Caught a pretty interesting horror/western over the weekend, a very limited release film from Paramount called Organ Trail. It's what you think it might be....a kinda riff on Oregon Trail, set in the late 1800s. A group of bandits are terrorizing camps of families along the Oregon Trail, chaos ensues with a decent amount of blood/violence. Well worth tracking down in time.....I think it hits VOD next month. Not huge stars in this but Sam Trammell (played the bar owner on True Blood) was in it.

Given its a Paramount release I wouldn't be shocked if it hits Paramount Plus soon too.

Becky: Revisted this from covid era, I actually ended up watching this in a drive-in theater in Iowa way back in that early summer of 2020, if I recall. Film holds up well, and the performances were standout with Kevin James really leaning into his antagonist role. Bit surprised that they got Joel McCale in such a bit role though, and wow at the role of the former Kurrgan in this.

Wrath of Becky: This just came out in a pretty low release a few weeks ago, and it was so drastically different than the first Becky in that it was now more meta towards the franchise and heavily self-referential and comedic in tone. Lulu Wilson (Becky from the original) really killed it in the sequel even more than the first one. In fact, I think the sequel was eons so much better than the first one, and far more engaging. Similarily to the first one where she battles Nazis, in this one the antagonists are a group of Proud Boys-like incels, led by Sean William Scott. The digs on the incels were great, and even better was the kills on them.

The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster: This was SO FUCKIN WOW! A great take on Frankenstein and in such a unique manner that really deserves tons of praise for the way this was done. It portrayed some strong themes in culture/social commentary and more in depth, the concept of life and death really well. I missed catching this at a film festival a few months ago and finally arrived in theaters again this past weekend. The themes presented were just as strong as the scares and gore itself. Just a fantastic out of the box horror that deserves tons of praise for the execution of this.

I re-watched 2002's The Ring and it still holds up pretty well. Naomi Watts is a great lead, that kid is still (super) weird, and the wham line/end scene is still a fucking classic scene that should be up there with the most iconic horror scenes in the genre.

Since I didn't want to add more to the post above, quick thoughts on these

-Messiah of Evil is one I'm a huge fan of-I've had it as an avatar and sig pic more than once. Just a haunting, eerie little film that could best be described as "Night of the Living Dead" meets HP Lovecraft made by people inspired by European art films.

-City of the Living Dead is my favorite of Lucio Fulci's splatter movies and my favorite of his "Gates of Hell" trilogy. It's super gory, but the atmosphere of it is what wins me over. Also, there's a scene with a woman buried alive that's probably his best setpiece.

-Tombs of the Blind Dead is another one I love. On the minus side, Jingus liked it too, but I wouldn't let that deter you.

-I can't understand why anyone would want to watch August Underground, and I don't think I'd want to know that person.

-I'm wary of "Toxic Avenger" on UHD simply because Troma has a reputation for being awful at restoration.

Is City Of The Living Dead the movie where the girl in the car with her bf ends up puking up her guts and rumors were that the guts she vomited up were either goats or lamb intestines for real?

Random thoughts...
Love that Ghoulies is getting some love. I think Sleepy Hollow is one of Tim Burton's most atmospheric movies but such a subpar film overall unfortunately. I still have somehow managed to avoid World War Z... and I like Brad Pitt but the movie never has grabbed me in an "I should watch this" manner even when it's being shown on SyFy or AMC.

"Sleepy Hollow" has it's flaws (not a big fan of Depp in it), but I'm largely a fan-it and "Sweeney Todd" are the last movies of his enjoy. I barely remember anything about "World War Z", and I honestly prefer "Ghoulies II" to the original since it does more with the concept at hand.

So got to checking out the last (or is it?) installment of Insidious over the weekend. Did a chronological binge of the previous films too, particuarly since the word was that part 5 is actually more a direct sequel to part 2 more than anything. The previous two entries ended up being both prequels too so I went 3, 4, 1, and then 2 for the order.

Anyhow, after seeing the new one, I felt very underwhelmed. The film felt more dramatic and slow building than any of the others for sure.
The first hour was far too much dramatic introspection particularly with father/son themes....it got repetitive and kinda jarring how heavy handed they were going with it. It was nice to see them draw deeply into the events of the first and second film in why things are disconnected with those two characters, but they just went too long in the tooth with it. Plus just getting to where things "opened up" with tension and terror, jump scares, etc, was a chore to get to that point.

While it was a satisfying conclusion (generally, but I still have issues with it) to the Lambert family trilogy, it felt like we got little to no real finality on the demons parasites ghosts etc who inhabit this world and why and how of it all. I was hoping for more of a robust explanation/extended mythology on all that, now five films in. They also didn't touch upon the ending of the third film at all which has a super young Jenna Ortega in a blink and you will miss it moment.

My guess is judging by the after the credits scene, this franchise isn't done but the Lambert story is. I wouldnt be shocked if we do see a next installment directly follow the end of Insidious 3. But time will tell. Adding Jenna Ortega into the frey some more in a future installment isn't the worst idea in the world either.

Not a horror aficionado, anyone recognise the movies in this music video?

Looks like it's three movies, and one of them for sure is Italian. Paging @Gary , did Fulci or Argento do a Frankenstein flick? I think I recognize Catriona MacColl, but it doesn't look like House by the Cemetery from my memory.

They did not, but I think Argento had interest in making one in the 80s.

Dug around way down in the comments of the video and some people identified:

"Panic" (1982)
"Messiah of Evil" (1973)
"Count Yorga, Vampire" (1970) (Possibly)
"The Night Evelyn came out of the Grave"
"Orgy of the Dead"
"Grave of the Vampire"
"Frankenstein '80"

The music video is pretty kind to some of these movies, especially Frankenstein '80. Impressed with the difference in visual quality between the movies and the clips though.

For the most part, I got them years and years ago, lol so that has helped but I remember literally spending $200-$300 around Christmas time some of those years when sales were $9.99-$13.99. Most of the 4Ks I've picked up have been recent movies released this year/last year (I usually opt for the BD/4K combo when possible).

It feels like there’s a sale for 4K movies every day. I’m trying to be more selective now

Yeah, most re-releases of titles on 4K I probably won't pick up. I'll still opt for Blu-Rays instead (I use blu-ray.com or dvdpricesearch.com to compare movies and their sales prices) but stuff like Black Phone at $8.99 or Doctor Sleep at $7.87 will catch my eye faster because I try to go as cheap as possible. The Keepa Amazon Price Tracker extension in Firefox shows DS at its cheapest since a random 11/21 sale at $5.99 as an example.

The titles I do grab on 4K are the ones that I know will pop/benefit from it e.g. the Spider-Man: Spider-Verse type movies or are titles of movies I've watched a million times like Jurassic Park or The Fifth Element or Speed.

Most of the Blu titles I get are from boutique labels (many of them mentioned in this very thread!), and more than half the time I either get it from the label's website or Diabolique DVD. It's more expensive than what you get from Walmart and other places, but they tend to have better restorations and more in the way of special features.

Cobweb: This was maybe the biggest unexpected gem of the year in horror so far to me....a really subversively deep and dark film that has tones similar to a Babadook a bit. The acting was very strong too by not just the main child character but by the parents, Lizzy Caplan and Antony Starr (star of Banshee, which I used to love). Heavy focus on family and child trauma, and in fact this was so effective that I found myself uncomfortable and unsettled by the narrative in that aspect. The third act is an unraveling rollercoaster for sure. Interesting side item but one of the producers of this effective horror was Seth Rogan.

Also caught the first Terrifier in the theater for the first time on a re-release over the weekend. I still hold to my opinion that the first Terrifier is sooo sooo SOOOO much better than the second one.

Not looking forward to this trilogy....its going to have the same frentic music video level pace that the last few Halloween films had likely. No thanks!

I like the homages to the black and white 70s trailer of the original with the flashing images. Looks extremely generic besides that. I wish David Gordon Green would do more films like his earlier work and less horror.

Hell, just have him do an original horror movie.

Just saw Talk To Me. Really good little horror movie from A24 with a great lead performance from Sophie Wilde. Worth checking out. Some solid scares, great make-up design, and a decent enough plot with some emotional heart to it.

7.5/10
