I've undoubtedly said this before, but Schaeffer is one of those guys who's obviously talented but seems to think that they're better than they really are. He's like a power metal Zakk Wylde in that he does what he does very well but his ego shines through 9 times out of 10 and ruins what could be a really, really solid piece of work. Horror Show is a fucking fantastic album, even just for "Jack" and "Damien," but the majority of Iced Earth's work is meh due to Schaeffer never really branching out. I've even grown accustom to Barlow's voice, too (which I used to hate).

It's so hard to find a drummer who's willing to play metal and not any sort of -core bullshit.

Those are easily my favorite songs off the album.

Alive in Athens is a great metal album. I'm still impressed by Iced Earth's musicianship. I wish I had found out about them sooner than I did.

Have you listened to the 2 disc or the 3 disc set? It's one of the best live albums I've ever heard.

Hey! Early Man have a new one. A little different from the first one. The couple tracks I've heard so far are way more centered on Megadethy type stuff rather than blending a few genres of metal in their protoplastic states to form one cohesive kickass thing of power/thrash/heavy blues that ended up being one of my favorites of the last decade. Thing is, Closing In was a major grower for me, so maybe this will do the same.

Anyone else pick up Maiden's new CD, The Final Frontier?

I just put it on, less then 2 minutes in to the title track, and I'm digging it. Different for Maiden so far, but enjoyable.

All I know of them is what they contributed to the ATHF movie soundtrack, "More Than Meat and Eyes." It was decent.

I listened to it on the way to work this morning. I liked it a lot, at least what I heard. I fell asleep on the train, so I have to relisten to the album.

Checked 'em out. Meh. Standard goregrind/porngrind with the "yeah, I like Six Feet Under, so what?" faux-burp vocals. Music's decent, though, so they're worth a listen for humor if nothing else.

That and one guitarist uses a BC Rich Beast. I like that.

I gave ReVamp a listen. Its the new group of After Forever's frontwoman. If you like AF, you'll like ReVamp. There is literally no change in sound. Not that that's a bad thing.

Ah, black metal videos. They never cease to be hilarious.

Just picked up the following...

Cephalic Carnage - Misled by Certainty
New one, just got into the band as a whole. I'd heard them off and on over the years but just started to really get into them thanks to Anomalies and Xenosapien.
Cephalic Carnage - "Abraxas of Filth"

Exmortus - In Hatred's Flame
I've been looking for this album for a while now, ever since I saw the video for "Triumph by Fire." Solid, solid, SOLID death/thrash.
Exmortus - "Triumph by Fire"

Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet
I'm using this album as a starting point since I've both heard the title track and am a huge fan of the source material, that being the Bret Easton Ellis novel Lunar Park. I've enjoyed everything I've heard from them thus far and finally picked up a whole album.
Porcupine Tree - "Fear of a Blank Planet"

Vader - Necropolis
It's fucking Vader. Another classic band I'm just getting into, of course, due to a not-brief-enough shying away from death metal for a while.
Vader - "Never Say My Name"

So I found out that for the Iced Earth show that I'm going to, that I mentioned above, that Sons of Liberty will be opening. I like their album, but if I was going to choose a Jon Schaffer side project to open for IE, I would have loved to seen Demons & Wizards.

ProgPower was great last night. we were able to meet all the members of Hammerfall and Tarot at their meet-and-greet and get some albums signed. Stormwarrior and Oceans of Sadness did OK, and DGM was really good. DGM's frontman just served to further the stereotype that white people shouldn't dance. Delain had an hour delay, but they fucking rocked. Their frontwoman is gorgeous. Tarot did a really good set and played nearly everything from "Suffer Our Pleasures". They didn't play "I Rule" or "Ashes to the Stars", so that was a bit of a downer. Hammerfall did a great set too, and played pretty much all of their well-known stuff.
