This was probably the best guide available for Final Fantasy VII, and is rare as all hell. I picked this up in early 1998 when I bought the game for the first time. I have long-since sold the guide and still have the awesome poster that it came with, but this was THE definitive guide to the game. It features screen shots of each character's weapon (rather than descriptions like in the Brady Games guide), Limit breaks, bosses, you name it. My only complains are that some of the content were taken from the Japanese version of the game (stuff that didn't make it stateside), and it gave no tips on fighting Jenova and Bizarro/Safer Sephiroth at the end of the game.

Ah yes, the Perfect Guide. DO WANT.

Ok, I know it isn't an actual Final Fantasy game, but Mystic Quest had the best regular battle music of ANY Final Fantasy. I'd play Mystic Quest simply for the regular battle music alone.

Re: Ruby and Emerald weapon. It took me FOREVER to be able to beat them. I think I had had the game for close to two years before I first did. Even though I had master materia already, I was happy to get a second set when I beat Emerald. Only getting a gold chocobo for beating Ruby certainly pissed me off though, as I already had one, and IIRC it's racing stats suck.

I beat Ruby and Emerald, but by using whatever exploits were generally recommended (Final Attack + Phoenix, for instance).

Of course, getting to the point where you can pull that off reminds you of how fucking pointless most FF sidequests of that nature is.

Re: Final Fantasy VII guide--I had that guide, I swear, but I think mine had a different cover.

...damnit, if only I didn't sell it years ago...

I had this guide too.

The only FF I've played extensively was FFVIII which I bought at a movie rental store. I made it to the end of the first disk to find out the 2nd disk was too scratched up to start. Depressing. I started FFIV but I don't remember why I didn't finish.

Your FF 8 disc must have had the holy hell scratched out of it. I still remember how tough those PSone discs were from working at Gamestop and Rhino Games.

My FFVIII was scratched to hell too, but "luckily" it was disc 1, so I never got more than a couple seconds into the opening FMV.

The guitar remix is pretty damn sweet.

I liked 7's regular battle music the most. It's considerably more annoy-proof than 6's, which is too catchy for its own good. The last part before it loops back to the beginning is the best part. As far as various boss battle themes go, Zeromus is the best of all, followed by Jenova and Atma Weapon, and then the rest are all pretty good.

IV is the best of the regular boss battle music. My favourite individual boss theme is Dark Messenger from FFIX. I love how it is a suped up verions of Kuja's regular theme.

In regards to Kingdom Hearts, did you find the second one to be a letdown JHawk? As much as I loved it, I just felt like everything was trying to be overly complicated.

Haven't been in thread, so forgive the late reply, but yeah, a bit of a letdown, although I'm only about 3/4 of the way through, so I have no idea if the ending saves it or not.

RE - FFVII's Weapons. I know it's purely luck but if you roll "Instant Victory" with Cait Sith, it would take down even Emerald Weapon. I magically got that once and it made completing the game that much easier (thanks to the Master Materia). Of course, I then tried it against Ruby Weapon and it failed... that bitch doesn't mess around.

The final bossfight is epic, probably my fav bit of the game. And the ending... well its an ending.

You can actually roll Instant Victory against the weapons? I just figured it was disabled. Fuck just trying for that and resetting and reloading until you got it would probably be quicker than getting your party ready for the fight, and for how long the fights can last. Wish I'd known that.

FF7 hits PSN this week. I guess this is my chance to actually play the game!

Go figure I finally mod a PSP so I can play PS1 games on it, and then they go and release one of the games I did it for in the first place.

Depending on what they charge I may or may not pay for the download, so I can play it on the unmodded PSP. Also the more this sells, probably the better chance of a remake getting made.

You know, with the announcement of FFXIV (2nd MMO) you've got to believe that FF has well and truely been raped to death by now.

Yep. I'm not going to overreact and say "DEATH OF THE FRANCHISE!" but jesus christ.. FFX-2 sucked, FF11 shouldn't have been FF11, FF12 was a letdown, and FF13 doesn't look like it's saving shit at this point.

FFXIV is going to be another MMO? GOD DAMNIT! Why the fuck can't they just name the MMO's something else and not in the sequence? I liked FFXII and look forward to FFXIII, but another MMO bugs me. Just call it Final Fantasy Online and Final Fantasy Online 2. Assholes.

Does the FF7 PSN release add anything, like 16:9 support, or is it just a straight-up port?

I guess I'll probably buy it anyway - gives me an excuse to replay FF7 and see if it still holds up. I'm kind of thinking it's going to age poorly, but I'm curious to see.

I didn't just mean the graphics, I meant the gameplay too. I was so in awe of FF7 when I first played it that I probably forgave a lot of flaws that would annoy me now. It's not going to have that same sense of awe anymore, so I'll probably be more annoyed by obnoxious dungeons or overlong summons.

Sounds like the port is just straight up PS1, though, which sucks. Not even analog support or a translation cleanup. I guess I'm jaded by XBLA ports that are usually HD upgrades with new features. Can't really justify buying it if it doesn't add anything. Definitely nice for people that don't already have the PS1 version, though.

It's not just the graphics, the story is shit by now too. It's great as a teenager, but as an adult? Wow that shit just seems flat out dumb.

At 24 i still love the storyline, the initial "yeah lets be terrorists" is quite boring minus the tranny dressup fun, but the game really gets going after cloud details his version of events during the nibelhelm incident... though tifa just keeping her mouth shut is a massive plot hole.
