US Approaching Potentially Dire Situation Nationally

"Only five states are seeing a decrease of at least 10% in average new daily cases over the past week. And the US set a record for the highest single day of new cases for the second time this week with 66,627 cases on Friday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

All people who study these viruses think that the summer is the quiet time. Think about that. This is the quiet time for coronavirus," Dr. William Haseltine, a former professor at Harvard Medical School, told CNN on Friday. "If this is the quiet time, I hate to think what winter is going to be like this year."

"Georgia set a record for the number of new cases in one day on Friday with 4,484 new cases ... The Louisiana Department of Health reported 2,642 new cases Friday, making it the highest day of new cases since the pandemic began."

"Jannette Desmond, owner of Kilwins Chocolate, Fudge and Ice Cream Shoppe in Portsmouth, expressed her frustration over unruly customers.

“I hate it,” Desmond said. “I absolutely can’t stand it and I feel – I employ a lot of young kids, 16, 17, 18-year-olds and they shouldn’t have to be dealing with somebody who’s kind of a little rude."

While Becksted does not think mandating masks is necessary now, he said he will support a resolution that is expected to be discussed at a city council meeting Monday night to create a stronger ask of the community to wear them.

LOL... Yeah, saying, "Hey, folks. I just really want you to wear masks," is totally gonna work instead of the previous, "Hey, folks. I'd like it if you could wear masks." That kind of reasoning is one of the stupidest things to make because it's common sense that it won't work and politicians use it to scapegoat the enforcers while just waving their hands up and shrugging their shoulders.

At my hotel working Saturday evening/night, people would go through the lobby not wearing masks and even come up to the front desk without them. I didn't have it in me to argue about it tbh and I can only imagine what a 16-19 year old teen thinks about having to spend each work day arguing with customers.

I've read so many horror stories about people being rude to part time teenage service workers during this pandemic. If you can't manage to be polite in public, order online.

They're liberal about everything except parking spaces. It's everything strongly like and dislike about Portland in a condensed, bougier form.

(SORRY FOR SIDETRACKING THE THREAD FOR A NEW ENGLAND DISCUSSION)

Much of Ontario is now moving to Stage 3 allowing places like restaurants, theaters, gyms, etc. to open although there are still capacity limits. The GTA, Windsor, Hamilton, and Niagara are staying in Stage 2 for now. But things are getting to the point where I'm feeling pretty good with our numbers. Most places here don't have any cases or they are in the single digits for total active cases.

My only real concern at the moment is the border. Keep the Americans out! The numbers down there are horrid. I really fear loosening the restrictions will cause a major spike.

Well, I'm in RI and they have been re-opening things for well over a month now and there have been no spikes, and the same goes for MA and NY, so let's not lump all of America into one pool :)

MA posted 203 (or 205) new cases of Coronavirus, which is concerning considering that the state has been between 150-170 for most of the past several weeks.

Oh boy...

Trump Administration Changes Data Collection From CDC to HHS

"Some former health officials worry the move could result in less transparent data, although they acknowledged in interviews that the CDC’s data collection system is outdated and doesn’t meet the demands of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The agency, which oversees the CDC, Food and Drug Administration and other U.S. health agencies, will now collect daily Covid-19 reports directly. That includes the number of hospitalized patients, available beds and medical equipment like ventilators as well as information used to organize the U.S. pandemic response."

MA Sees 218 Confirmed Cases

A little concerning to see the numbers getting higher as this is the 2nd time in a week or so where cases have gone above the 200 mark after roughly a month of being well under that number. Yet the 7 Day Average continues to be dropping, which I kind of find hard to believe if we're getting confirmed cases over 200... the way this is all being reported is just confusing in general because it's not even clear if the confirmed cases are just for that day or cover X number of weeks or if they even include probable cases from prior days.

"In Florida, where daily new cases have tripled in a month, the governor has resisted implementing a mandate and said the state would not be prosecuting people who don't wear face coverings.

But in the city of Miami, officials are doubling down on an existing mask order. Starting Monday, residents who fail to wear a face mask in public will be fined without first getting a warning. That fine starts at $50 and will increase at every additional offense."

- Los Angeles reported the highest number of hospitalizations in a day, with at least 2,216 people hospitalized. More than half of the 2,848 new cases reported Sunday in Los Angeles were in people under 41 years old, officials said.
- Georgia reported 4,688 new cases for a total of 139,880 statewide while North Carolina reported 2,522 new cases, reaching 98,092 infections across the state.
- In Florida, a state that has broken its own single-day case record several times in recent weeks, there were at least 49 hospitals with no ICU beds available Sunday, according to data from a state agency.

I think the toothpaste is already out of the tube. Requiring masks, social distancing, and reducing crowds is probably easier than closing everything down again at this point.

I wouldn't put too much thought into the daily positive case numbers as the reporting of those doesn't seem consistent day to day. They may be compiling tests from multiple days and releasing the results over time. There was a 3 day strech in May where MA reported 664, 3840, and 358 from May 31 through June 2. That's a one time thing looking at the graph but it shows something funky went on, and I highly doubt they suddenly had one day where 3840 people were positively tested that day and only 664 and 358 the day before and after, and since then it's been lower and lower.
