Through the Booking Glass: Year 1 Week 22

I am going to apologize for this being late.  With the holiday weekend (and the fact I didn’t get any time off work with said holiday weekend) I completely forgot to get this posted.  Hopefully this is worth this being a few hours late.

June 1983, Monday, Week 2

Southeastern Championship Wrestling has offered Bob Backlund a contract, but even if he signs he’s expected to give the WWF top priority.

Sgt. Slaughter signed a non-exclusive extension with Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling but he’ll still make most WWF shows.

Butcher Vachon has given his four week notice, refusing negotiations claiming he has outgrown the WWF.

According to inside sources, apparently Eddie Gilbert has walked out on Dick the Bruiser’s WWA promotion within the last 24 hours.  There are only sketchy rumors at the moment, but we’re hearing it was an explosive exit and Gilbert is not expected to return.

June 1983, Tuesday, Week 2

Ivan Koloff vs. Salvatore Bellomo has been added to next month’s show at the Philadelphia Spectrum.

Championship Wrestling taping (June 1983, Tuesday, Week 2)

Jimmy Snuka pinned Israel Matia with a flying headbutt off the top rope in 2:40.

The Masked Invaders defeated Johnny Rodz and Mac Rivera in 1:51 when Invader #2 pinned Rivera with a Heart Punch.

Don Kernodle defeated Nick DeCarlo in 3:02 by pinfall with a Piledriver.  These two didn’t click at all and it made for an awkward match.

Tito Santana was on Buddy Rogers’ Corner, and he said he was looking to become a champion and in particular was targeting the Intercontinental Title.  Almost a carbon copy of the last time Santana was on the show.

In a bout that had solid in-ring action and average heat, Samu and The Wild Samoans defeated Chief Jay Strongbow and Tony Garea & Eddie Gilbert in 6:04 when Samu pinned Eddie Gilbert with a Flying Headbutt.

Vince McMahon talked about Andre the Giant and how he has defeated wrestlers all around the world.  He hasn’t been following along with some of the other bookings Andre’s had outside the WWF.

In an extremely short match, Salvatore Bellomo defeated Rene Goulet in 4:26 by pinfall with a Pizza Splash.

Ivan Putski pinned Tiger Conway Jr. in 4:25 with a Polish Hammer.

Iron Mike Sharpe pinned S.D. Jones in 2:05 with a Running Forearm Smash.

Vince McMahon interviewed Bob Backlund at ringside.  Backlund vowed that he was going to make Slaughter pay for the beating he took on TV with the riding crop a few weeks ago.

Superstar Billy Graham defeated Pedro Morales in 1:23 by submission to a full nelson.  After the match, Pat Patterson interviewed Graham who cut one of his classic promos putting himself over.

June 1983, Wednesday, Week 2

The show in Allentown last night drew a full house of 1,300.

Southeastern Championship Wrestling has made Tony Atlas a contract offer that would allow him to keep most of his WWF dates.

Ivan Koloff had his shoulder injury checked out and has been told he is now 100%.

June 1983, Thursday, Week 2

The WWF just announced an unusual tag team match for the next show at the Spectrum next month, as the Invaders will face Mr. Fuji and Frankie Williams.

June 1983, Friday, Week 2

Former NWA World Heavyweight Champion Whipper Billy Watson, 68, has officially retired and will be leaving the business altogether.  In an interview, Watson said he loves the wrestling business but at his age he wants to take on a few different endeavors before it’s too late.

Billy Jack Haynes defeated Curt Hennig in Alaska last night to win the Pacific Northwest Heavyweight Championship. Hennig did not make a successful title defense during his title reign.

June 1983, Saturday, Week 2

Penny Mitchell, 40, has officially retired from in-ring competition but will remain on with the WWF as a road agent.

June 1983, Sunday, Week 2

Freddie Blassie has officially retired from the wrestling business.  Blassie has had a long history of knee problems and has been having problems even making the drives to some of the towns, which is the catalyst for his retirement.

Joey Marella is in his final month of his contract but is expected to be re-signed.  Supposedly the WWF has offered him a 10 year deal.

TV ratings held steady for Championship Wrestling this week.
