I'm intrigued at LHB line drive BABIP being up so much. I feel like a lot of those "hits" were usually robbed by the 2B being positioned in the outfield.

"Lefty line drive BABIP is up by a lot. A LOT. In last year’s first week, lefty liners led to a .607 BABIP, because line drives are extremely valuable hits. In this year’s first week, lefty liners have led to a .656 BABIP, which is a pretty massive increase. It would be the highest full-season number since 2013, which is basically right before the shift took hold across the Majors."

Can somebody please explain to me what the hell is going on in Tampa Bay? Is this a fluke or were people in the know expecting them to be this good out of the gate?

It still is impressive to win 9 games in a row by 4+ runs, regardless of how marginal the competition is. I read somewhere that it hasn’t been done since the 1880s.

Red Sox managed to hold them to one run last night. I hope they break their streak in that stupid ass geezer dome! (But Idk if MLB fans outside of New England would be shocked if the Rays went 13-0)

The 1884 St. Louis Maroons of the Union Association did it. And if you think the Rays had a weak schedule, the Maroons played eight of their first nine games against Altoona Mountain City. Altoona started the season 0-11 and folded by June.

Luis Arraez became the first Marlins player to hit for the cycle in the franchise’s 30 year history. They were the last current MLB franchise to never have a player hit for the cycle.

Just saw on the baseball subreddit that the San Diego Padres didn’t have a player hit for the cycle until 2015. So I guess the Marlins could’ve done worse.

Also amazed Tony Gwynn never hit for the cycle.

Knowing Tony, I'm guessing he had single-double-triple multiple times but saw a better pitch to keep getting hits on instead of the big fly!

You try and warn baseball teams about the dangers of selling cheap meat but they never, ever listen.

Rays took an 8-3 lead on the Red Sox in the fifth. If they hold on they're the third team in MLB history to start 13-0. Potential record breaker tomorrow against the Blue Jays.

Boston's been doing a lot of late, hard-charging comebacks this season. Makes for great games (if they win) but not great when they're behind early!

After the Rays series, I was getting 2012 vibes but I think/hope that (and the Pirates) series were aberrations. If could get at least average pitching then they might be able to compete for the last Wild Card. It doesn’t have to be good. Their offense is potent enough that it just has to be not dog crap.
That’s a huge if considering their 1 and 2 rn are old ass Corey Kluber and Chris Sale, who is more cooked than a $3 steak.

I’ll hold to my preseason prediction of their win total being in the high 70s/low 80s.

He had a horrific start to the season, but Cody Bellinger just got the first 5 hit game of his career and he's batting .310. Still early obviously, but he's looked good for a streak of games now.

The Oakland A's are 3-13, they have allowed 125 runs in their first 16 games. That's ninth worst in modern history, worst in this century and worst since the '98 Rockies allowed 126 runs in their first 16.

During spring training, I doubt anyone who worked for the team would even predict they'd make the post season but I saw a few people predict that Oakland would win 70 to 75 games this season cause "they couldn't be as bad as they look on paper." Turns out, yeah, yeah they could.

The current A's starting rotation came into the season with 24 career wins. Thirteen of those were James Kaprielian. When you're counting on five pitchers to all step forward that seems like a recipe for disaster. Not that the A's are really making any attempt. Ditto the Coliseum. They want a new stadium. What's their motivation to clear out the opossums? Basic maintenance only prolongs their efforts.
