Didn't see that finish coming at all. Thought Kovalev was winning the fight.

But yeah if you get hit low 3 or 4 times and the referee doesn't give you an 8 count, I dunno.

Re: Boxing 2016-2017 Thread

Hague died. RIP

I watched the clip of the final minute of the fight, it's on youtube. The ref is kind of in the way and the camera angle isn't great.....it's kind of a quick uppercut I think that put him out. I've seen way more brutal looking KO's....but I guess he'd been taking hard shots all fight and shouldn't have been in there in the first place.

Edmonton's athletic commission deserves a lot of blame here. From all accounts Hague should not have been cleared with all his concussions (that's why he was no longer in UFC) and recent TKOs

Also, the guy was a 4th grade English teacher and by all accounts a great guy. This is so sad

Re: Boxing 2016-2017 Thread

ESPN is airing major fights for the first time in at least a decade. Pacquaio tries to resurrect his box officeabilty tonight. Back to back cards on Fri/Sat August 5/6 with Vasyl Lomachenko headlining on the 6th. The Terence Crawford-Julius Indongo unification fight is on Aug 19.

Deadspin posted an article today making fun of big fights happening on ESPN rather than HBO, Showtime, or ppv (apparently out of the same mouth that also pokes fun at major ppv events). I disagree. I think boxing has needed to get back to more cable/network fights for several years. I'm biased because I want to watch more boxing. But I do think that PBC airing on networks and cable, Golden Boy doing more ESPN dates, and now Top Rank moving their big names to ESPN is good for boxing.

Not a robbery IMO, but a great fight and a close one. Decision given to the wrong man.

Not the worst robbery. But they got it wrong. When one score read 117-111 I thought Manny for sure won it. Bad decision. Fun fight.

Mikey Garcia definitely looks like a pound for pound level fighter, but I think 140 and 147 might be too much weight for him. At lower weights none of his opponents could take those punches.

Top five pound for pound Vasyl Lomachenko fights on ESPN tomorrow. I strongly recommend watching it. The undercard bout with Ray Beltran should be good too.

Not sure who all pays attention to women's boxing, but Gold medalist Claressa Shields just beat the brakes off the current champ to win the title.

Here is a 4 minute sparring session she did with Cyborg Santos.

Re: Boxing 2016-2017 Thread

Top Rank signed a four year deal to do shows exclusively on ESPN or ESPN PPV, and while announcing that, they said Pac will fight Horn again on November 11th. Lomachenko will probably fight Rigondeaux on December 9th.

For those in Canada all those Top Rank shows will be on TSN.

Boxing doesn't even try and make it look legit anymore with the judges. Vegas took all that money tonight.

Yeah. I was shocked he didn't start f-bombing. He was livid.

People gambling on fights in either sport that they think will end with a decision is what built all the casinos. 100% true.

And I strongly recommend nobody here does that.

My buddy did. He had a parlay on GGG & KO so it was as bad as a solo bet, but you are 100% right. This screamed stay away for lots of reasons.

Re: Boxing 2016-2017 Thread

Pretty bad. I had it 9-3, with Canelo winning 2, 3, and 12.

Re: Boxing 2016-2017 Thread

There were a few swing rounds at the beginning and end of the fight that I thought could have gone to Canelo, but Gennady was so dominant in the middle portion of the fight that I don't see how anyone couldn't give him rounds 4-10. I thought Canelo had the better looking shots (talking about 3 or 4 nice ones) but he was back pedaling the entire fight and was too content to stay on the ropes and wait for a counter-strike that was rarely available. The times he did land it looked good, but when Gennady is aggressively jabbing you to death and hitting a couple of good shots on his own for seven straight rounds, I don't see how you can say Canelo won the round, let alone the fight.

Re: Boxing 2016-2017 Thread

And Adelaide Byrd shouldn't even be allowed to serve drinks in an arena, let alone judge another match. 909 is right that this was probably an inside job and everyone but the fighters and their camps were in on it. You know everyone got a piece of this pie. You could probably build a house with the bricks of cash that they banked off of this fight.

Unlike Williams in Lewis-Holyfield, wasn't this like Byrd's 100th rodeo?
