Some of the more rural communities around here have gas stations with grills and fryers in back with 6-8 tables. I've seen old couples on "dates" having some corn dogs, fried chicken, french fries, and hamburgers. This one place in particular has meat pies that are worth the 25 mile drive it takes me.

There's a "Krispy Krunchy Chicken" near our local hospital that once had meat pies in the warmer. Pretty good, probably same distributor and 20 miles closer to my house but now they're always out of meat pies.

Also when mentioning mom & pop convenience store food (and calling back to the earlier discussion of fried chicken), I can't forget to mention Chester Fried Chicken. It's probably on level of KFC or Taco Bell. But when you're a little bit buzzed and you walk into some dank gas station in rural Maine at 10 P.M. on a Tuesday and there's Chester Fried Chicken, it is a delight.

There's a CFC outside of Niagara now? I only knew of two ever - one in Fort Erie from when I moved there in '94 unti it closed in '05, and one which opened in Niagara-on-the-Lake in '11.

I've seen them at gas stations all over Maine and New Hampshire. I saw one in PA once too. Almost always they're in gas stations in rural areas.

Oh yeah, plenty of gas stations have had McDonalds, Burger Kings or whatever inside them for years. There's also those trucker stops that sometimes have actual restaurants inside. If I grab any food at those places, it's usually those taquitos similar to the ones you see at 7/11s.

There's one gas station here that has a Godfather's Pizza AND a Quizno's inside of it. There's also one that has a Dairy Queen AND a Subway in it. I guess real estate is expensive in this town.

Yeah, we've got those up here too. Fifth Wheel, for example.

The gas station food counters are way more common in the US. They seem to be all over the place down there. There is a Kangaroo in Ocala with a Hardees in it.

Are you speaking in general terms or do you have a specific location in mind

Lots of rural gas stations around here have little BBQ pits next door.

There's a convenience store in my neighborhood that has a BBQ truck set up shop in its parking lot every Saturday but I've yet to try it. Smells good whenever I pass it, though.

One of my old friends who is stationed in South Korea also posted a picture of this big sumbitch.

No wonder why Korea's gaining ground on us!

Wonder how many of these that Kim Jong Un's had smuggled up North.

Finally got to try PDQ tonight, and I actually thought it was very good. Had chicken tenders with creamy garlic sauce, fries, and cherry Mello Yello. I was very surprised about the fries, because American fries (especially fast food fries) tend to really suck in comparison to Canadian fries, but I really liked these.

A PDQ opened near my office earlier this year but I haven't gone. It's popular with my co-workers, though.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/mcdonalds-says-debut-slimmed-down-172226217.html

Dec 10 (Reuters) - McDonald's Corp said on Wednesday it plans to cut the number of items on its U.S. menus and use fewer ingredients in food as it moves to speed up service, bolster sales and offer consumers personalized options to compete better with Subway and Chipotle Mexican Grill.

Mike Andres, the company's U.S. president, said starting in January menus will have eight fewer food items and five fewer Extra Value Meals.

The world's biggest fast-food chain, which has not had a monthly gain in sales at established U.S. restaurants since October 2013, is also making the changes to reach out to consumers who are demanding simpler, more natural food choices.

The company is testing its slimmed-down menus in six markets, including Bakersfield, California, and Knoxville, Tennessee, a spokeswoman said.

The simplified menu boards will offer one Quarter Pounder with Cheese hamburger as compared with four on the regular menu, one Premium Chicken sandwich versus three, and one Snack Wrap versus three.

Andres said McDonald's is not finished tweaking menus.

"There's more to come," Andres said on a conference call with investors. "We don't need to have a big menu board to offer variety."

The menu changes come as McDonald's plans to roll out its new "Create Your Taste" sandwich program to 2,000 of its 14,000-plus U.S. restaurants by the end of 2015.

McDonald's is hoping that giving customers a choice of sandwich toppings will enable it to better compete with Subway and Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc, popular restaurants that allow diners to build their meals ingredient-by-ingredient.

McDonald's abandoned a prior customization drive several years ago. Chief Executive Officer Don Thompson recently told Reuters that technology that allows customers to order from mobile phones and in-restaurant kiosks makes success more likely this time around.

In addition, the company with the "golden arches" has been working to win back mothers and young diners, who increasingly want food that is fresh and minimally processed. In October, it launched a U.S. online campaign called "Our food. Your questions." aimed at addressing negative perceptions about its food quality.

Andres said McDonald's ingredient labels need to be shorter and noted that simplifying ingredients is an enormous task, "but we have to get started," offering a glimpse into how the company is rethinking its recipes.

Busy McDonald's operators don't keep food in storage for very long, Andres said. "Why do we have to have preservatives in our food? We probably don't."

Shares of McDonald's were down 1.3 percent at $90.14 in afternoon trading.

Anyone ever eat at BurgerFi? And if so how is it? Apparently one just opened here because they advertise it on the radio during every break, and it sounds delicious.

They recently came to Jacksonville. Haven't been there, but they seem to offer a menu similar to M Shack, which is a delicious local chain. And I Eat Local™.

Not FAST FOOD per se but Applebees has this new burger menu. Each one comes with "endless fries" out of sweet potato, standard, or dusted with BBQ chip powder. I got the one with pineapple cooked into it. It tasted really good but tore me up something fierce.

And the fries, while bottomless, take forever for the next round to come out. I recommend passing on them.

Guess their bottomless fries is trying to be like Red Robin, who expanded their bottomless side option to include new sweet potato fries or everyone's favorite, broccoli.
