Vintage Independent Wrestling Thread: Discuss the Stars of Today Yesterday When They Were Stars of Tomorrow

A sleazy promoter trying to get Slater to quit school and join the big leagues. Episode ends with the evil champion trying to intimidate him but he gets stepped on by Screech or something and bursts into tears and runs away.
 
He spends half the show trying to get Jessie to sleep with him as well. The big reveal is that Mr. Belding moonlights as a luchador on the weekends and they have a loser leaves school blowoff in the bayside gym for some reason.

Did Eaton ever appear in TNA? I can't recall. Would have been fun to get a washed Eaton to do some SD! stuff, ala Finley's career resurgence.

Sadly before my time at the indies. We had a Taker/Kane KO gimmick of Sam Hayne, who was a HOSS who wore a bull/devil mask and breathed fire. He was around near the top for years. He and Jack Berzerker are 2 guys I'm most surprised never got at least a TNA run when Mr Kennedy, Diavari, Swoggle and others came from our league

How the hell is Kevin Steen vs. Super Dragon from Astonishing X-Mas not the highest ranked PWG match? It's better than the Super Dragon/Excalibur match that's rated near the top in every possible way.
 
I wish a big heel run had happened for them. It could've been a lot of fun.
 
I really don't know where Morton would fit in 1995 ECW. Like I want to believe Raven lackey Ricky is a possibility but I doubt that was the intention.
 
Yeah maybe he would have basically done what Prichard and Del Ray did in late 95 ECW but don't think Heyman goes in that direction.
 
9/3/93: The NWA convention was held in Las Vegas, NV, consisting of Jim Crockett, Dennis Coraluzzo, Steve Rickard, Bob Trobich, and Paul Heyman. During the convention, Tod Gordon (of ECW), was accepted as a member while Jim Cornette’s application was tabled since they wanted to make sure Smoky Mountain Wrestling would recognize the NWA World Champion, rather than the WWF World Champion Yokozuna, who Cornette managed. Discussion also surrounded the future of the NWA World Championship, with members approving of the planned title change to Rick Rude at Fall Brawl, under the stipulation Rude would later drop the title at a NWA house show to a person of their choosing.

Hilarious they tried to pretend they had any clout with the big boys.

I would suspect at least Heyman and maybe Coraluzzo were hoping WCW would give them a cash settlement to go away.

Crockett still had family ties within WCW, but was too dumb to quit trying to mettle instead of getting a gig as the local promoter in some JCP hotbed.
 

Austin was in ECW while SMW was in hospice, so its kind of a goofy question.

Corny kind of ignores how Austin doing the shooty promos were part of the ECW vibe, which SMW never tried to establish nationally.

I followed all of it 6 or 8 weeks behind in the Apters. I may have seen Austin on WWF TV before I read about his ECW exploits

I wouldn't say Corny ignored it, but he kinda glossed over it by saying ECW's audience expected good promos and SMW's just wanted the babyfaces to win.

Corny and Brian aren't far off from talking about Austin wrestling in ECW, though. He only worked two matches, losing both (vs. Mikey Whipwreck, vs. Sandman vs. Mikey Whipwreck), before signing to the WWF.
 
Austin wouldn't have worked in SMW. I just can't see it. Like in ECW the vibe was clearly just waiting until he could go to the WWF so he put guys over and delivered amazing promos. I don't see Cornette wanting that mindset and I don't see any SMW guys deserving of the unique rub he had at the time.
 
Moved over to some IWCCW last night. May restart ECW from the beginning.
 
Watched a little bit of TWA last night. It's insane how they hit the ECW vibe almost immediately. I figured it'd be more akin to the Gilbert ECW feel but man, it took ECW a couple years to hit the sense of organized chaos TWA just apparently had by default. Gotta investigate further.
