I got the FFVII guide for christmas for some reason that year after I had pretty much done everything in the game. The only use I got out of it was finding out about the flashback scene in the mansion basement, and using it's maps for an easier time getting the Alexander material.

Personally, played 8 (good intro to the series, Quistis is hot), 10 (loved it, but that ending was down as hell), X-2 (DEAR GOD WHY?), and 12 (not bad, although it sucks when a secondary character shows up your main AGAIN).

And yes, I use guides. I hate not having 100% completion at least once.

I'll still never forgive Square for X-2. Well, for that and letting Mena Suvari voice ANYTHING, much less Aerith, in KH2.

I know nothing about that woman other than that she voiced Aerith in KH2, and I still hate her with a fiery passion. Awful, awful, awful

I don't really think that a crummy strategy guide should really be a strike against the game itself.

Usually no, but the hidden shit in that game was evil. It was like the zodiac spear x 100.

I honestly didn't think it was too bad. I mean finding some of the chocobo spots on the map was a pain in the ass, but I was able to find the majority of them the first time without consulting the guide, it just took some time and exploring. Or is there some other hidden stuff that I'm forgetting?

The Zodiac Spear is like maybe the 3rd or 4th hardest weapon to get. If you want Zodiac Spear x100, try the fucking Tournesol. Or, Heaven forbid, the Danjuro. I still have nightmares about THAT.

I'm not sure how a strategy guide would help, but Excalibur II

Ok yeah THAT one was bullshit, and I don't see how you'd EVER figure that out without a guide. I never bothered going for it, because of how you have to rush through the whole game. I prefer trying to get as powerful and as many powerful items as I can early on. And really was the Exalibur II even that good?

I still find it a shame, that jessie, wedge and biggs didnt get a bigger role than they did.
What if, just what if... You got to the bottom of the Northern Cave and found Biggs, Wedge and Jessie standing over Sephiroth's corpse?

"We wanted to help but then you guys spent all that time at the Golden Saucer at that stupid race and in that underwater airplane and fighting those giant monsters that were just minding their own business. Like, seven days to the end of the world means SEVEN DAYS TO THE END OF THE WORLD, all right?"

I'd figure they were zombies out to kill me since they died on disc 1.

Going back to my earlier post: has anyone else actually acquired the Danjuro in XII? That beats out Excalibur II, IMO, because at least EII is the best weapon in the game. The Danjuro is, what, 4th at best?

The shit you had to do to get that damn thing was gheyer than Gheyerson.

re: Dissidia - Cecil Harvey? He can switch between Dark Knight and Paladin? The fuck? I couldn't even tell who he was in the video until (I think) I saw the Paladin transformation. Games these days have graphics that are TOO good, there's so much crap going on. Get off my porch!

Re: strategy guides - I almost never buy these and use gamefaqs instead. Though I do try to go through a game at least once without any help whatsoever.

I just got around to finishing FFVII this morning (like, 5:30).

Spent an hour leveling up from 55 to 67 and then mopped the floor with the string o' final bosses. Cid had his ultimate weapon and 4x Cut, so he was doing ~25000 damage per attack turn (with an extra 6000 every time we got physically attacked thanks to max Cover & Counter Strike).

I went after Ultimate, but then couldn't find it again so I gave up.

Emerald did nothing but obliterate me so I gave up on him.

Never chased Ruby.

Emerald is a fucker, long live the underwater materia, and you really need reflect and various other counter magic to really stand a chance.

Gotta love side bosses being harder than the main ones.

That's a staple in the games at this point, and I don't mind it, personally.

Emerald wasn't that bad, really. I mean, I died a few times trying to fight him in a "normal" way, and then decided to just all out attack him instead of worrying about healing people; I let them die then brouight them back. Amazingly, it worked on the first try.

Ruby is not that bad if you know the "tricks", but until I figured it out, I died a lot.

Normally I am a completist.. but I fell off the wagon with the FF series. I went the Nintendo route and didn't buy a PSX until FF8 was the big game.. so I just skipped over 7. Wasn't impressed with 8 so I didn't bother with 9 or any of the others that came after it. =\

I tried Ruby and Emerald a couple times...had to give em a pass.
I had a Gameshark which let me fast-level up to 99. Still wasn't enough to beat those fuckers. You pretty much need to know the tricks of specifically how to beat them, because just treating them like an ordinary boss is doomed to fail.

This was probably the best guide available for Final Fantasy VII, and is rare as all hell. I picked this up in early 1998 when I bought the game for the first time. I have long-since sold the guide and still have the awesome poster that it came with, but this was THE definitive guide to the game. It features screen shots of each character's weapon (rather than descriptions like in the Brady Games guide), Limit breaks, bosses, you name it. My only complains are that some of the content were taken from the Japanese version of the game (stuff that didn't make it stateside), and it gave no tips on fighting Jenova and Bizarro/Safer Sephiroth at the end of the game.
