The new Dying Fetus is mean as fuck. Production's excellent and everything is incredibly tight, even if the chug riffs are pretty uninspired in points. The super-techy scaling and fast runs are evil enough to make up for it. Way better than the last couple albums they did.

Well, that's enough for me to go buy it. I think the only ones I don't have are War of Attrition and Purification Through Violence. How does it stack to Destroy the Opposition, Agent?

Not even close to DTO, but it's a different kind of animal, really. This new one renders War of Attrition obsolete. You're not missing anything unless you want to be a completist about it.

The new Immortal has leaked. I haven't heard it yet, so has anyone here heard it?

Along with new Immortal and Paradise Lost, a reissued and remastered version of Drudkh's debut album drops tomorrow.

The new voice Brendon is using for Nathan Explosion is going to take some extreme getting used too. The songs on the Dethalbum II caught me the fuck off guard. The first song Bloodlines sounds like Dethklok but Laser Cannon Deth Sentance goes from deep growl to screamo yell and is rattling. Honestly, I can get used to it but right now it's fucking brutal. I guess this is what Small sounds like live and if Awaken from the first album had sounded like this, it would have never worked at all.

Takes some songs that sounded awesome on the show and ruins them greatly. Disappointment in the album, not huge but yeah. Then again, maybe this is just on the deluxe album. Anyone downloaded the regular or bought it, can you tell me if 'Nathan' voice goes through a drastic overhaul?

I saw them live a few days ago, and he sounded just like he did on the first album.

Now the album confuses me even more.

The new Baroness is fucking incredible. The new Immortal is unfortunately unspectacular.

I don't know if this belongs here or not, but I downloaded the new Rammstein album. I hope it doesn't suck as horribly as the last one.

Russian Circles, a band that I had seen previously live and deemed to be lame posers, just released the best post rock album in years. It's called Geneva. Get that shit.

New Rammstein is pretty damn good, and a lot better than their last effort.

The new Wodensthrone album "Loss" is a nice piece of Atmospheric, Folky Black Metal, and the new Candlemass is a pleasent surprise. Also, I'm impressed with Be'Lakor, and their new album "Stone's Reach" is really good.

If it weren't for the new Sunn 0))) Candlemass, them either Mammon's War by Count Raven or Hymns of Blood and Thunder by The Gates of Slumber would be my picks for best Doom albums of the year.

Also, Agent: If you haven't yet, you fucking need to hear the new Ancestors album Of Sound Mind. Seriously, best Stoner Metal I've heard in ages.

Got quite a few good pickups from this last week:

Barren Earth - Our Twilight: Four song EP from a group that includes the singer from Swallow the Sun, guitarist from Kreator, plus both a former bassist and keyboardist from Amorphis. Music sounds like a mix of Opeth and Amorphis, and at only $4, a worthwhile pickup for fans of those bands

"Our Twilight"

Few Against Many - Sot: Yet another band including former Scar Symmetry vocalist Christian Älvestam, who has been busy with quite a few different bands lately it seems. Recommended to fans of Gothenburg-death, although right now it's not available in physical or digital form in the states, so you'll have to get it the naughty way

"Blod"
"Skapelsens Sorti"
"Sot"

Eternal Tears of Sorrow - Children Of The Dark Waters: Near the end of last year out of nowhere I discovered Draconian, a band which had apparently been around for awhile but somehow flew under my radar in spite of my love for gothic metal, and Turning Season Within became a late sleeper addition for my Top 10 list for '08. This year sees a repeat of this same phenomena with Finland's ETOS, who plays a similar style of epic goth metal

"Baptized by the Blood of Angels"
"Tears of Autumn Rain"
"Sea of Whispers"

Katatonia - Night is the New Day: After going through this one a couple times on work-related drives, I'm not sure this one is as good as TGCD, but overall I do think it's still a pretty good release for them though. Plus it helped to make up for the disappointment I felt with Faith Divides Us. This one could sneak in the bottom end of my Top 10 list for this year

"Forsaker"
"Liberation"
"Inheritance"

Also of note: Devin Townsend's next release, Addicted, comes out next Tuesday.

Hmm, this post was much longer than I had planned... I suppose it could make up for my lack of posting otherwise though

Also, shall we go ahead and post the "U-Z" thread to get the whole alphabet threads concept out of the way?

Hey you metal guys, what is your take on Fear Factory? I'm not familiar with much from them post about 98 or so, but I liked their first 3 albums well enough.

What an unhelpful post. Did he really need a list of fifty bands with no context?

I'd say your next step should be Sleep. Pick up Holy Mountain, sit with it for a while, and then you'll be ready to tackle the Holy Grail of the genre, Dopesmoker.

I hope Red Baron doesn't drown in that sea of suggestions

Based off what you said, RB, it sounds like you might be more into gothic doom than stoner doom. To start off, I'd recommend My Dying Bride's Light at the End of the World and Solitude Aeturnus' Into the Depths of Sorrow, both of which are very high on my personal favorite albums list. I have some others in mind but I don't want to overwhelm you.

If you're looking for stoner doom as well, based off what I've seen Agent and GF talk about, I'd guess to go with Electric Wizard's Dopethrone. They'd (well, Agent would, unless GF wants to whittle his list down a bit) be better for suggestions though, as stoner doom isn't my area at all.

Ok, let be a little more specific

If Candlemass is your thing, then give Solitude Aeturnus (Beyond the Crimson Horizon might be a good starting place), Count Raven (Try Destruction of the Void, or their new one Mamon's War), While Heaven Wept, Warning and Isole a shot.

If you want more Sabbath style Doom, then Pentagram (especially Day of Reckoning), the Obsessed (especially The Church Within), Saint Vitus (Try Born Too Late), Witchcraft (Try their s/t), Witchfinder General (try Death Penalty), Cathedral (they even had Tony Iommi on one of their albums) and Trouble (Especially Psalm 9-though that might annoy you as it has Pro-Christian lyrics) and of 13 a shot.

If Sunn 0))) is your thing, give some of Earth's earlier material a shot, especially Earth 2.

If Stoner Doom like Sleep and Electric Wizard is your thing, then give Reverend Bizarre (give In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend and II: Crush the Insects a shot) or Bongzilla a chance.

If you want a more Gothic, Paradise Lost style, then yeah, My Dying Bride is great, though you may want to give Tiamat's Clouds and Wildhoney a chance, as would Virgin Black's Requiem - Mezzo Forte.

For a really slow, death like and sorrow filled style with gurgled vocals, you might like Funeral Doom. Some recommendations on that front would be Ahab's Call of the Wretched Sea
and Skepticism's Stormcrowfleet.

Hope this helps.
