I haven't seen them in person, just on film, and it looks like the put on a hell of a show.

Tarot (fronted by Nightwish's bass player, Marco) has finished a 25th Anniversary rerecording of "Wings of Darkness" that kicks 12 different kinds of ass. You can find the new video on Youtube.

I'll have to check out the Tarot video. Thanks for the heads up.

As for Rammstein, I saw the on the first Family Values tour. They kicked all kinds of ass.

That's just too fitting.

Fun note: Rammstein are banned from playing indoor shows in Massachusetts due to the pyrotechnics they use. This comes primarily as a repercussion of the Station fire that killed 99 because the building wasn't up to code, was beyond capacity, and pyrotechnics were set off by somebody without experience.

That's it. Nevermore's done. You can't continue the band when the core songwriter (Loomis) leaves. Even Warrel Dane's solo album had Loomis all over it.

Roy Khan also left Kamelot this afternoon. He's missed most of their Pandemonium tour and has been dealing with "personal problems " with the lead rumor being that he found religon. A HUGE blow to the band who is currently tourig with several temporary frontmen including Fabio Lione from Rhapsody of Fire.

Yeah, this is not going to end well for them. I don't know if they're going to try to go on, but they shouldn't. I got into Nevermore about 10 years ago and was lucky to meet them one time. It was during Megadeth's festival that they put together a few years back at Jones Beach in NY. I was so excited that Nevermore was on the tour, but they went on a 4 fucking pm and my friends and I didn't get their until about 4:45 and saw the last 15 minutes of their set. When I met them, I told them how pissed I was and they agreed with my anger. Nice guys and I wish everyone the best. I hope we get more solo stuff from Loomis, and I hope he and Dane are on good terms and we get another solo Dane album.

Good lord was that amazing. Marco can do no wrong, in my opinion. He's one of the greatest people in heavy metal right now. I wish he would get more play here in America.

The new Leaves Eyes is quite a disappointment. In an effort to distance themselves from the sound of Alexander Krull's other band, Atrocity, it is mainly Liv Kristine providing vocals here with Krull making a couple appearances. The songs are mostly quite slow with many simply being re-recordings of traditional folk songs. Unless you're a diehard fan, you can probably skip this one.

I picked up two discs last week on a whim because they were on sale, Warmen's Unknown Soldier and Evocation's Apocalyptic. The former is a side project of Children of Bodom keyboardist James Warman and the latter is a Swedish death band that's been around for about 20 years.

Warmen's Unknown Soldier works best as background noise as it's mostly just instrumentals designed to showcase James Warman's wanking ability on the black and white keys. Some of the parts of the songs are solid but it's just lacking anything remotely interesting overall.

Evocation's Apocalyptic fares much better but still lacks that necessary punch in the fucking jugular that really separates the best European death from the rest. I'm not as big a fan of the Swedish take on death that a lot of other metalheads are, but Evocation comes close to making it fully work before just deciding to calm down and go through the motions.

Just picked up last night...

Realm%20of%20Chaos.jpg

Bolt Thrower - Realm of Chaos
I've only heard a handful of Bolt Thrower tunes but I've been on a massive death metal kick (brutal, tech, gore, classic, etc.) for the last few months and just got paid, so I figured why not grab a highly rec'd album from them? This is the re-mastered version that came out in '05 from Earache.

19722.jpg

Hypocrisy - Osculum Obscenum
I listened to this in full last night on the drive from the Newbury Comics in Norwood back home. Oh SHIT is this fantastic. Rarely a dull point on the entire album and each song is just better than the last. Like Bolt Thrower, I've only heard a handful of tunes, so I nabbed this one and was mightily impressed.

mi.jpg

Misery Index - Heirs to Thievery
Listened to this one on the way to work this morning. It's pretty decent and shows that this band formed after splitting from Dying Fetus, but I'd take even mediocre DF over MI any day due to MI being a bit too...I dunno...generic. Hints of brilliance with some solid slam riffs, but everything seems so muddled together and each song has issues standing out from one another (a big problem I find with recent death and grind releases, notably with Dismember and Rotten Sound, is that no song really stands out from another beyond one or two parts). Forgettable but decent.

Vital Remains - Dechristianize
I always overlook Vital Remains for one reason or another and I don't know why. I like Deicide (The Stench of Redemption is probably in my top 20 death metal albums), they're relatively local (based out of Providence), and I've seen a lot of good reviews for their stuff...so yeah. I'll be giving this a hard listen tonight while the fiancé is out doing some coursework for her job.

Hammerfall's new album has leaked. I'm about to give it a listen. Can't wait to pick it up when it hits shelves.

Of the three discs I picked up the other night that I've listed to thus far, Vital Remains - Dechristianize is my favorite. Now I just need to pop in Bolt Thrower.

Dechristianize and Antichrist by Akercocke always battle in my mind for the title of best death metal album of the 2000s.

Akercocke's not bad. I think an occasional brief foray into brutal death territory when I initially began digging death metal soured me for a while on straight-up DM, but I'm definitely getting back into it.

Wait...Job For A Cryptopsy? Like, did they blend the Skinless-lite JFAC with Unspoken King or with, you know, any of the good Cryptopsy stuff?

EDIT:
Speaking of which, Skinless has disbanded. Their gig at Maryland Deathfest this past weekend was their final one. That's a major fucking shame.

I was using Job For A Cryptopsy to refer to The Unspoken King. I have my hopes for the new one now that Jon Levasseur is back, but they may be too far gone.

Ah. The lack of speakers at work led me to believe you were speaking of an awkward mash-up that would actually be interesting to hear.
