I was never a huge fan of Overkill compared to other thrash bands, but I got their new album Ironbound, and it's awesome. I think it's probably the best thrash album by any of the older bands since the early 90s. Better than any of the recent stuff from Exodus, Testament, Megadeth, etc. Definitely my favorite Overkill album.

Overkill and awesome do not belong in the same sentence.

In case you didn't know, the new High on Fire is awesome.

High on Fire are great. Saw them open for Mastodon back in October and came away very impressed. And yes, the new release kicks ass.

On a side note, I'm very pleased to see Bison b.c supporting High on Fire on their upcoming tour. Bison absolutely fucking rule and I can't wait for their new release in April. Check these guys out.

I saw High on Fire once. They were opening for Opeth, and before them were Nachtmystium. Nachtmystium easily stole the entire show, and High on Fire nearly killed it. Maybe it was just the guy doing sound that night, but every song they did sounded identical. I don't mean "well, it's all similar anyway" identical, I mean "recycle everything," Hatebreed identical.

Every song of theirs has sounded exactly the same to me. Lame elevator jazz bullshit, CHUGGA-CHUGGA SCREAAAAAAAM, rapping over the lame elevator jazz, CHUGGA-CHUGGA MINOR CHORDS WHILE I SCREEEEEEAAMMMMM, end song.

I love Candiria because their song writing is never predictable. Every song has ridiculous breaks, an out of his mind drummer, and vocals that go back and forth from screaming to a stacatto delivery to clean singing.

I can see that it's not for everyone, but you should at least be able to appreciate its musicianship. I'm guessing your not a fan of Dillinger Escape Plan or Yakuza either.

I could never get into DEP. I had friends who loved them in high school, but I just couldn't get into them at all. Odd, though, that I don't mind Shai Hulud.

If we're going on contributions to the genre...NYC wins. The entire NYHC scene alone added more to metal than the likes of Unearth, Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, Wargasm, Candy Striper Death Orgy, etc, and NYC has also been home to, among many others, Anthrax, Skinless, Demolition Hammer, and SOD. Popularity-wise, though? Mass wins, given that the first three bands I listed are among three of the most popular in the last decade. Now, the state of New York as a whole, though, would obliterate Mass. No question.

But the Bay Area, Florida, and, recently, Virginia (home to Gwar, Municipal Waste, and pop garbage like Lamb of God) scenes have been so loaded to the brink with talent that they make both of the Northeast US scenes look like pop music.

To be honest/fair, I enjoy both the NY/NE scenes just as much. Between them and the Gothenburg scene, thats my preferred areas of metal.

I know. Even then...I haven't seen Steviekick. A fight between us might be either incredibly one-sided, or an all-out mockery of hand-to-hand combat.

And Bay Area, Stevie. BAY AREA!!!!

I think it would be the all-out mockery you would describe. I do have some love for the Bay area bands, as well. I go back and forth between completely loving them and average appreciation.

I seem to remember Stevie looking like a stand-in for Scott Stapp

Take that for what you will

The new Dillinger Escape Plan is awesome in some parts and totally blows in others. They have the whole motherfucker up so you can listen here:

http://www.myspace.com/dillingerescapeplan

Highlights include "I Wouldn't If You Didn't", which sounds like a Calculating Infinity B-side they redid for this album.

"Widower" sounds like Mastodon with pianos. Heaps of stolen Mike Patton, but that's kinda their singer's thing.

Mike Garson (David Bowie's band) providing all the keyboard, apparently. This is to their advantage.

Chinese Whisper sucks a dick.

I agree with you on the new Dillinger Escape Plan-a really hit and miss affair.

That out of the way, In Vain's new album "Mantra" is pretty impressive, as is Sigh's "Scenes From Hell." Meanwhile, the new Borknagar is pretty "meh", I find the new Orphaned Land to be a let down, and the new Burzum album is underwhelming. I still need to listen to the new Immolation and Rotting Christ albums.

You weren't expecting that Burzum to be good, were you?
Not really. There's a few decent riffs, but he repeats them ad nauseum to the point that you lose all interest in the album. It's still better than those terrible ambient albums he did. Amusingly, some of the proceeds for the new album go to benefit Haiti-though Varg still believes in racial purity bullshit.

Picked up Zombie Hate Brigade's s/t and Krisiun's Southern Storm yesterday. Ran into local scene legend the Undertaker (I'll give you one good guess as to why he's earned that nickname; any of the other NE metalheads have undoubtedly run into him at some point), who is just as imposing on an average day as he is in the pit.

Thinking about picking up the Rotted's "debut" album, and maybe some of the older albums before they changed their name. Any opinions here of them?
