Infinity Pool was the first time I actually thought "man, this chick pulls off the crazy vibe real well".

I think she’s entirely unattractive. Infinity Pool is good though
Oh, I understand. It took me like up until Infinity Pool to even think of her as slightly attractive though. But, there's this new wave of "ugly hot" with Pete Davidson, Adam Driver, Benedict Cumberbatch, Joaquin Phoenix, Jesse Plemons (LOL, he really was listed in an article I read), and Goth would be the female equivalent of that for me.

I love Gosling, but Christopher Abbott is a much better fit for The Wolfman. He can do pathos and sadness incredibly well, and this could end up really good. Abbott is just waiting for that breakout role. He's fantastic in James White, It Comes At Night, Possessor, Black Bear, Sweet Virginia, Sanctuary, and Piercing. Especially James White, one of the most underrated movies of the 2010's.

Whannell is 2 for 2 with his directorial features. Upgrade and The Invisible Man are both very good. We really need a good to great Werewolf movie again. I love this news, between this and The Rock actually doing something interesting and trying to act again, it's been a great movie news day.

Thanksgiving is finally a modern slasher that really clicked with me. Instead of having the usual snarky modern characters, this one is kind of weirdly earnest and played straight which helps it. It still has humor, but I actually found most of it funny and it's not in your face like it usually is in Roth's movies. Kills were obviously the highlight of the film. The cast mostly wasn't annoying and I actually liked them more than the cast of the new Scream movies. While, it didn't have the late 70's/early 80's visual style like the Grindhouse trailer had, it still felt like an early 80's slasher in tone and mean spiritedness. Ending did feel a little flat, but this feels like it could be a franchise so let's see where it goes.

Worth the hype and the most fun I've had watching a horror film this year. Not the best and doesn't top Where Evil Lurks, Talk To Me, and Infinity Pool for me, but it's the most enjoyable horror film this year. Eli Roth's best film as well.

7.5/10

Just cancel the movie already. Two directors have already excited the project, no leads, and they are scrambling to get Neve and McDreamy (Yes, I forgot Patrick Dempsey was in Scream 3) back in the franchise. Sidney got a fine ending in Scream 5 and the rest of the characters got decent endings in 6. End it. Scream needs to go away for a while anyway imo.

6 is literally worse than most of the bargain bin straight-to-streaming shitfests we put on when we don't want to watch anything that requires active thought. It had an interesting start and then dove right into shyte without any rhyme or reason.

7 being this big of a clusterfuck is oddly satisfying after the last two pieces of shit. The entire series ending on 4 would've been fine.

I think 4 is my second favorite of the series. I really liked the characters for the most part. Douche nerd guy with the video camera headset was annoying though. Kirby was cool and I understand why she was a fan favorite. I also liked Marley Shelton and was glad they brought her back for 5. The opening is hit or miss with people, but I find it amusing. It's also paced a lot better than Scream 2 and moves.

Scream 2 has some scenes that I find pointless or terrible (Jerry O'Connell singing, the discussion about Sequels in the classroom with Jamie Kennedy cycling through 3 impressions, All the Agamemnon stuff, etc) but nothing really bothers me that much in 4. I also thought Tim Olyphant didn't really find his instrument as an actor yet and was kind of blah.

There are a couple horror movies coming in January/February that could be decent or be typical shoddy horror fare... Night Swim and Imaginary (clearly influenced by M3GAN)

Birth/Rebirth is a very good movie that is currently on Shudder. Basically a female version of Re-Animator except all the comedy is removed. This is a two hander with Marin Ireland and Judy Reyes both giving great performances. Ireland, in particular, really dives into this eccentric character and is fascinating to watch. I've only seen Reyes on Scrubs, but she is great at drama and provides a lot of heart through most of the movie.

It is a tad too plodding at times and the third act dipped a bit. Still, this is an underrated 2023 horror film.

Prior is a great choice. It took me a couple of viewings to appreciate The Empty Man, but that movie did have a really nice sense of dread and an uneasy feeling. Which is perfect for an Exorcist movie.

Another under the radar choice is Damian McCarthy who directed Caveat from 2021. That movie is incredibly under seen and not talked about as much. It's legit one of the only horror movies this from this decade so far to unsettle and scare me.

I can't see them getting any of the big guns to do it like James Wan, Ari Aster, Mike Flanagan, Robert Eggers, Ti West etc, but a David Prior level director would be ideal. Jennifer Kent would be another one that would be an amazing choice, if she wants to return to horror. I assume they get some weaker inexperienced director to do it.

Apparently, these are for an upcoming movie called "Longlegs", which stars Maika Monroe and Nic Cage as a serial killer. Oz Perkins ("The Blackcoats Daughter", "I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House" and "Gretel and Hansel") is directing, and no matter how the movie turns out...these are creepy teasers.

Horror adjacent I guess, but Paramount announced we're getting a 4K edition of "The Crow" this year. In news @Laz might like, Unearthed Films announced their first UHD disc will be for "The Guyver"
While I probably won't pick it up (because early 90s cheese looks better with film grain and I can't imagine there being any great special features), I'm so fucking glad that the Guyver is gaining more cult status. I love that movie.

So checked out Out of Darkness over the weekend. Kind felt like there was swervy swerves going on here as 2/3 of the film gives you the impression this is a monster movie of some sort only to find out
it's more about a crazy clan of cavemen who are trying to kill others of their kind

It was a solid film, however, as the tension and and suspense was very well done. There was certainly something missing though here, maybe more of a thorough explanation of the antagonist's perspective or something.

Mildly suggested to check out, especially for off-the-grain aspects. Didn't feel like a cookie cutter horror at all.

Lisa Frankenstein is getting good audience response but was bashed by critics. This means more to me when it comes to horror, but still not sure I'd spend money to go see it.
