Exhorder's return to capitalize on the thrash revival should prove interesting, especially since the drop-off in quality from Slaughter at the Vatican to The Law is painfully noticeable.

Oh, and Goatsnake, Coroner, Exhorder, and Orange Goblin, too.
And Voivod and Kylesa*!

*I hear the new one is pretty awesome.

New albums from Atheist and Deathspell Omega are out, and the new Agalloch drops on the 23rd.

I've been listening to Warrel Dane's solo album a lot recently as well as Nevermore's catalog. There's some awesome stuff there, and it's a shame that they never got the recognition they deserved on a national front. Jeff Loomis' solo album is top notch as well.

Good choice with that Nachtmystium album.

Anyways, the new Atheist is a huge letdown (it sounds like a mediocre, reheated version of "Piece of Time.")

I'm reading mixed reviews of it, which strikes me as odd considering I remember across-the-board praise when it was released. There's also been some talk that it's just a slightly blackened version of Pink Floyd's Meddle, but I think that's quite brilliant rather than of poor taste.

Thoughts on Malevolent Creation? Anyone?

I picked up The Big 4 concert DVD today. It's fucking awesome so far. I'm listening to SLAYER!!!'s set first and they are killing it.

They actually make the songs off of World Painted Blood sound good. The biggest problem with that album (besides "Playing With Dolls" and how awful it is) was the "modern" production of it, so it makes sense that it'd sound better live.

Wait until Megadeth's set. You can barely fucking hear Mustaine for half of it. Metallica's set is marred by an abundance of shyte songs (why they decided to bust out more stuff off of the Black Album than Master of Puppets I have no idea, given that their fans skew towards the older material live) and Kirk's hand injury causing him to fuck up half of his leads. Slayer and Anthrax own the fucking night, easily.

EDIT:
I could tell what song the Slayer X-Mas lighting was done to just by watching the lights. No speakers on my work comp. Fucking AWESOME.

I watched some of Metallica's set and was wondering what was with the tape on Kirk's hand. What happened?

Anyone heard of Storm Warrior? They're a fairly unknown power metal group, and were one of the Saturday night openers for this year's ProgPower USA show. I've had their song, "Heading Northe" stuck in my head for a while. DGM, from Italy, is another band I've started listening to this year. They have a pretty good sound, and some nice keyboard work in their songs.

Picked up some discs from Wretched, Insidious Disease, and Coldworker. My favorite of the bunch thus far has been Insidious Disease. Straightforward death metal with an underlying theme of grooving thrash. Wretched would be that much better if they didn't use a breakdown (or two or three) in every song, because otherwise they're pretty fucking solid death. Coldworker is like a grindier Suffocation, like what would happen if you threw Tomb-era Cannibal Corpse into a blender with Rotten Sound. Not bad, but the mid-heavy production hampers it a little bit (though the drums sound perfect).

^One of the best one-off albums in the history of the genre. Essential. By the way, they may be reuniting at a metal festival in Finland and putting together a compilation album of demo-era stuff with a new track or two.

Oh, from the comments section of one of their vids:

I remember when I first heard this album. The following night I had a strange, demented dream where I was kidnapped by this gook who lived in this trailer and he performed experiments and mutations on living organisms. I was also forced to have sex with a deformed and ugly female, I had to flush chopped up snakes down a toilet, and plenty of other weird things went on in it. And I know it was because of this great band I had such a dream. Amazing what music can do to the subconscious mind.

Kirk always has tape on his hand. He may have f'd himself up, but that tape has been on his hand live for years, at least the stuff he wears near/around his palm. I haven't seen the DVD yet of this performance.

Why is Kirk's right hand wrapped during live shows?
That is Kirk's picking hand, which he does hit pretty hard playing his guitar. The tape cover the lines in his palm that break open as he plays.

If you are looking for an awesome Metallica DVD/Blu ... outside of Binge and Purge obviously... pick up the Nimes Dvd/Blu or even the Mexico City DVD/Blu from this past year, both are very good.

I want to pick up Binge and Purge so bad but it's like $45.

It's worth it. I had the original VHS release in the huge box that I still have somewhere(think I paid almost 100$ for it), then I got the re-relase that came out on DVD later. It's still 2.0 audio though if I remember quickly, so don't expect to be blown away, but performance wise it was Metallica at the top of their live game, IMO.

The cool thing about the Live Shit: Bigne & Purge DVD is that it came with the album itself, as well as a DVD of a live performance from '89 that blew the main feature right the fuck out of the water. It's also only half as long, if even, but it's all 80's material, none of the garbage from the Black Album. Well worth the price, especially since it sells for $100 brand new in some places.

Yeah.. The Seattle 89 performance. That's what I was referring too with them at the top of their live game. That whole concert is fantastic.
