Really? Part of me wanted jerseys of Orr and Forsberg in powder blue. I guess there's not quite the same hatred between Philly-Baltimore, but....really?
I have a respect for most geographical rivals. I'll support the Pirates, Orioles etc. as long as they don't compete with my team.

Oh, and this old Orioles logo is terrible.

Are you kidding? It looks like a minstrel actor wearing blackface. I'm glad the realistic bird is used.

I believe this tirade answers my "Does Marvin post here still?" thought aloud of last week.

Who? And 2 sentences isn't quite a tirade to me but ok.

Now for a new feature: Why Did They Change Their Logo?

19435259334910336636.jpg

Alright, so it's old-fashioned, and maybe even a little quaint. But it's a classic logo, and made for one of the best caps in baseball. I guess the thing about teams that don't use standard city/team initials in their logos is that they see the need to update them more often. The Orioles changed their bird a bunch of times, and made it better, so the Blue Jays can do it too, right?

11884002717347590712.jpg

But this...looks like a football logo. The CFL, or some minor league. It's angry. Baseball isn't an angry sport. How many teams with mascots or other characters try to depict them as fearsome and aggresive? Most of them, like the Cub, Devil Ray, Cardinal, etc., are just kinda standing around, just like one would do at an actual game. Just chill, little birdy, and enjoy the game.

I think eventually they're going to go back to the old logo but use the new colours.

061215_toronto_blue_jays_logo.jpg

I don't really mind the cap logo all that much (it's better than the lame, stylized 'T' that they use on their alternate/BP caps), but the whole logo with the 'Jays' wordmark is really lame. I think they originally wanted to drop the 'Blue' from the official name, so thankfully we avoided that.

Why Did They Change Their Logo?

rays.gif

Alright, the Devil Ray logo may not be a classic, but it was at least unique. The newer devil ray logos were getting better. Alas, the team itself was terrible. The majority of their existence has been a disaster, but you can't just wipe it all away in one year and expect the whole franchise to get better.

Alright, so maybe that's exactly what happened, but still, if you're going to change your identity, at least do it well.

hattq.jpg

This is not good. Without the devil ray, it's very bland, and the letters don't even interlock! I thought it's a baseball rule that multiple letters on a hat must always interlock in some clever fashion. Very uninspired. And what is a "ray?" I'm assuming it's supposed to be a ray of healthy Florida sunshine, but they don't even get that playing in a dome!

And there's a bigger point at hand: the colors. Baseball has a bad habit of overdoing it with the red/blue-centered colour schemes. I can't be bothered with looking up the numbers, but probably 80 percent of the teams have one of those two colors as their main ones. So what does this team do when they decide to give themselves an image makeover? A generic navy blue. Boring. Way to break the mold, guys. The only interesting fashion statement this team makes is Joe Maddon and his hoodie hipster glasses.

Too many teams use navy blue with light blue. Mark Cuban started this trend; blame him. The Rays do look pretty stupid and cheap, though, yeah. I think they had to get rid of the rainbow uniforms because the gradients were too hard to embroider.

Just because of those assholes, they should have changed the name to the Tampa Bay Devil Satans. Makes no sense, but fuck those highly sensitive assholes. They ruin everything.

Why Did They Change Their Logo?

I know that there is history behind this one, and it's certainly selling very well with the newfound popularity of the team, but come on. "Twins Cities" isn't even a part of the name of the team. A logo that could be confusing at first to youngsters and foreigners is not a good way to represent your team.

And that's not even the worst part: the C is a complete rip-off of the Reds! The went all Chicago Bears with this one and decided to be unoriginal. It's not hard to make a decent, unique C, the Rockies and Angels have done it. Away with this one! Back to the M!

The M alienates people from the St. Paul side because it could stand for "Minneapolis," and apparently this is a big deal. "Twin Cities" is explicitly inclusive. I'll give you that the TC monogram itself looks crappy, but it's not beyond repair. I don't find that M hat aesthetically pleasing at all.

In honor of Grant Hill finally making it to the 2nd round of the playoffs...a flashback to the teal-era Pistons!

Also, the oft-forgotten maroon alternates.

And finally, the 1995 red alternates.

Why Did They Change Their Logo?

SD_PADRES-NAVYWH.jpg

I don't know what the Padres are doing. Maybe they though they were standing out too much, and wanted to conform with the majority of the league as they became more of an irrelevant franchise. "We're too different! We need to change!!"

padreshatold.jpg

By changing their look from the unique brown-based scheme to the traditional crap-based scheme, the Padres have earned their way onto the list of teams who robbed themselves of a cool identity. The Mighty Ducks and Devil Rays are on that list. Looking at a page of former logos, the Padres seem to be changing it every other year, each one farther away from the original. Wearing brown was pretty clever. After all, that's what the actual missionaries wore! Imagine that! Now they've willingly sunken into the purgatory of the navy blue hat, bland uniform universe. The poor Padres. I will pray for them.

Here's an excellent update to the Golden State Warriors. Good new faux-throwback logo, decent colors and uniforms.

http://www.nba.com/warriors/news/warriors_unveil_new_logo_061710.html

The Clippers were supposed to get an update, as well. Something was leaked that looked exactly like the old logo, with extremely minor changes. This better not be a disappointment. Everything about that Warriors update, not just the logo, but the website and press release, is so professional. The Clippers are capable of that, right?

I know this won't be a popular opinion but I can't stand the North Stars' logo.

minnesotanorthstarsjers.jpg

This one is so revered, and I can't figure it out. The actual jersey design is fine, and I love the colors, but the logo itself is crap. The piece of N sticking out in the upper left is awkward, the whole thing is crooked and weird, and the arrow pointing up is cheesy. I don't get it.

NOW we're talking. This is something to get nostalgic about.

I'd be the first to go to bat for the North Stars.......but the nostalgia of the Seals (I feel) supersedes.

If you're going to complain about the North Stars logo, why not the fact that it looks like the Golden Seal is nothing more than a trophy with a seal head attached.

Yeah, but even if it's indecipherable, the Golden Seal still makes for an attractive picture. I probably wouldn't have guessed that it's a seal, but it looks nice.

I found this yesterday and it made me feel so much better about myself (that I didn't waste my money on a fictional character.)
