Mufasa opened on Friday to a pretty disappointing $13.3 Million whereas Sonic 3 had a more solid $25.75 Million. The 2019 Lion King's Friday was $77.3 Million for comparison's sake and even The Little Mermaid did 3X ($38 Million).

Sonic 3 was right in-line with Sonic 2 ($26.38 Million) and Sonic ($20.92 Million).

If "Snow White" and "Lilo and Stitch" bomb (hopefully they will), then Disney is going to have to either stop making these live action remakes or just put them direct to streaming. Who the hell was asking for a prequel to the live action "Lion King", even if it's from Barry Jenkins?

Lion King cost 200 million so yikes. Unless it has Christmas legs like Puss In Boots had a few years ago. But, I doubt it will, because it has direct competition with Sonic. As well as Wicked and Moana 2 for other family films.

I can see it doing poorly in domestic but much better globally so that the final numbers look decent enough.

I was wrong and Mustafa is showing big legs and passed Sonic, which has surprisingly not been holding that well and seems fan driven. Nosferatu opened surprisingly big too which is fantastic. The Chalamet Dylan biopic opened decently too. Yesterday had 10 movies make over a million dollars, so the cinema is definitely alive and well after a scary few years.

People were talking about Mufasa beating out Sonic 3 during Christmas but it looks like Sonic 3's regained the edge a little going into this weekend (while being in about 300+ fewer theaters yet making more per theater).

On Friday, Sonic did $600K more and Saturday saw $300K more. Sunday's estimates have it tied but I can see Sonic ending up with $100-$200K more too.

This weekend will also see a massive global release of Sonic 3 so it'll be interesting to see its overall box office on Tuesday.

Also Nosferatu seems likely to gross around 100 million domestic which is huge for Horror and Robert Eggers. It already is his highest grossing movie in week 1.

Of note: "The Brutalist" has made over a million in just eight theaters, there was an anniversary screening of "Se7en" that made $915,000, and lol "Kraven the Hunter" has only made $23,700,000 in the US.

Next week is the beginning of the dump months period, with "Den of Thieves 2" and "Better Man" (that Robbie Williams documentary with him as a monkey that's actually getting good reviews). The week after is "Wolf Man", "One of Them Days" and a rerelease of "Sing Sing"
