Actually, Triple Triad was about the only thing in VIII that I enjoyed. Was glad to find a stand alone PC version of that, that someone made some time ago.

I've got a flash Triple Triad game too. I never understood the hatred for it, considering it was 100% optional and there weren't any items out of it that were must haves you couldn't get any other way. I do understand the hatred of the music, although personally I like it.

What hatred for Triple Triad? It's usually regarded as the bright spot of FF8.

Also, http://ttadvance.ca/

And FF9 is considered a very good game, always has been, but MAN that battle system is slow. It's definitely a top 10 RPG on the console either way.

Final Fantasy VII's biggest problem is that its probably the game in the whole series that deserves a remake. You could play it back then and forgive it for a lot of its flaws. Being the first RPG with 3D graphics on a console, a storyline that unless you went after the little nuggets didn't make all that much sense, character development that is sorely lacking for some characters (Yuffie, Cait Sith), and more. I played it emulator style (that was before it got released on the PSN) and I really do think that SquareEnix should've taken that PS3 demo and blow it up into a full game. There's many glaring faults with the game and I think that if it was polished up, it truly would be one of the best RPGs possible.

They haven't ruled it out apparently, just the guy who did it is on other projects at the moment. Would probably sell like something hot and cake like if they did do it.

Same thing was said about Final Fantasy Tactics, but everyone enjoyed it for making a shit ton more sense with a decent translation.

Besides a remake isn't necessarily made for improvements. Its to enjoy it with current technology. Aside from the whole, "we'll remake it cause we've got no new IPs" bullshit.

Really, everyone enjoyed the PSP version more despite the horrible lag in battle?

There really is no need to remake it. It won't improve the game at all in any way possible.

Money and a new Generation (for which graphixxx are everything) are two reasons I can think of straight away. I'm sure there's more.

I must've gotten a non-really horrible battle lag copy, because the only lag I experienced was spells lag, and it was bearable. Except on summons, and there were rarely any summoners to make me cry. Then again, I never liked summoners so I never kept one in my party.

I'm hearing from folks that Crystal Bearers is apparently bogged down with obnoxious minigames, really sucking away a lot of its appeal.

Ugh.

But will it affect the game/make it better in any way? Better graphics won't improve the game.

I'll come out and admit that I've barely played any Final Fantasy game (Some of III on the DS before I had to sell it for a car downpayment...other than that the closest would be Super Mario RPG).

I just came here to wonder something:

How many of the post FFVII fans do you think would scoff if asked to play the original Final Fantasy, which is now on the Wii Virtual Console, by the way?

It'll make it better in the sense that it won't look so dated and be easier to play through again.

I started the series with FFVII and have gone back and played through (and loved) IV and VI so far. I'd play it.

I wouldn't say completely disregard it (there's still lots of positive impressions), but enough to make you perhaps consider renting first.

It was re-released on Wonderswan, as part of Final Fantasy Origins, as part of Dawn of Souls, and as a standalone remake on PSP. Now it's true that those remakes had the difficulty toned down, but other than that (and partly because of that), I couldn't imagine too many newer FF fans would pick the original, unchanged NES edition over one of the updates, but there are good reasons for it.

The thing I didn't like about the FFVII ending wasn't so much that it wasn't clear, but how it wasn't clear at all what happened, yet most people seemed to be convinced that the planet had chosen to kill all the humans. Well yeah that was a possibility, but there was no clear evidence. And it was just as possible that that hadn't happened and Midgar was just overgrown 500 years later because people moved on to other places.

Seriously, when Advent Children was announced I saw plenty of people bitching BUT WAIT THERE CAN'T BE A SEQUEL ALL THE PEOPLE WERE KILLED!!!! THEY'RE TRYING TO CHANGE THE ENDING OF FFVII!!

No dumbasses, they clarified it that in fact the people didn't die.

Which doesn't make the ending any less lame.

Yeah, I just found out about this/ signed up for it there. I figured what the hell, I don't really care too much either way, and my plan is that as a "real" person it will give me a better chance of getting in.

The reviews for Crystal Bearers aren't so hot, sadly. There's apparently cripplingly awful control and camera issues (you control the camera with the wiimote d-pad. Seriously), poor battle system, and the minigames are supposedly pretty lame. There's a lot of 80/100 reviews, though, so YMMV, but overall it looks like a big letdown.

Forget Crystal Bearers, I just got the original Crystal Chronicles yesterday. I see I need to have a GBA for every player? I don't think I have any cables. Was this even worth it?

I like the original CC, but ONLY in single player mode where you can use a controller. Otherwise it's just a mess with multiple people needing not only a GBA, but a GBA connector cable which very few people ever owned. That and one person having to carry the stupid chalice. In single player mode a moogle carries it for you and it's much nicer.

I came across the original box and instruction manual + maps for FFI on NES while I was at my mom's for x-mas. Further adds to the nostalgia that I've been feeling for this series lately. I think I may d/l this one on Wii and take a run through it for old times sake.

Was there ever a remake of FF1 that fixed all the glitches without toning down the difficulty?

I can't vouch for this from personal experience, but impressions I've read of the Wonderswan Color version say it's still pretty much the same, but that's moot unless there's an English patch anyway.

Final Fantasy Origins has Easy and Normal difficulties, with Normal being basically the same. Supposedly the "Normal" difficulty needs to be unlocked on FFII on Origins, and is available by default on I--but who the hell is going to play Final Fantasy II even once, let alone twice?!

So for English speakers--go with Origins, basically.

I've been going through FF9 again. A lot of fun, and a bit less grim and dour than most of the others. However, goddamn I had forgotten just HOW MUCH TALKING there is in the PS1-era games. Dialogue scenes seem to take up more time than actual playing, aside from stuff like level grinding.

EDIT: and exactly what is the Grand Dragon trick for levelling up on disc 1, anyway? I've heard like three or four completely different versions of how that's supposed to work, and none of them sounded definitive.

Basically FFO on PSX on normal. The best version of FF, imagine Dawn of Souls but with actual difficulty.

I really, really, really, want to be playing FFXIV beta now! Can't be bothered to return to WoW, but I want to play a stupidly huge MMO again.

I'm waiting for the DC Universe one before I bother getting into any others. I find I can only be a part of one MMO at a time..
