Tracks on 69 Love Songs

5. "When my Boy Walks Down the Street"
4. "Let's Pretend We're Bunny Rabbits"
3. "Yeah! Oh Yeah!"
2. "Papa Was a Rodeo"
1. "The Luckiest Guy On the Lower East Side"
5. A Chicken With Its Head Cut Off
4. I Don't Want to Get Over You
3. The Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side
2. No One Will Ever Love You
1. Sweet Lovin' Man

I tried to do a top five Smiths and I couldn't do it. "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" and like 20 songs tied for second. What a mess.

Yeah, always liked that one way more than Pink Flag. I think I fell in love from the first 15 seconds.

I mean it's great and I don't have anything negative to say about it but I'm not sure that I actually do prefer it to any of those albums. Could possibly drop Y in its favour, which sounds like the correct decision so ignore my previous sentence.

Smiths albums (no way I'm tackling songs right now):

5. The World Won't Listen
4. Strangeways, Here We Come
3. Meat Is Murder
2. Hatful of Hollow
1. The Queen Is Dead

YOU BASTARD!!! I could whip up a top fifty Sabbath riffs list if I had the time.

1. Symptom Of The Universe
2. Hole In The Sky
3. Under The Sun/Everyday Comes And Goes
4. Children Of The Grave
5. Black Sabbath

Fuck, I wanna slit my throat for not including Sabbra Cadabra, Supernaut, and Into The Void. That was hard.

Paranoid not being listed is because I've heard "War Pigs", "Paranoid", "Iron Man", and "Planet Caravan" so many times that I just skip them sometimes when I'm listening to it. Still a classic album.

Smiths albums (which is pretty easy):
1 - The Queen is Dead
2 - Louder Than Bombs
3 - The Smiths
4 - Strangeways, Here We Come
5 - Meat Is Murder

Really don't see anyone ever arguing with #1 unless they're being an asshole or choosing one of the "comps" for singles appeal.

Smiths songs (which is almost impossible):
1 - Still Ill
2 - Cemtry Gates
3 - Never Had No One Ever
4 - Rubber Ring
5 - That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore

With the exception of the first 2, I could see that changing on almost a daily basis, though.

And for optimum depression...

Morrissey albums:
1 - Vauxhall and I
2 - Viva Hate
3 - Bona Drag
4 - You Are The Quarry
5 - Your Arsenal

Not very hard because Kill Uncle and Maladjusted are pretty shit. Southpaw Grammar has potential but it's ruined by the fact that some of the songs aimlessly drag on. I'm not against 13 minute tracks, if they're really good, but most of those songs are stretched out by stupid shit. Also, if all of Your Arsenal was like the second half, it would be higher. If I did a Morrissey songs list "Seasick, Yet Still Docked" would be 1 or 2.

I also really loved Fishscale, and listened to it way more than Ironman. Although I definitely agree with Liquid Swords, 36 Chambers, and Cuban Linx 1 & 2.

I know it's all a matter of taste, but I think you're selling Meat Is Murder way short. Only song I don't like on there is "What She Said," and even that one's not all that bad. "Well I Wonder" is beautiful rainy-day soundtrack, "Barbarism Begins At Home" is Andy Rourke's moment of glory, and while I don't have "How Soon Is Now?" in even my top 15 Smiths songs, it's still pretty good, albeit long.

"Still Ill" is okay, but how does that jump the rest of those very good songs, and where oh where is "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out"?

I like Meat is Murder. Like, me saying it's number 5 there is still saying it's top 20 all-time. On another day, I might put it above Strangeways... but the other 3 are just 3 of my favourite albums, full stop. So something has to come up short. It's Meat is Murder because the music is generally...I don't know?...knee-slapping? ("Nowhere Fast", "Rusholme Ruffians" etc). And the lyrics are distant and I can't relate as much. Also, I have to turn the album off one track early because I can't listen to "Meat Is Murder" more than once or twice a year.

"Still Ill" is just one of those songs that means something to me. I am fully aware it's generally not considered to be one of their best, but certain lines bring back vivid memories for me. I also believe it's about homosexuality (the "illness") and I can relate to that. The line "there are brighter sides to life and I should know because I've seen them...but not often" could just about summarise the entire catalogue of Morrissey's lyrics. Also, the Peel session version (found on Hatful of Hollow) is just tragically beautiful, with the harmonica and all.

I like "There Is a Light...", just not as much as the others listed. It would probably be 6th or 7th, though. I'm probably just cynical with it because it's one of the bigger hits and I've probably heard it a billion times.

It's the first half of Your Arsenal that pushes it down. The first four tracks, in particular, are all average, to me. The middle is really good, but the last three songs are wonderful. Like I said, "Seasick..." is MAYBE my favourite of all of his songs. "I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday" is probably his only truly optimistic song, and he sings the fuck out of it. If he could have found a way to stick "Jack The Ripper" on there, it would have been dreamy. It was the B-side to "Certain People...", I think he wrote it too late to include on the album but he does it live a lot. In the event you've never heard it (it was on Beethoven is Deaf) I recommend it.

And I fully admit to loving YATQ more than most. I just LOVE how that entire album is a huge "fuck you" with "Come Back To Camden" (which has led to tears shed, not gonna lie) and "Let Me Kiss You" thrown in randomly.

Strangeways is my least favorite. Meat Is Murder would be my number 3 or 4, probably 4. S/T and Queen are the tops for me. I'd also rank Still Ill as one of their best songs. Your assessment of it is pretty much how I feel about it. And, I know I'm in the minority but I actually really like Kill Uncle. Such a sucker for Smiths/Morrissey chats.

EDIT: I love I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday.

Clearly, I'm a sucker for it too. And my favourite thing about Kill Uncle is "Found Found Found" because I go back and forth about whether it's supposed to be sarcasm or genuine. The last line is perfect.

I'm not the biggest fan of TNFD. It's not bad, just too peppy (despite the lyrical content). WLYK is just average, for me. At least you didn't mention Glamorous Glue. I can't believe he chose to re-release that recently.
