Affliction folds as an MMA promotion

Affliction III

AHAHAHAHA

Man they're stupid. Although this does suck for North American MMA, leaving us with just Strikeforce vs UFC basically

And Josh Barnett sinks an entire promotion.

I'm with EHME, I'm hoping they can figure out a way to shift some of these fights on to Strikeforce somehow.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Affliction gives out contracts on a fight by fight basis, right? Why not just export Fedor/Barnett to Japan after the 1st and throw it on a DREAM or Sengoku card since they don't give a shit about steroids over there. I'm probably not reading the fine print somewhere, just thought I'd throw this random thought out there.

Barnett may still want to fight in the United States sometime in the future. If he gets suspended and fights in Japan anyway, he may never get licensed in the US ever again. Especially since its the 2nd time he has pissed hot

Kevin Iole is reporting that an Affliction-Strikeforce merger may be coming:

"Affliction itself is fighting simply for survival. Several sources have said that Affliction and Strikeforce will have some type of merger with Strikeforce retaining its name. Affliction’s Tom Atencio denied any merger is imminent, and Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker is in Italy on vacation and couldn’t be reached for comment.

However, two independent sources told Yahoo! Sports a deal is either completed or on the verge of completion."

Edit, nm.

Wasn't there a few names thrown around for a replacement for Barnett, like Monson or Rogers? Why cancel the event when there is a week or so left to hype a new opponent?

LULZ, Barnett killed a promotion.

Well, this is what happens when a company is paying someone like Terry Martin 70 Grand for a fight.

Kevin Iole is reporting that the Affliction/Strikeforce merger is OFF and that Affliction will fold back into the UFC as a clothing sponsor.

It's still unknown what happens to fighter contracts.

I don't mind Martin making 70k, as all fighters should be making 20k and above. But Sylvia and Arlovski getting that much is a joke.

I'm not against guys getting paid, but they were overpaying like money didn't matter. 250k for Ben Rothwell. That's honestly ten times what the UFC would have paid. Think about that. They were overpaying guys who had little to no demand.

Figure I'd bust it out for the death of Affliction. To bad, if they would have focused more on becoming a solid alternative promotion like Strikeforce and not try and take out the UFC right away, they would still be around.

I hope the fighters get spread out evenly and not just straight into the UFC. DREAM needs to add some depth so hopefully they add something to their promotion out of this.

Vitor's definitely coming back to the UFC. That one seems like a sure thing. The worst thing that could come of this is Strikeforce messing up their financial structure to get in on this action. Hopefully they don't fuck themselves up in a rush to sign big name fighters.

This is WWE/WCW all over again, isn't it? We're gonna have Tito/Babalu as a main event, it's gonna suck donkey balls, and there'll be a botched "invasion" angle with the IFL joining forces with the Affliction remnant...

I think I need some sleep...

This may have been reported already in this thread, but apparently they had only sold between 2,000-3,000 tickets to the Affliction show total (according to the MMA talk show on HDNet), so there was serious worry there, plus Showtime was the financial arm of the pay per view show and was balking hard at wanting to go forward with the show as well. With that said, I guess it makes sense why it was cancelled, but it's still a bit of a shock, all the same. Especially now seeing how its turned to them just becoming another UFC sponsor again. Damn.

There were rumors of this show not happening before Josh failed his pisser. Affliction has been spending like no tomorrow and they were probably happy to get a reason to cancel over.

Word is Dana is going to have a huge press conference next Friday where a bunch of announcements will be made, including possibly what happens to the Affliction fighters, etc. Obviously Fedor will come up.

It's also rumored that he's going to announce Tito/Franklin for UFC 103... as it appears Henderson/Franklin 2 has been canceled.
