RICK ROSS TEFLON DON LIVEBLOG

"I'm Not a Star" - starts off with a bang with the Boss Going Hard over amped up, ominous strings and skittering drums. The hook consists of Ricky saying "I'M NOT A STAR" (the only way to represent Rick Ross lyrics is in all caps) over and over with dramatic pauses in between. 1/1

"Free Mason" - see above. This beat is pretty incredible. Blueprint 3 would have been, like, a million times better if Jay had chosen to rap over stuff like this instead of faggy space disco. Like the first track, this has a sense of urgency to it that I think's been missing from a lot of recent mainstream rap. Like, it sounds like Ross is rapping to save the world, or something. 2/2

"Tears of Joy" - Track starts with a sample of some dude quoting Huey P. Newton and talking about pulling a gun on pigs. Good start. Track itself involves Ross rapping Meaningfully over a wailing guitar and some pretty sick drums while Cee-Lo croons in the background. "Biggie Smalls in the flesh livin life after my death". Uhhh. This is about as far removed from "Hustlin" as you can get. What a bizarre career trajectory this minimally talented fat fuck has followed. "Not to dwell on the past/But to keep it real I gotta represent for Emmit Till" lol. 3/3

"Maybach Music III" - Holy shit this beat is like the definition of 'luxurious'. The audio equivalent of gleaming luxury cars and sun drenched yachts. Oh, this is a posse cut. TI is up first. If 'King Uncaged' is full of rapping like this I'll be very, very happy. Up next is Jadakiss who just does a Jadakiss thing and who even cares at this point. The beat switches up and gets Super Dramatic for Ross's verse. You know how people used to describe, like, Afghan Whigs and Smashing Pumpkins albums as 'wide screen'? This is the rap version of that. 4/4

"Live Fast, Die Young" - A Kanye beat! Without auto-tune!! Like everything else on the album it's blockbuster sized. Ross might have the best ear for beats of any rapper ever. There's a part where the beat just goes for like 30 seconds without any rapping and it sounds like an outro but then Ross shows back up! Cool. Haha he just said "Look at Haiti/Children dyin round the clock, nigga/I sent a hundred grand/But that's a decent watch, nigga". In structure, scope, and ambition this sounds like a Late Registration track. Again, I can't believe the guy who made 'Hustlin' made this. 5/5

"Super High" - I think I talked about this in the summer jams thread. Another obscenely luxurious soul sampling beat. Six tracks in and not a single weak song. On a circa-2010 mainstream rap album. That must be some kind of record. 6/6

"No. 1" - This is the 'club track' I guess. Weakest thing so far. The hook is sorta bad, unfortunately. Haha a Diddy verse. Trey Songz is here, too, and he still really, really wants to be R. Kelly. Unbelievably, Ross's rapping is the only thing that saves this from being totally worthless. 6/7

"MC Hammer" - Produced by Lex Luger, the dude who made those Waka Flocka tracks posted above. The beat knocks, but this sort of cheap synth/mixtape style production sounds sort of out of place here. Ross is still rapping like his life depends on it. There's not even really a discernable hook here. It's just Ross GOING IN for like 3 minutes. "Credit card scams/That was for the faggots/Motherfuck window shoppin, boy I gotta have it." "My baddest bitches Latin, but they call me 'loco'/Until I fuck them in they ass out in Acapulco." Ahhhh a Gucci Mane guest verse. This album is overloading my seratonin receptors. Fuck. 7/8

"BMF" - Another Lex Luger track. The transition from the last one to this is basically seamless, and does a lot to erase the mixtapey feeling. It's like a fuckin cheap synth mini suite or some shit. Holy shit a Styles P verse. 8/9

"Aston Martin Music" - Befitting it's name, this sounds cheaper than 'Maybach Music.' Oh, Drake is on this. Haha he sings like four lines and then it sounds like he's about to start rapping but a Ross verse comes on instead. This is sort of boring. Neat outro, but not enough to save it. I guess it's sort of a nice comedown after the last two songs, but meh. 8/10.

"All the Money in the World" - This is the 'official' last song. As a stand-alone thing it's nowhere near as good as most of what preceded it, but it's got a pretty nice "end credits" vibe so I guess it works. Pretty cool extended outro. You know how 'Kid A' climaxes with 'Idioteque' and then just sort of hangs around and simmers in the aftermath? These last two songs are sort of like the big budget rap version of that. Rick Ross is rap's Radiohead. 9/11

iTUNES BONUS TRACK: "Audio Meth" - whoa this starts with Raekwon giving Ross a shoot out. And it samples the 'Shook Ones pt. 2' guitar line! I can see why this was left as a bonus track. It's sort of half-assed outside of that sample.

Final verdict: best album of the year, probably. holy shit.

Which planet would that be? Cause it's certainly not Earth.

If Lil Wayne can get people believing by shouting it all the time, Ross can do it with a bit more subtlety with the way he is rapping right now.
