Okay, I'm game

"Lack of Comprehension"

To the best of my knowledge the first ever death metal video ever played on HBB, and one of only a few to get airplay on MTV at all. As death metal seemed to exist outside of even HBB's universe, that was quite a feat for Chuck et al

I got lazy about it for a time and then totally forgot about it. Haha, me.

I'll think about it tonight. In the meantime, enjoy this metal related conversation between Czech and I:

Slayer: Listening to sound samples of albums since then, and I'm still not terribly intrigued
CzechRepublic: I don't believe in samples.
Slayer: I do think 30 second samples at least give me a good start to work with
Slayer: now if the whole song is ten minutes, then there might be an issue
Slayer: but then step 2 is checking out full songs on Youttube
CzechRepublic: I have reservations about that when the audio quality is poor.
Slayer: I'm not that much of an audiophile
Slayer: I just want to know if the song sounds good
CzechRepublic: And I'm a notorious grower. I can't decide if I like a song based on a lo-fi 30-second clip. It took me a long time to really get Steely Dan.
Slayer: I read that as "a notorious growler"
CzechRepublic: oh that too.
CzechRepublic: Don't come near me when I'm eating, I'm like a dog with a steak
Slayer: I think that was subconscious with the death metal I've been listening to
Slayer: It'd be funny picturing you doing death metal growling
CzechRepublic: hurts my throat.
CzechRepublic: I need to growl from the diaphragm. That's been my problem.
Slayer: I try to as well but it just sounds silly and so I can't keep it up
Slayer: Given the abundance of DM bands and amateurs making DM vocal videos on youttube, you'd think it was easy!
CzechRepublic: it's like that game Othello
CzechRepublic: minutes to learn, a lifetime to master!
Slayer: as opposed to the character Othello
CzechRepublic: no response to that one.

So I picked up Exit-13's High Life, which looks to be a best-of including a lot of demos and selected tunes from their discography. Enjoyed the little I actually listened to, especially the little funk part at the end of "Societally Provoked Genocidal Contemplation." Or it may be the beginning of "Ethos Musick," I'm not quite sure off the top of my head.

Also nabbed Kreator's Pleasure to Kill. Maybe it's time I give Eurothrash a true chance instead of listening to a few handfuls of songs and going "yeah...this sounds like Slayer with less focus" like I do for a lot of Eurothrash bands. Still can't find any Response Negative shit, not even online, and I really wanna give them a listen.

So I got that Gorod CD. Jeeeesus christ, those guitarists. Puke-ridiculous.

Wait is puke-ridiculous a good thing or is the guitary wankery so over the top that it makes you want to puke?

Well Agent, you managed to kill my evening! ...not that I had plans tonight or anything.

Proving there's no kill like Overkill, I started off with a small list in my head, then scoured through my iTunes collection hoping to flesh that out a little. That little would turn into a (TLDR) list of over 100, which I turned into a Top Ten per year. I tried to limit myself to two albums per band for the entire decade, with the exceptions of my three favorite bands (PL, MDB and Death). Even though I'm not as big on power and prog as I was c. 1998-2003, I still tried to get a good representation of those albums I enjoyed from that time.

Damn straight you include Chemical Wedding, Slay. Dickinson's solo output is better than maybe half of his Maiden output, IMO. What else is Roy Z involved with? That man can crank out some damn fine riffs.

I've always thought of him as a producer first and foremost, and as that goes he was also involved with Rob Halford's solo albums in the early 00's (do I already have to refer the decade as a whole now?) and Helloween's Dark Ride

Being the proactive sort that I am, I went ahead and compiled an 80's list as well. I did a Top Ten from 1984 and after but for '80-'83 I could barely scrape enough to make Top Five lists, even after looking at outside sources to see if there was anything I'm missing in my collection (so forget any "Best of the 70's" list). I think the reason for that is because the early part of the decade was dominated by the NWOBHM scene, which I've never really been in to.
