GADD on E3 – Ubisoft Edition

Hello everyone and welcome back to GADD! I’ve come back home from my latest assignment JUST in time for E3, I literally got home around 9 PM last night, so I decided why not do an article every press conference going on today, and the fake press conference by Nintendo tomorrow? Next up is Ubisoft, and I’m even less sure what I’m going to see out of them than I was EA. More footage of AC Unity of course and Far Cry 4, but other than those two, it’s a complete toss up. Are they ready for a new Rayman yet? Or a new Rabbids game? I imagine there will be some time wasted on Your Shape. Other than that, no clue. Let’s start off by simply discussing every game shown in the conference, and my personal level of interest in them.

SO DAMN HYPE I WANT NOW:

Valiant Hearts – Oh man I completely forgot that this is a Ubi game.  I’m already really interested in this game pre-E3, making a super dramatic WWI adventure/puzzle game?   Yes please!  This is one of the few times that I’m  fine with a trailer not showing much gameplay because as a puzzle game, gameplay would just be a giant spoiler for the game itself.  It did a great job setting the tone for the game and just makes me even more ready to download it when it comes out in 2 weeks.  Expect to see this in a GADD near you soon.   Also, expect me to be sad when the dog dies, because that’s TOTALLY fucking happening.

Assassin’s Creed: Unity – Already shown off once at the XBox press conference, and it piqued my interest, but also had me cautious as to whether or not multiplayer story mode was really a good thing or not.    At first I was annoyed that they were showing a trailer with no gameplay whatsoever, but then they followed it up with an on stage gameplay demo, but single player only.   The crowd still looks really damn good at least, and the quests appear to be picked up more dynamically this time which is cool even if it likely won’t be a big game changer.  It still looks VERY much like the same Assassin’s Creed game you’ve been playing since 2, but it looks a whole lot more refined and definitely has my interest.  I’m gonna put it in the SO DAMN HYPE category because the second showing was better than the first, but it’s just barely hanging in the top tier.

Need more information first:

The Crew – I was actually really looking forward to this game when it was announced last year, but then the delay happened and my interest waned.  The trailer did a good job showing off different environments as you travel across the country, but it all just looked too casual of a drive.   And holy shit, developer talks about 2+ hour missions in the game as you have to drive across country.  When was the last time a driving game had a 2 hour challenge?  Endurance races in Gran Turismo?  I’m just glad there’s a release date, November 11th, but let’s see if there’s another delay.  I still feel as if I’m likely to pick this up when it comes out, but I’m not sold as much as I once was.

Rainbow Six: Siege – I was ready to write this off as a generic boring FPS when it first started up, but man that multiplayer match inside the house looked REALLY damn intense.  Too bad I know no actual multiplayer matchup will be that well organized or that strategic.  You know it’ll just quickly devolve into everyone running around on their own trying to shoot anything that moves.  If, and that’s a BIG if, it comes out and people are actually playing like they were in the demo, I’d definitely be interested.

HAVE NO FUCKS TO GIVE:

Just Dance 2015 – Holy shit this is still a thing?  WHO IS BUYING THESE?  That big onstage dance sequence to show off the fact that you can play now so long as you have a smartphone was just freaking embarrassing.

The Division – I went into this hoping they would prove me wrong and show me how this game plans to set itself apart from every other squad based cover shooter out there, and while it was a really good looking trailer, and did a great job setting a mood that may or may not actually carry into the game (hello Dead Island!) there was no actual gameplay in the video, so it didn’t do enough to get me to change my opinion on the game.

Shape Up – Oh look, Ubi is making yet another fitness game. Is it just a rebranded Your Shape? They’re claiming to make it feel more like a video game, so you won’t be bored while working out. It’s not a good sign when the first workout mini-game they show is just a blatant DDR ripoff where you’re stepping on piano keys, but it’s totally just freaking DDR. But at least a ripoff version of DDR is still a game, the second mini game was just a flat out pushup game with “wacky” graphics of something on your back. Sorry, that doesn’t make it feel like you’re playing a game. That just makes you feel stupid, which despite Ubi’s continued E3 efforts, aren’t the same thing.

Overall this is the highest percentage of games I care about vs games I don’t, but it’s REALLY hard to call it a good press conference due to the horrible banter, the embarrassing dance sequence, and the constant need to try and feel hardcore with all their ridiculously forced sounding swearing.   You can’t tell Ubi what to do, dad!  You just don’t understand them!  They’re a rebel, you’ll see!  Believe me, I totally get the irony of my complaining about their swearing with all of it that I do in GADD, but holy crap nobody on that stage sounded natural when they were doing it.  Next up is the last conference of the night, Sony’s PlayStation conference.  It’s the one I’m looking forward to the most, but I can also see them wasting way too much time bragging about how they’re kicking the XBox’s ass and not enough time showing video games.
