I'm having an issue with my PC. For some reason it keeps locking up every once in awhile. I can't seem to find out exactly what the issue is. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason, there's no virus or malware or adware that is causing it as I've checked those issues. Just re-installed my latest video drivers, but that doesn't seem be it either.

Hard drive is fully defragged, I've removed any old programs I'm not using...

Any ideas what else it could be that I'm missing? This is pissing me off. I would like to use my own PC. Not borrow someone else's.

Dont suppose you use Firefox do you? I was having the same problem and was considering reformatting my system. On a whim, I started using Chrome and it hasn't happened since.

I mostly use Firefox yes, but I was having issues with another browser. I'll switch full time though and see what happens. Maybe that's just Fox still running in the background having a laugh at my expense.

Thanks for the advice.

Doing a quick search it seems like he's on the money with the Firefox tip. Lots of people reporting problems with Windows 7 and 8 with Firefox.

Smues says: no matter what the problem, it could ALWAYS somehow be the fault of your RAM. Remembering that has saved me a lot kf troubleshooting time in the past, and forgetting it has cost me a lot of time. Do you have a spare stick you can swap out and see if that fixes the problem?

If you want to check if your RAM is faulty, you can use this program:
http://www.memtest.org/
You download a bootable version of the program (floppy, USB, etc.) Turn off the computer and remove every stick of RAM except for one. Boot the computer with MEMTest and let it run for 10 - 20 mins. If nothing comes up, the stick is fine and you can turn off the computer and test the next stick. If the program starts ()*$)(*#&)#&%)#&%#*()&, then your RAM is bad.

Another thing you might consider is the machine overheating. Make sure it has proper ventilation and that the fans (CPU, Power Supply) are working. I had a video card fan die on me and the video card would crash while playing certain games.

Yeah, definitely has proper venting, because I barely get over 30. But I'll definitely take a look at the RAM issue. Thanks for that. Think I didn't. Would suck though if my RAM is faulty.

If you bought the RAM, most manufacturers have a lifetime warranty. I've had a few bad sticks and got them replaced no problem.

One other thing, it could be your power supply. They do go bad after 5+ years.

So I have a computer that still works and works really well. It runs off Windows Vista. I bought it in 2008.
A friend of mine told me I should look into getting a new computer because "these things don't last forever and this one can crash on you any day!" I did replace the power supply recently because it went out, but I've had no other problems.

He's full of shit right? I'm like an old man when it comes to a lot of technology and I don't want to have to learn Windows 8 (since that will come on a new computer) if I don't have to.

Hypothetically the HD could crash one day. I've had that happen a few times. I had one motherboard die on me and it took more than eight years for that to happen.

If you're happy with it for what you use it for, I wouldn't buy something just because it might fail. I've had new sticks of RAM be faulty and some computers last for almost a decade.

HD's also but those and RAM are fairly inexpensive to replace.

A brand new computer (or hard drive) could fail just as easily as an old one. Unless your old machine is overheating or is experiencing massive techincal issues, then your friend is full of shit.

BTW, thanks guys. Wasn't a RAM issue, so looks like my PC just does not like Firefox (been using Chrome since). So thanks for the help.

Though that sucks, because I like Firefox. I haven't really used Chrome a lot (or at all). Does anyone know if there is an adblock function on it?

The hoops you need to jump through to transfer music from an IPod to a computer are ridiculous. Fuck you, Apple.

Yes. I bemoaned this to a friend last week. He's still teasing me about how I paid for Limewire in 2006 (Yes, I paid for Limewire), but he conceded "Third-party apps to get songs off my Ipod? I dunnnnnnnnnoooooooooo". My Ipod's starting to age, and I, too, am petrified of using a third-party app to get anything off my Ipod onto my PC (all the songs I'd downloaded were on my old PC). So, I may just write down every band and/or album on my current Ipod and re-download them. I should have this taken care of by November. Of 2017.

A Bit hold, but if you show hidden folders its possible to find all the stored MP3s of the ipod in them, just copy and paste to a new folder somewhere, only downside is they are not named properly (more like A836gdhdh), but with the right ID tags that Ipods use, it shouldnt make a difference to the new ipod/itunes

There are programs that will do that for you. They'll save the file names and everything. I don't think there's a free one anywhere, but there's always Pirate Bay for that.

I think the headphone jack on my tablet is going. I only get sound from one ear and sometimes even that cuts out and I have to wiggle the cord. I hope it isn't much to fix because I'm not buying a whole new tablet.

Edit: I just plugged in my charger and it's back to normal. Weird.

If you have Bing coming up as your search engine or making your default home page Bing when you've clearly got something else as your main page, the culprit is a program called Search Project from a company called Conduit. The program changes overwrites whatever you have for those to Bing.

I must've not been paying attention when installing a different program. Stupid me.

I'm sure Microsoft is making you take it with the system. It's on my 360 and I don't want or need it.

Why are nVidia's big behemoth video cards only capable of SLI? I don't want to put two bulky cards in my case because they won't fit and it would really mess up the air flow.

All of a sudden within the past 3 days, my Wi-Fi has taken a shit. My wired connection is a solid 60 mbps but my Wi-Fi speed barely tops 15. I've reset the router and the modem who knows how many times. I'm not sure what else to try. I'm sure a wireless router eventually goes bad just like any other piece of hardware but I don't know how to tell if that's the problem.

Could be signal interference. Look at what channels the other signals you can pick up are and switch your router to an unused or low used one.

Or just be happy that shit for you is almost 4 times faster than I can get from my ISP.

Whoever the idiot was in 1991 that thought having a hulk hogan 110mm camera that had a Hulk Hogan shirt ripping picture in the corner of every photo is getting on my nerves right now.

Playing around with my recently gifted Epson Perfection V550 developing old 110 film and yeah. Hogan in every God damn picture. Current crop has the redneck boy my older sister met on our 1992 summer vacation which means my recently dead Grandma is bound to be in these pics.

Getting photobombed by the Hulkster, brother.
