Hey! Me and my friend Nic started a classic rock podcast. Each week, we take a look back at a Billboard Rock Chart (from any time from the inception of the Mainstream Rock Chart in 1981 to 2012 when Spotify became prominent way to listen to music) and discuss the songs.

On the first episode, we count down the first Billboard Rock Chart from March 20th, 1981. So if you want to hear me and my friend Nic ramble about classic rock that fuckin sucks from 1981, here ya go.

Oh shit. If I can't listen on the plane home, I will when I get back.

I have no idea how much regular plays it really gets but local radio has busted out "Temporary Secretary" by Paul McCartney and I can't believe that shit is real. It's awful, but man I wish I could've gotten drunk and listened to Devo with Sir Paul way back.

This is somewhat ironic to me since I always used the first Billboard Rock Chart as the dividing line between "classic" rock and more contemporary rock, as it started to branch out into different styles and variations by this time.

Yeah, it is kind of interesting. Cause I think the era we're talking about on the podcast is the long, slow, and often sad decline of classic rock.

We have couple episodes in the vault already and boy howdy, the ones in the late '80s/early '90s are pretty grim with the stars of the '60s and '70s attempts to stay relevant.

Late 80s/Early 90s rock was HORRID. Thankfully, the alternative boom was right around the corner.

do you have a subscription to billboard pro? Otherwise, I can't access those lists.

That last comment kind of ties into just of my podcast is how our perception of the past DOESN'T reflect on Billboard Rock Charts. Hair metal made very little impact and the only time Nirvana hit #1 on the Mainstream Rock Charts was with "You Know You're Right", almost a decade after Cobain died.

I think it's because some stations were slow to incorporate the alternative boom into their playlists. By that time (mid-90s), bands like Pearl Jam and STP were at the top of the heap.

Dave Matthews Band fans threaten to riot if the band doesn't make the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame on first ballot.

I don't want to know what a DMB superfan induced riot looks like but I imagine it ends with Cleveland smelling worse than it already does.

I stand by it. Terrible. Lacks the balls the Fabulous Thunderbirds have.

I have relatives that live in Charlottesville so they're massive DMB superfans (I think they're too passive to participate in any sort of Cleveland soy latte riot though). My aunt snuck an embarrassing photo of Dave Matthews mid situp at the gym ;D ;D ;D

This year's Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Inductees; Depeche Mode, The Doobie Brothers, Whitney Houston, Nine Inch Nails, The Notorious BIG and T. Rex.

They're going to have a hell of a time figuring out what to play at the all star jam at the end...

I'm glad T. Rex got in and I think NIN are about as deserving as it gets for non grunge '90s rock bands but we are clearly now in the "Sure. Why not?" era of RNR Hall of Fame inductees.

Not a song I think sucks (on the contrary, in fact) but "Black Hole Sun" has been getting played more and more frequently on my local classic rock station.

Has there been a more instantly dated music video than this?

I mean Def Leppard thought they could show up in the middle of the peak of grunge with Joe Elliot wearing epaulets and really crappy CGI and have everyone saying "This rocks!"

Adrenalize was a big hit, though. It went #1 and 3x platinum. I know that's a big drop from Hysteria but still, many other bands fell harder. I've only listened to it once and don't really remember any of the songs besides "Let's Get Rocked." I know there's a song called "Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad" that was a big hit and I swear I don't know what it sounds like.

"Let's Get Rocked" was a cult favorite among my friends and I as this bar we shot pool at was guaranteed to play it at least once per visit.
