Mufasa opened on Friday to a pretty disappointing $13.3 Million whereas Sonic 3 had a more solid $25.75 Million. The 2019 Lion King's Friday was $77.3 Million for comparison's sake and even The Little Mermaid did 3X ($38 Million).

Sonic 3 was right in-line with Sonic 2 ($26.38 Million) and Sonic ($20.92 Million).

If "Snow White" and "Lilo and Stitch" bomb (hopefully they will), then Disney is going to have to either stop making these live action remakes or just put them direct to streaming. Who the hell was asking for a prequel to the live action "Lion King", even if it's from Barry Jenkins?

Lion King cost 200 million so yikes. Unless it has Christmas legs like Puss In Boots had a few years ago. But, I doubt it will, because it has direct competition with Sonic. As well as Wicked and Moana 2 for other family films.

I can see it doing poorly in domestic but much better globally so that the final numbers look decent enough.

I was wrong and Mustafa is showing big legs and passed Sonic, which has surprisingly not been holding that well and seems fan driven. Nosferatu opened surprisingly big too which is fantastic. The Chalamet Dylan biopic opened decently too. Yesterday had 10 movies make over a million dollars, so the cinema is definitely alive and well after a scary few years.

People were talking about Mufasa beating out Sonic 3 during Christmas but it looks like Sonic 3's regained the edge a little going into this weekend (while being in about 300+ fewer theaters yet making more per theater).

On Friday, Sonic did $600K more and Saturday saw $300K more. Sunday's estimates have it tied but I can see Sonic ending up with $100-$200K more too.

This weekend will also see a massive global release of Sonic 3 so it'll be interesting to see its overall box office on Tuesday.

Also Nosferatu seems likely to gross around 100 million domestic which is huge for Horror and Robert Eggers. It already is his highest grossing movie in week 1.

Of note: "The Brutalist" has made over a million in just eight theaters, there was an anniversary screening of "Se7en" that made $915,000, and lol "Kraven the Hunter" has only made $23,700,000 in the US.

Next week is the beginning of the dump months period, with "Den of Thieves 2" and "Better Man" (that Robbie Williams documentary with him as a monkey that's actually getting good reviews). The week after is "Wolf Man", "One of Them Days" and a rerelease of "Sing Sing"

Good to see more people want to see Gerard Butler as a violent slab of meat (seriously, dedicating himself to action movies and dropping romcoms has been a good career choice).

Gonna use my powers to will Nosferatu to that 100 million domestic final total. I think it should cross. Would be sweet to get to 110, but I don't think it goes that far.

I think there's a lot to be said for the "star power" of an action star still. Gen X/Millennials remember Stallone, Arnold, JCVD, Jackie Chan, etc. and that's kind of evolved with the Fast & Furious Franchise, Tom Cruise leaning on the Mission Impossible stuff, and the random Jason Statham/Gerard Butler vehicles dropping now. To me, action movies are the "popcorn movie"/"this isn't artsy high drama so just enjoy it" of the blockbuster genre.

Low key I think the Batman/Marvel movies (and Daredevil show) helped continue that too by leaning into the actual action side of the comic book genre rather than just emphasizing the detective side re: Batman or the "mutant"/"superhero" saving people side of Marvel.

Better Man being a colossal bomb is so fascinating. Making a biopic on Robbie Williams isn't a bad idea. Making a $110M film about a singer who isn't very well known in the states is.

It's a weird idea all around. I really only know Robbie for three songs ("Millennium", "Angels" and "Rock DJ"). I remember being creeped out by the Rock DJ video as a kid. But, making it a Monkey Man is weird and tanks any appeal of a crossover hit. Also, it's not even doing that well in the UK as they find Robbie mostly annoying.

That said, it's getting good reviews, and I've seen people online say it's the best biopic since Rocketman. I might check it out despite not knowing much about Robbie Williams. I know this movie has been memed to death online, but I can't really mock it for trying something new with the stale biopic formula. Same with that weird Lego Pharell Williams biopic.

People in the US thinking Williams is a virtual unknown here are dumb. Yes, he was never a massive star and he's more well known in his home country in the UK but he had some hits here and had a hit in the mid 1990s in a boy band before Backstreet/NSYNC took over the world.

Jessica Simpson covered one of his songs at the heigh of her fame so that alone makes him more memorable than someone like Ice Spice.

o_O

Williams was for sure never a big enough star outside the UK to justify a movie like this.

Well I admitted making a microbudget biopic about him is fine and that while he wasn't a massive star here, he did have some notoriety. Just an insane price tag for someone at that level of fame.

It opened for more in Australia than it did in the US, doubt that happens much outside of Australian-made flicks.

Still worth highlighting that Kraven the Hunter may not even make $25 Million domestic (currently sitting at under $60 Mill worldwide) despite a $110 Million budget, which is pretty low for a comic movie!

I said it in the bad movies thread, but Sony's attempt at a live action "Spider-Verse" was like what would happen if Universal kept making big budget "Monsterverse" movies instead of having Blumhouse produce them for smaller budgets that are easier to recoup. Also, outside of the "Venom" movies (which managed to become popular with both capeshit fans and some people who want that kind of thing to be shorter/self aware without being overbearing), nobody was asking for them.

January is always a dead month where it's mostly the holiday holdovers making money. The end of August into September is another slow period.

Dogman is probably going to be a hit, so that should boost the box office next week.

I feel like January has become a bit more interesting for the last few years. You'll still get the usual dump month movies ("Flight Risk", "Night Swim", "Founders Day" and "Fear" (remember those last two?) for example), but it's also become a time for surprise hits ("M3gan" and it's looking like "One of Them Days") and entertaining B action movies ("Plane", "The Bee Keeper" and the "Den of Thieves" movies). So it's gone from mostly being a dump month to a period where you get the kind of low key surprises and pleasures Hollywood doesn't make as much anymore. If anything, there's a lot of streaming movies nowadays that feel like the kind of thing they used to dump into theaters in January.
