of My Hero Academia at some point too.
Watching this season (as well as dbz super) so far:
Black Clover: The main dude yells way too much but this has potential to be a fun show. Both guys are orphans and want to be the wizard king in a world where everyone has magic powers and gets their magic book at 15. One of the two doesn't seem to have powers though and has trained to be physically strong whereas the other is a prodigy. the prodigy gets the super rare 4 leaf clover book but the nonmagicker gets a 5 leaf clover book because of course. Shoneny stuff but the first two episodes were decent stuff. As long as the yelling and screaming get toned down a bit I'll stick with it.
Evil or Live: This is some weird ass shit. a prison school/camp for teens who are addicted to the internet and have lost their grip on reality. I don't know if I'll stick with this but depending on how it's played it could be good.
Fate/Apocrypha : Now that they've finally started actually fighting this is better but still super slow.
Garo: Vanishing Line: The first Garo show I've watched which is odd since it's a major franchise in Japan. Only seen the first episode so no real judgment yet.
Gintama.: Porori-hen: I love Gintama. I think this is just a filler arc before they get back to the major arcs wrapping up the series but any Gintama is good!
Inuyashiki: I think this is the most interesting looking show of the season for me. An old man and a young guy are both killed under mysterious circumstances and brought back as cyborgs/androids. The old man uses his new found abilities to help people in various ways and finally feel useful and fulfilled in his life. The young guy becomes a horrific unstoppable serial killer.
Juuni Taisen: Feels like a way more violent fate/stay ripoff in some ways. I'm ok with that though.
Kekkai Sensen & Beyond: Second season of what was a pretty good show that ended up suffering from a gigantic delay before it's final episode aired. I really like the music and design of this.
Enjoying the new seasons of Food Wars! (Season 3) and Love! Live! Sunshine! (Season 2). Finished up the series Princess Principal and enjoyed it quite a bit, very steampunk detective style and I friggin' adore the OP. Probably my favorite OP in a long while. Also the episode scoring was fantastic, something I usually don't notice as much in Anime but it was really distinct in PP and in a great way.
And with chapter 196, Jitsu wa Watashi wa by Masuda Eiji has come to an end. I'm sad that the series came to an end, but at least it went out just the way it should. Unlike a lot of series I liked that ended poorly.
Ancient Magus' Bride: Solid. Artwork is distinctive and the plot seems to quietly be starting to come together a bit. Black Butler: Just started this up. Had seen the Manga covers and heard great things about the anime (from CWM & others). Food Wars! Season 3: You know what you're getting by this point. Hasn't quite kicked into high gear yet for me though. Love Live! Sunshine!! Season 2: Is what it is thus far. The main plot related to the school I'm not feeling and not doing the show many favors but I like the characters enough to keep going. New Game: Very enjoyable series. Something I had not heard of but looked neat. A girl joins a game development company and learns she's helping design the 3rd in the series of her favorite game ever. The characters/interactions help hold this one up for me.
I've never talked about Black Butler because I've never watched it. How do I get credit for an anime that I've never watched and not for the dozens of others over the years??!
I watched Beyond The Boundary which is a couple years old but was pretty good. Also finally watched the second season of When They Cry. Really enjoyed it but the first season is better (insert bewilderment at HQ watching the second season first and not realizing).
So of the shows/movies I finished this year these would be how I'd roughly rank them:
Kimi no Na wa. 10 Movie
Gintama. 10
Boku no Hero Academia 2nd Season 8
Shingeki no Kyojin Season 2 8
Berserk 2nd Season 8
Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2 8
Made in Abyss 8
Classroom of the Elite 8
Gabriel DropOut 8
Akiba's Trip The Animation 8
Gamers! 7
Sword Oratoria: Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? On the Side 7
Ao no Exorcist: Kyoto Fujouou-hen 7
Fate/Grand Order: First Order 7 (movie)
Saga of Tanya the Evil 6
ChäoS;Child 6
Quanzhi Gaoshou 6
Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu 5
I go pretty easy on ratings. Everything under a 7 there I wouldn't watch again but all the 7's and up I liked but some of them had some kind of flaw or are the kind of show it's impossible to rate much higher. This felt like a lesser year for shows especially since almost all of the best stuff were continuations.
Of the shows still running I'm watching and would give tentative ratings of:
Dragon Ball Super 8 (the early arcs redoing the movies hurt it but the latest stuff is fantastic)
Dies Irae 4 (I want to drop it but I can't look away)
Kekkai Sensen & Beyond 6 (first season was a ton better)
Inuyashiki 8
Black Clover 8
Fate/Apocrypha 4 (how to make a fate show with double the fighters and a quarter the action)
Juuni Taisen 7
Gintama.: Porori-hen (only watched the first episode so far so no rating but it's gintama so it'll be great)
Garo: Vanishing Line 7
Evil or Live 6
I can't remember all the stuff I dropped so I wan't rate them but I know I dropped that Magus's Bride show. Way too creepy for me bro. Dude rescues a little girl and is giving her a naked bath and shit and then is like YOU GONNA MARRY ME. What kind of Ray Moore shit is that? No Thanks.
I've never talked about Black Butler because I've never watched it. How do I get credit for an anime that I've never watched and not for the dozens of others over the years??!
just watched the Fairy Tail Movie 2 Dragon Cry which came out in theaters in May and I guess is on dvd in Japan at least now. Not amazing but a fun movie, better than the first FT movie and wets your whistle for the next season which should be coming in 2018.
CWM and I have both seen the Fairy Tail Movie 2: Dragon Cry in the last few days. The subtitles were... something else, which may have had an effect but I gave it a 6/10, same for the Fairy Tail x Rave OVA. It was alright but felt a little rushed and not developed enough (especially the bad guys), almost one of those 2 Eps in the series just mashed together.
Picked up the following on Blu-Ray from RightStuf (great site if you've never checked them out). Sales were a lot cheaper than sites like Amazon.com as well
Angel Beats! for $34.98 (from $69.98) - Was OOP at Amazon.com and my impetus for this purchase really D-Frag (SAVE Edition) for $15.44 (from $29.98) vs. $20.69 at Amazon The Devil Is a Part-Timer (Anime Classics) for $23.16 (from $44.98) vs. $26.99 at Amazon FLCL (Anime Classics) for $20.24 (from $44.98) vs. $24.44 at Amazon
Total = $93.82
If Amazon = $147.12 (since Angel Beats! is OOP and the 'New' is $75.00)
I've never been much of an anime fan. I've seen a few that I really liked, Vampire Hunter D, Ghost In The Shell, and a couple others. My wife got me Cowboy Bebop the show and movie on Blu-Ray for Christmas. I watched the first 4 episodes last night, and I'm totally hooked. It's so damn great.

Finished the following, finally. Food Wars! Season 3 - Good but it felt more like 1/2 a season as it came off as largely setting up Season 4. Not as entertaining as prior seasons but it knows what it does well and sticks to it for the most part. Love Live! Sunshine!! Season 2 - Solid stuff. Have a feeling this was it for the series though. New Game!! Season 2 - Really fun. The concept is fine but the characters are adorable and just unique enough to be entertaining with one another. Was a good step forward from Season 1 and I'm curious how far they can push some of the arcs/development of the characters.
Gonna be starting up Citrus as the 1st episode's dropped (because duh) and Dagashi Kashi Season 2 (dropping in two days I think) because Hotaru is so, so much fun.
aside from the "for real this time we promise" final arc of Gintama not much this season is really popping out so far. Kokkoku and Overlord II are the ones I'm most interested in. I watched Devilman Crybaby and it was trippy as fuck.
Violet Evergreen seems quite nice. Subtle undertones, nice broken warrior without a war and Kyoto Animation. Will likely start out slow and build to a violent ending.
Watched the Godzilla movie that's on Netflix and it's pretty fun although it kind of feels like it drops you into a series that's been going on for awhile.
Watched Rakuen Tsuiho: Expelled From Paradise and scored it a 7/10. Good design, solid overall but felt a bit lacking at times and the end devolved into a gigantic gun battle which almost felt out of place given the rest of the film.
Plot: Humanity gets mostly wiped out and 98% of humans (memories residing in virtual beings) hide out in a virtual world named DEVA. Angela Balzac, a security agent later assisted by a fellow agent named Dingo, ends up chasing a hacker named 'Frontier Setter' onto Earth after FS keeps infiltrating DEVA with messages to the populace about joining him/her on a space vessel to explore space.
Angela does have one of the cooler costume designs I've seen, however.
For those wondering, Fate/Extra Last Encore! For those worried that you need to know anything about the Fate/ Multi-Universe, you don't. New timeline! So you don't need to worry about that.
However, for those who know nothing about the terminology, you are going to get just thrown in the deep end. It seems that Nasu (creator) and Shaft (studio) are keeping with the theme of throwing you in the deep end and being as confused about everything as can possibly be. Magibabble and Trekbabble are going to be hitting you like a ton of bricks, but that's okay because it looks like they will explain things. Though you are going to be confused. Unless they absolutely fuck this up, it is as intended. The more you get to know our lead, Hakuno, the more you'll understand why it is done like that.
BTW, for those wondering "hey, is this Saber the same as Saber in Fate/Stay Night", no. She's also not like an older Red Saber from Fate/Aprocrophya. Though this Extra's Saber could definitely be the older relative of Saber's Fate/Stay Night by about 500 years. If you are wondering how the hell that works, I'll explain, but in a spoiler. Only look if you want to be spoiled! Though the show should quickly explain who this Saber is. She doesn't exactly try hiding who she is. She's a little too proud of that.
In real life King Arthur has been thought of possibly being a Roman General. Therefore, if you look back by 500, from the last 5th century to roughly 50 A.D. and the Roman Empire, you can guess who I'm saying Fate/Stay Night's Altira/Arthur is related to.
Fate/Extra's Saber is Nero Claudius.
Also, she's more of a tragic heroine than in our timeline. Though then again, you can practically say that of all the people in Fate/ Multi-Universe get shafted in some sort of way or another. Furthermore it becomes a running gag that a ton of Sabers look like Altira.
Dumped Ancient Magus' Bride after the 10th episode. Wasn't doing a ton for me and it was giving me greater 'Fifty Shades' vibes with each passing episode.
So, in its place I started up Sora yori mo Tooi Basho (A Place Further Than the Universe) about four high schoolers who prepare to travel to Antarctica. What makes this show so great (currently a 9/10 for me) is that beyond the GORGEOUS animation and rounded characters, the group aren't super duper best friends. The "leader" (Shirase) is somebody who lost their Mom to an expedition there and has long vowed to go to find her. The protagonist of the show (Kimari) wants to accomplish something and sees this as her way to do an unplanned journey somewhere. A co-worker she befriended (Hinata) is somebody who joined up thanks to Kimari's enthusiasm and the final girl is Yuzuki, a celebrity reporter who was assigned to go to Antarctica in the first place.
Again, the artwork is gorgeous and the characters all are vastly different with unique high points, flaws, and tics yet seen together one can see why they could work as a group (bonus being they can see how each character can rub another the wrong way too). Very few shows can pull that off, especially with a realistic plot concept as this has going for it.
I don't really like how this Fate show just throws you in on the deep end and also just throws a bunch of science babble at you that is clearly bullshit. It's easier when you just say IT'S MAGIC OK?! Was it so hard for it to just be a bunch of heroes fighting each other to the death with insane power ups? That was FUN. The series peaked with Unlimited Blade Works for me.
Watching this season:
Beatless: Only watched the first episode of this so far and it looks like robot/cyborg girl found by teenager with MYSTERY thing. might be ok.
Black Clover: This has continued to build the fairy tail vibe more and more and I'm enjoying it.
Darling IN the FanXX: This is by the Kill La Kill guys but it isn't anywhere near as good and the way they pilot the mechs feels less like a parody/joke and more like outright creeper shit which wasn't the vibe i got with their previous work.
Dragon Ball Super: The universal saga has been balls out awesome.
Fate/Extra Last Encore: see the top.
Garo Vanishing Line: This has been decent but not great. I'd give more Garo stuff a try.
Gintama Silver Soul: Exactly what I wanted in the wrapup of the series.
Gancrest Senki: Seems sort of like a Holy Roman Empire setting with the dude wandering around conquering territories and gathering followers. pretty fun.
Hakata Tokotsu Ramens: A city full of assassins. Why would anyone live there? I don't know. Only watched two episodes and not really impressed so far.
Hitori No Shita 2nd: They're doing a tournament arc this season and it hasn't done a lot for me so far but there's enough in it I've liked.
Kokkoku: Aside from Gintama this is the best of the season. really fun idea with a stone that has the power to send people into "stasis" where everyone else in the world is frozen in time and there are mysterious entities that patrol etc.
Overlord II: I liked the first season more but this has been decent.
I've also been watching Bakemonogatari which I really like and I watched Kakegurui because it got put up on netflix and thought it was pretty hilarious. The overthetop orgasm faces for gambling all the time and everyone else freaking out and the insane games were good times and they kept a good pace.
Finished up Blame! The Movie (2017) on Netflix and it was good. Very well directed by Hiroyuki Seshita and great animation. 8/10
Seshita has also directed AJIN, Godzilla: Planet of Monsters, and was AD on Knights of Sidonia.
Basically humanity has lost access to controls and the defense system, Safeguard, is hunting a group of survivors called Electro-Fishers. A group of young teens steal suits in order to go out to find food. They come upon a human (Killy) trying to find another human with a specific Net gene to restore humanity's power over the controls, setting off the plot.
The Exterminators were creepy as hell and very nightmare fuel inducing. My skin crawls just picturing them. I did read that they changed some stuff e.g. shifting the focus of the protagonists more to the Electro-Fishers from the human (Killy) which worked for me as well as creating several characters for the movie such as Tae.
I admittedly know nothing about the Manga/7 Episode anime from 2003 so I can't speak much for anything else but this was really well directed and animated. Recommended if you're looking for a newer anime movie and browsing Netflix.
Watched the No Game, No Life movie, Zero. Very captivating story, nice usage of re-casting characters (not the actors, but the characters) and pretty much explains how the world of NGNL came to be and what the Great War was all about. It also unfortunately seems like the very last animation we'll get of NGNL, but damn that's a way to go out with a bang.
