Dwayne Johnson shows up late and pees in bottles.

In what will come as a shock to nobody, Red One is getting bad reviews. I was going to post this in the bad movies thread, but I decided to do so here because 1.) some critics particularly seem to take umbrage with Dwayne's performance (or as the Guardian puts it: "bronto-head Dwayne Johnson weighs down Santa kidnap comedy") and 2.) again, this is the movie that ended up costing $50 million more because of his tendency of either being late or not showing up.

THe way he just casually owns up to the piss thing is funny. The rest of the article makes him come off better than anything else has in ages. He comes off as weirdly out of touch still but there's some selfawareness.

That Santa shit movie would've worked if it was an R-rated gore fest. Like a real life Night The Reindeer Died.

1.) I kinda doubt a studio would finance that with a large budget, and 2.) probably would've sucked even then.

Not if Santa is more Verne Schillinger than Kris Kringle

Violent Night did the R rated Santa gorefest two years ago and people liked that one. I was annoyed by the comedy throughout though. Just not my thing, but David Harbour made for a great Santa.

Dwayne coming for the Oscar. For real, it looks like a nomination worthy performance based on the trailer. Makeup looks awesome and Rock definitely is acting for the first time since Pain And Gain. Great to see him stretch his skills finally.

We were long overdue for a Safdie film.

Between this and the Scorsese flick, Rock is putting in that damage control work.

Dude it looks like they copied The Smashing Machine, documentary, shot for shot in many cases.

Not that I'm complaining, I'm hyped.

The shot of him crying on the bed is literally a shot from the doc, although I don't know what the context of this movie is. But I felt like I was watching the real Kerr cry about his OD. That felt real as fuck, the Rock brought his acting chops for this one.

Obviously he sounds like the Rock, but the WAY he speaks, I don't know the proper terminology and if Edwin and Byron were here they could write it for me, but the softness, intonation, his vocal delivery pattern when angry with his girlfriend vs when he's interacting with the public, they all sound just like the real guy. I'm pretty impressed.

But I can't get over how close it is to the documentary. The opening scene from the doc is the conversation he has with the old lady at the doctor's office. Pretty much word for word, reaction for reaction. But at least that's how you know this movie will be AUTHENTIC.

In. Been waiting. Dude is gonna give me a reason to like him.

It's a smart choice. Smashing Machine is one of the best sports documentaries I ever seen and Rock looks to really capture Kerr's demeanor and persistence in the clips of his performance so far.

Poor guy, looking all normal and shit.

I hope I'm wrong, but it reminds me of Chadwick Boseman's sudden weight loss before the worst happened. Hopefully, it's just Dwayne's intense dedication and him being a workaholic that led to him dropping weight so fast. He did go from looking like Goro to Earthworm Jim though.

Smashing Machine is getting great reviews and Dwayne is supposedly incredible in it. Will probably be the first wrestler to get an Academy Award nomination. Emily Blunt and surprisingly Ryan Bader are also getting rave reviews. I read a couple of reviews that say Bader really nails Coleman's demeanor. Would be wild if Bader got hyped enough to get a Supporting Actor nom, but I doubt it.
