Vintage Independent Wrestling Thread: Discuss the Stars of Today Yesterday When They Were Stars of Tomorrow

This is what I started last night. Opener is the Last Blood Battle Royal that Foley complained about in his book. Spirit is right there even if the polish isn't yet. It just feels right to me, much more of what I'm akin to than the 1993 ECW shows (although I'm loving those).

Actually am pausing that one for a bit since I found a 1990 show and I'm sorry, proto ECW doing shows just before Warrior wins the belt is what's up for now.

Independent wrestler Artist Artest passed away at yesterday's XVW event. He collapsed at the event and was rushed to the hospital but did not make it.

That's two deaths in less than a week at Indy events.

Just awful.

Honestly ECW-era Snuka is one of the most pathetic things I've seen in wrestling. Like it's an amazing advertisement for never becoming a wrestler. I bet Benoit's brain sounded like a 1993 Snuka promo near the end.

Also Warrior ruining the NWC is low key one of the saddest declines to a promotion that could've succeeded.

Paul Orndorff and Original Midnight Express member Norvell Austin vs Randy Rose and Condrey - the Midnight Express! I didn't dig deep into the timeline but I think this predates them forming as a trio???? This TV is from 1981 best I can reckon.

Bob Armstrong cuts the main event promo for his son Brad vs Mr Saito

Bunklhouse Buck (Jimmy Golden) looking like a southern Romeo compared to his 1994 look here.

Mr. Saito vs Roy Welch Holy shit I want to see a shoot version of this given both men's rep. I appreciate the grappling in this match!

Condrey and Rose vs Ricky Gibson and some jabroni

Ahmed should've kept the Sabu pants. Adds to the aura.

Jeep is up there with Giant Haystacks as far as worst for me. And yeah I'd be down for that match in a heartbeat.

Dear lord I'm not sure I've ever comprehended that Loch Ness vs Jeep Swenson could have happened at Uncensored 96

Hogan should have called up his AWA buddy Otto Wanz to be the real German heel in the Alliance to End Hulkamania.
"The Booty Man has been blinded by the bratwurst juice Tony!"

Jeep/Haystacks would be the worst match in history. Should've happened.

Wanz/Giant would've been titties though.

Even reading these results since 1997 somehow didn't prepare me to see 55 year old Dory Jr face RVD. OR 200 year old 42 year old Jake Roberts teaming with the Headhunters vs Masato Tanaka, Hakushi and Haybusa.

Heel Bret with his EVIL bros cheating vs Terry Funk is good shit too.

Cactus tries the Hangman spot vs Sabu, but the ropes don't know how to work, brother.

How is there a NEW Justin Credible on the Indy circuit? What happened to PJ Walker? Didn't HE have that name?

Scott Steiner/DDP (turns into Steiners/DDP and Rikishi)
Jack Swagger/Ken Shamrock
Hassan and Davari/bWo
Madusa/Victoria
Nexus (PJ Black, Fred Rosser, Joe Hennig)/ Tough Enough (Maven, Al Snow, and Kenny King)
Shane Douglas/Sean Waltman
Low Ki/Juvi
Mamalukes (with Disco)/Demolition (with Jacqueline)
PCO/Rhino/CW Anderson

We need a update series on the 90s indy geeks.
- What did Chicken Neck (weighing in at 1.29 a pound) do after his PWI fame dwindled?
- Did the Gargoyle use the dot com boom to make sick porn based on his gimmick of sucking on opponents toes and armpits?
- Why didn't WCW bring in Big Slam to mock Vader in 1996?
- Did Frank Finnigan live out a natural life before diabetes overtook him?
- How bad was Jesse Hennig that he couldn't even get some nepo shots as a JTTS for WCW or WWF?
- Did the Metal Maniac become a uber driver after years of being Snuka's handler?

The Sept 86 dirtsheets reveal Florida, dead on it's ass, changed their name as they planned to try and EXPAND and build up a more national program in the wake of losing NWA champ dates, etc. This was a short term deal and ultimately they just were bought up by JCP instead of being allowed to die on the vine.

(16.09.1988) WWA - Event @ in Kansas City, Kansas, USA
So they ran this show in a 10,000 seat arena. They drew 100 fans.
Best part was they paid for 23 security guards, as they expected to draw for reasons I can't fathom.

Tommy Gilbert was booking. Eddie Gilbert was currently away from Continental supposedly legit hurt. So when owner David Woods got wind of this it lead to a falling out with Gilbert, ending the legendary Heyman/Gilbert booking run there that modern eyes have now deemed over rated.
