Three thoughts.

1. I'm glad it's in kayfabe. I had a feeling it would be, but it makes me actively happy to see some carnie shit from the early 90s.

2. His form on the abdominal stretch is perfect.

3. Someone, somewhere, is using this as bate material. Possibly on this very board.

Fat PS Hayes and Bad Hair Cut Jimmy Garvin living their best lives.

We were robbed of the Freebirds in WCW's 1995 shitty tag division!

If Ricky Morton and Tommy Rich could be a washed ECW team, why not the Birds?

Hayes cutting vaguely race baiting promos on the Gangstas in SMW?

Hayes is almost 2 decades younger than modern Jericho here.

Windy City Wrestling with some painful backstage promos but you can see some AWA 89 All Stars as The Tokyo Bullets, only one of the Texas Hangmen(?) and Col Debeers take part in a battle royal. Doug Somers is also in the battle royal and he made the pink room of doom AWA TV taping but none of the others that I can recall.
Buddy Rose was fired by Verne in 87 for working outlaw on the same show Debeers wound up fired for working on, but only Rose wasn't brought back. (Somers may have also been canned IIRC for the same show) Rose is here for the battle royal main event.

Bam Bam Bigelow, fresh off NWA TV is the ringer here in a mostly full of geeks. I wonder how Windy City and the PWF could afford him but the AWA never bothered?

Lady wrestler Ondy Austin works next and I'm pretty sure she made AWA TV as well. The Dazzler sounds familiar too. Fascinating to hear the announcers put over the women for working holds saying without saying that they were not Moolah trained.

The "Beach Boys" have total midwestern accents, which made me smile. I'm sold on their California roots!
They have a Big Bubba Rogers knock off gimmick. Plus a Sheik, which every promotion had to have on their roster after the hostage crisis of 79/80. They do the shindy version of Adnan buying Ken Patera from Heenan with their geeks here.

Mick Karch is on the call! Ahh cripes!

That 13 mins was way more fun that it had any right to be.

One of my favorite criticisms of Corny is his SMW match with Kowabunga. He always deflects it "it was for house shows and not on TV," or some other cop out bullshit, but it's great that the same dude who dogs on Excalibur for wearing a mask while on commentary has literal footage of him working against someone in a bad Ninja Turtle costume.

Isn't the rumor Champion was a diddler and used the costume to lure kids?

To be fair, the announcer is to sell the product and move tickets, so him being serious is/was a consideration to make. Meanwhile Corny vs the comedy gimmick was the 1993 version of Little Bruiser doing spots with Heenan in mixed matches.

I'm glad Bob Caudle ensured SMW's taping this week is a success.

Using a TMNT character was almost as out of touch with ‘93/‘94 as using a Danger Danger song for entrance theme for the Thrillseekers. Only aspect of 1994 pop culture that Jim Cornette had a thumb on the pulse of was the racism.

The racism was a specific request by Rick Rubin.

SMW is hilarious and Cornette's impact means less by the year (unless it's about building his own brand). Just good times all around.

Tony Khan is in business.
He's definitely down more money than Corny was.

Corny chose to quit the grind, he told Rubin he didn't want to run anymore, Rubin was willing to keep giving him the 10K a month (IIRC) or whatever to keep running. Rubin wanted the TV to watch. They kind of needed the house shows to keep the talent fed.

It is interesting to think if Corny holds out another 8 months or so until the wrestling biz stabilizes and maybe he could run just well enough to carry on. They never really did establish a draw other than the Rock and Roll Express and that card was largely played out after 3 years.

Establishing SMW as a real OVW type active training ground might have been interesting minus Vince's choices of talent would clash with what would work in SMW. Brakkus! Ron Waterman! Glen Kulka!

Memphis was only drawing decent with old fart reunion shows. Maybe Corny should have leaned even more into the 1979 main eventers like Memphis did? WCW sucked up Dick Slater, Robert Fuller, Jimmy Golden, Hector, etc

I wonder if Ricky Gibson had anything left in the tank? He was supposed to have been awesome until he was struck by a drunk in 1982 and seriously hurt. He retired in 87 while doing job duty under an assumed name for JCP.
Angry vet Rick comes out of his forced retirement pissy his brother made tons of money and scored all the pussy that should have been his!

Cornette quitting is worse than him failing, then. It's like getting military advice from a Confederate reenactor.

Thinking more on this and the AWF roster would have freshened SMW up and probably sold some tickets.
Sarge, Hammer (classic southern heel), Tony Atlas, Chris Adams, Koko (Memphis roots), Tom Brandi, Tom Zenk, Tito and Orton Jr.
Hayes and Garvin worked for them too. They could join up with Gordy in SMW as the new worst version of the Freebirds.

How did they not convince Stan Lane to come back for a one off to team with Keirn vs Del Ray and Dr. Tom?
