Further proof that animated movies are easy money makers when pulled off right and marketed well to children.

Worth pointing out that movies 1-3,5 and 6 didn't cost a whole lot to make (Dog Man" actually cost $40 million). Not a big week. Next week is "Captain America: Brave New World", "Paddington in Peru" and the 14th-16th is Fathom Events showing of "Harry Potter" movies. The week after is "The Monkey" (really wanna see this one)

Dogman is doing terribly overseas, so there's a chance it doesn't break even if it keeps having huge drops in America.

It's opening in the UK this weekend so that should give it a decent boost but it was always going to be reliant more on the domestic gross.

"Captain America" made 2 million less than expected, but it's still the biggest opening of the year thus far. Goddamn "Heart Eyes" has legs.

Dog Man held up pretty strongly too considering its opening last week. I was worried there'd be a steeper dropoff.

Ouch for "Brave New World", as that's a pretty big drop. That being said, I do enjoy seeing Zachary Levi continuing to fail. "Heart Eyes" took a pretty big drop, bit I expected that would happen after Valentine's Day weekend.

Next week is "Last Breath" and anime in "Mobil Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX: The Beginning". March starts off with "Mickey 17" (which isn't tracking very well), "In the Lost Lands" (new Paul WS Anderson movie) and "Queen of the Ring". March 14th brings "Black Bag" and "Novocain". March 21st is "Snow White".

I had a feeling "Mickey 17" would underperform, though "The Monkey", "Paddington" and "The Monkey" have legs and "Anora" got the expected post Oscars bump. "In the Lost Lands" is both the weakest debut for a Paul WS Anderson movie ("Monster Hunter" didn't make much money either, but it debuted during the pandemic so I don't know if it counts) and the first one since his debut "Shopping" to not be released by a big studio. Next week is "Novacaine", "Opus" and "Black Bag". The week after is "Snow White" (which looks awful IMO)

Dog Man is at 3x its budget, should make far more in the ancillary side after the fact. Pretty solid considering the flatter last few weeks and its reliance largely on the domestic ($88 Mill vs $31 International IIRC).

The Monkey is already impressively at 4X and could make a shot at 5X.

I knew Queen of the Ring didn't do well (my fiancee and I were the only two in our showing on Friday night) but under a million?

I've known it was coming out for months, and I was even intrigued, but I only go to the theater for MCU movies.

Gonna be an interesting weekend re: the new release slate. Novocaine is tracking for around $10-$14 Million, Black Bag has a good cast (Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender, Pierce Brosnan) & plot which could cater to older moviegoers, and The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie could capture the kid demographic leading into St. Patrick's Day on Monday. Worth noting that LT: Back in Action released in 2003 made the equivalent of $16 Million in its opening weekend, I doubt this LT movie hits that mark but it wouldn't surprise me if it ends up around $10 Million.

The Looney Tunes one is actually a pick up-Warner Bros (by that I mean David Zaslav) wanted nothing to do with it, so a studio called Ketchup Entertainment has ended up releasing it. I don't see it doing well either, as there has been almost zero promotion for it.

On one hand, I want the theater industry to continue (even though it's looking more and more unrealistic). On the other hand, I really want this movie to bomb. Not because of the actors or controversy or whatever (let's be real, most audiences don't give a shit). I just think it looks terrible, and I find remaking already gorgeous looking animated movies into hideous looking CG slop to be nostalgia baiting at it's worst.

I think the rise in costs on everything + the tariff concerns are making movies the "first expendable" as far as costs for most people (see takeout, etc.). Throw in that there really aren't any major, worthwhile movies being released until maybe Snow White or Thunderbolts* on May 2nd, and Final Destination: Bloodlines May 16th (I'm including this because these movies tend to do well overall).

Also not helping are all of these movies jacking up their budgets with re-shoots and catering to foreign markets like China to "make money" vs. domestic so their odds of literally profiteering off the lower movie-theater going base is far dwindling.

No offense, but the "worthwhile" probably should be rephrased. There's other movies soon to come that'll be great. The problem is that outside of horror, the only thing people care about now are things based on well known IPs. There was a time where a film like "Black Bag", something made with among other things, adults in mind would do some decent to good box office. Now it feels like nobody cares and they only wanna watch blockbusters based on well known properties. If that's the only kind of thing someone wants to watch...well, that's just sad IMO.

I meant worthwhile more in the blockbuster/may draw butts in seats scenario but point taken, I should've used better wording. I feel like certain niches have survived (horror, kids animated movies) but even the teasers don't "draw" people the same way. All the teasers for movies I see on TV are literally: Scenes from Movie that look cool/interesting, ROTTEN TOMATOES 98% FRESH! or "GROUNDBREAKING VISUAL DELIGHT" - CinemaWire type text to where I don't even know the director or who the actors are in it unless I know them by sight.

I know my parents now are very welcome to "wait" for something to hit streaming or even just pay the $5.99 rental on say Prime if they are desperate to see anything rather than physically go out to the theater.

Jesus, that is a bad week, and "Novacaine" did worse than expected. We'll see if "Snow White" does well enough (it's projected to make $45-50 million next week.)
Final numbers minimally helped as Novocaine came in at $8.809 and Black Bag came in at $7.607 while Mickey 17 came in slightly lower at $7.435. The Day the Earth Blew Up came in at $3.158 and The Last Supper was $2.777.

The budget for Snow White is reportedly 270 million dollars and it's tracking for an opening in the range of 45-55 million.

Holy shit, those awful looking CGI Seven Dwarves must of cost a ton.

That Snow White movie got so much heat for not using actual dwarf actors and it might have been cheaper to actually do that

I understand what Peter Dinklage was saying, but as a person teetering on the size of a dwarf, it felt like he cost a lot of actors jobs. He's established at this point and and has the career most dwarfs would dream of. An unknown could've broken out with one of the Seven Dwarf roles and possibly be another little person actor that has success besides Peter Dinklage. A modern Dopey could of been huge in this world full of Dopeys.

Casting seven distinct dwarf characters/actors would've been the best choice. I'd be down for a remake of Herzog's Even Dwarfs Started Small.
